DJU ran through progressions

One positive thing I noticed in Furman game was that DJU was actually checking through his progressions on a number of set pass plays. My recollection of DJU was that he was often fixated on the guy he was going to throw to, telegraphing throws to the defense while often overlooking 2nd and 3rd options that were wide open.
Seeing his head turn two or three times before making a throw was a nice change.
Now if we could get him to stop throwing the ball at the receiver's feet on screen passes...

I saw the same thing re: progressions.
I also haven't noticed near as many balls thrown in the dirt so far. There was one I recall vs. Tech. I don't remember any from the Furman game but I had to miss most of the second half.
This is the first comment I've ever made about DJU (I think), but to me he is clearly playing much better so far this year.

He threw one that Spector managed to scoop up at his ankles, but by that point the play was busted. Don't think he actually threw one in the dirt, so that is a small improvement.
But it's a screen pass. One that you *know* you're throwing and who you're throwing it to. You know how far away he is. You know you'll be throwing it before any defense is likely to be on you. And yet DJU has a tendency to throw them so low as to usually be uncatchable. I can't fathom that.

A lot of quarterbacks tend to throw low screen passes. It's because often they are backpedaling when they throw it. I can't really get on DJ too much about that. It happens sometimes.

If I recall the one in the tech game was his way of throwing the ball away. The receiver was covered and he didn’t want to get sacked.

I think DJU looks the best when he drops back, either pure pass or play action, and stands tall in the pocket.
If the play breaks down he can use his legs to avoid pressure. But, I think he is most effective when there is no option available to him. Just get in the pocket and start your progressions.

Agree 100%. Do not ask him to manage RPO. Just called runs, and called passes dressed up with play action.

Easier when the team you are playing is not great and you are not running for your life. Get back with us after Wake and State when we start playing big boy football.

No doubt, but I don't remember him doing it at all last year even in the podunk games.

I saw it. I look for it every time he drops back, started looking for it last year.
That’s improvement. Keep it going.

Fair enough, but I don’t recall him playing this well against poor competition

I read that DJ had a passer rating of 166 and the team with him at QB scored 35 points in 25 minutes of possession. If the D could have gotten off the field, we might have scored 50.

DJU could be the best QB that we have

I hope he stays healthy and continues to improve, hopefully we get our backups some time to so we don’t slip up & lose a game.
