Thursdy mawn tiger football ramblins

Dec 30, 2021, 8:08 AM

2 back set, I likey.

Screet did a good job of trying to get DJ in situations where he could succeed.

On downfield throws, DJ cain't seem to pick a read and let it fly. 2nd guesses, pumps, then chaos ensues. I will say his improv was good a couple of times. WR drops continue to not help him. He actually played fairly well last night I thought.

D under Wes looked gooooood.

Our collection of DUDES on defense is an embarassment of riches.

STs were good. Potter gone be a real asset next year. Spiers finished 1 short of Pinion's school record for punts downed inside the 20. Boy's a good punter, bengaline

Appreciated the committment to run the ball and to attack the flats vs a 3 man front.

Good win and all, but ISU now 7-6. And they were 7-5 before Walter Payton opted out, apparently.

That MF that was givin Boof tha bidness needs his axe whupped.

We may finish 15. Should move up a few spots from 20 annywho. Reading these boards you'd think we finished 8-5.

Go Heels!

10 wins. 11 scrait years. THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A SECOND.

The end, go tigers.

Agree on all counts. Pleasantly surprised with QB play

and play calling on both sides. I hope this trasnlates to next year as far as the effectiveness of the new staff. Hard to tell how much of that was holdover from BV especially.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also, Will F'n Swinney

Dec 30, 2021, 8:31 AM

did very well when called upon.

It's a sign of the state of our WR corp...

when you see Swinney and Will Brown playing/starting at WR. Can't understate how banged up we were at that position all year.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that was the main reason for the 2 RB setup, I'm sure

Dec 30, 2021, 10:54 AM

Pace or Swinney in the game? Not a difficult call there.

so long as we can keep bringing in such high level players then I don't fear a GIANT defensive decline.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you think Spiers will make an NFL team?

Dec 30, 2021, 8:22 AM

He is way too inconsistent….and the punts downed inside the 20 is b/c our offense gets stopped at midfield a lot so Spiers can kick his typical 30-35 yarder ??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hard for me to opine on a punter's pro future.

Dec 30, 2021, 8:37 AM

I'll just say Willy Spiers is a good punter. A good CFB punter. A very good punter for Clemson, and I'd say he's prolly in the top 10 CU punters of all time. Heck maybe top 5. Has been nominated for national awards, etc. Without looking it up he probably is among the top of many statistical categories for punting at CU.

He ain't Reggie Roby but he's indeed been a fine punter.

Dec 30, 2021, 8:59 AM

by coaches may well be very different than some of the others. We seem to favor a non-returnable kick above all others and often times that has him delay, roll to one side, then pooch one down there where the coverage is.

This past year was his worst statistically, sure. It's not like he was some liability though.

Body of work for 5 years was very good.

Re: Thursdy mawn tiger football ramblins

Dec 30, 2021, 8:36 AM

Just joking a bit here btw, but man the offense was so frustrating to watch last night. I'm really hoping the major culprit is DJ (this is what I suspect), hoping for a big improvement next year and Klubnik is ready to go because another season like this is going to absolutely painful to watch

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

3 thangs:

Dec 30, 2021, 8:39 AM

Having a center suddenly out es no bueno. The OL seemed to do well in spite of that.

WRs are a problem. They hurt, they drop, they transfer.

DJ is limited. Therefore the game plan was limited. Gotta do what you gotta do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure if it's DJ or playcalling but

Dec 30, 2021, 8:46 AM

it seems like we rarely utilize the center of the field...never really see drag routes, TE seams, routes that drop behind LBs on Cover two defenses, etc - 90% of the passes seem to be WR quick outs or dumps to the RB

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed.

Dec 30, 2021, 8:47 AM

I think that's all DJ, and what he can't seem to do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

frustrating because lack of TDs but we had a couple 7-8 min

Dec 30, 2021, 10:14 AM [ in reply to Re: Thursdy mawn tiger football ramblins ]

drives. That is successful offense by any definition, when you eat half a quarter off the clock.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, but if I'm ####### for a full 7-8 minutes and don't

Dec 30, 2021, 11:13 AM

finish, what's the point. Sure I just set an all time record, but without the grunt at the end, why even bother?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

well, you keep the defense off the field for one

Dec 30, 2021, 11:19 AM

that tends to pay off at the end of game, especially when you are down several key starters.

Ask any coach how important that is.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DJ showed more pocket presence last night than we've seen

Dec 30, 2021, 8:46 AM

all season. I'm not saying he was all of a sudden a magical quarterback wizard capable of winning the Super Bowl, but the improvement last night in awareness was noticeable. That said, there's more to the situation than Streeter simply being committed to attacking a 3 man front and taking what the ISU D was giving...the staff didn't trust DJ, or the receivers, or BOTH to stretch the field last night. Not even once to keep the D honest. That sticks out to me. I'm wondering if there's more than just a splint on the index finger going on with DJ's hand, or some other health issue that prevents him from throwing anything resembling a long ball. I guess we'll see where we are in the spring.

One other thing that I hope gets addressed...Shipley's hands. He's got to improve there. He dropped a beautiful improv pass by DJ last night, and that's not the first time he's had concentration drops this year. That can be overcome, but he needs work.

Re: DJ showed more pocket presence last night than we've seen

Dec 30, 2021, 9:01 AM

His drop to go up 14-0 at Pitt was a game changer.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here's what to watch in the spring game: Body language.

Dec 30, 2021, 10:17 AM [ in reply to DJ showed more pocket presence last night than we've seen ]

Remember KB's body language vs. TLaw's in their one spring game together? KB was all frustrated, even had a coach come in to help him on the field, while TLaw was holding the tops of his shoulder pads, head back, laughing and smiling. THAT told you all you needed to know.

Now go back and look at DJU's body language all season. The biggest tell was when he looked RELIEVED to have TP go in for him when he was semi-benched (can't remember the game). Competitors want to compete.

The young man has had a lot on him personally, and subpar OL and WRs did not help on the field, but his body language spoke volumes.

Watch that in the spring game.

Also, I pray we get a backup QB out of the portal. Doesn't have to be starter material, just insurance because few QBs are ready to go as true freshmen.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Getting a back up QB from the portal is a nice thought

Dec 30, 2021, 11:13 AM [ in reply to Here's what to watch in the spring game: Body language. ]

but I'm not sure we would get much better than what we currently have. The plug and play guys get scooped up quickly. The remaining guys may not be a fit for the scheme to begin with, and if they are it will probably take a year to learn the system...and that's most likely not why they went in the portal to begin with. Unless you're in desperate need of a QB, the portal isn't going to be the answer that most fans seem to think it is. I think the days of just about any team having 3 deep Power Five level starters on the roster are long gone for any team not named Alabama. The real key in this new world of college football is being able to identify those diamonds in the rough and then develop them because any kid that had any recruiting hype surrounding them coming out of high school probably isn't going to have much patience.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That’s the very definition of a low bar.***

Re: Thursdy mawn tiger football ramblins

Dec 30, 2021, 9:04 AM

Agreed on the 2 back sets. The RB room is in a good spot, especially after another offseason of development.

I also didn't mind the playcalling. Nobody trusts DJ, including the coaches, and he had already given ISU life with the turnover. I don't mind the conservative calls. IMO its better to play that way and lean on the defense that to ask DJ to do something he has proven incapable of doing (as TE did sometimes in the season).

The lack of trust in DJ to throw for 7-8 yards on third down makes me think there may be a real QB competition over the summer. I wonder how much of the kid gloves treatment is due to the rumored family trouble surrounding DJ. I could see Dabo letting that impact how he handled QB snaps, especially given Dabo's own family history. I'm not even saying that is wrong, necessarily.

The defense was so good, once again.

Disagree on Spiers. A sixth year senior needs to be more consistent.

10 wins. Wins over USC and FSU. I'll take it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I will say - one of the best parts about the game last night

Dec 30, 2021, 9:57 AM

was not having to stress the F out like I do during CFB playoff games and got to sit back and enjoy the absurdity of all the Cheeze It related things about the game.

Loser talk I know...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like the two back set as well.

Dec 30, 2021, 10:46 AM

In fact I liked it so much that I wish they hadn’t mothballed it after it worked so well in the first series.

And DJ? I hope the experiment is over.

It’s not just throws. The football IQ is absent.

I’m convinced he cannot look at an opposing defense lined up and have a clue what’s coming, much less how to react. It seems like every play is Groundhog Day for him. He looks at defensive sets that a HS QB would check out of at the line and just continues with the original call.

This same lack of IQ Is why he seems to make the make the wrong read every.single.time on our zone read plays. I’m ready to thank him for his efforts and move forward.

Dec 30, 2021, 11:17 AM [ in reply to I like the two back set as well. ]

You'da thought that Inside Don was this boy's father with the way he was spinning what was happening. He actually praised him for taking a sack on the last offensive play. After one horrible screen pass miss he said "clearly he's not feeling well, he has a knee and finger injury". I'm like #### you Inside Don, he's 100% because he's making the exact same throws he made before he got hurt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The sack on the last play was actually the right thing to do

Dec 30, 2021, 11:19 AM

with nobody open. Had to keep that clock moving.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He couldn't run around or scramble?

Dec 30, 2021, 11:29 AM

Oh wait...DJ...nevermind.

Inside Don didn't say anything about receivers being covered. Everyone on the call was saying they should run it. Then when they snapped it nothing was said til he got sacked.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I just meant take sack vs. throw it away. I don't think

Dec 30, 2021, 11:48 AM

there was a lot of scramble options on that play for a guy with DJ's...uh...speed. He's no Willie Beamon.

It wasn't a great performance for sure, but it was probably DJ's best game of the year. Still way way way below expectations coming into the year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can't say I attributed that to mental capacity.

Dec 30, 2021, 12:47 PM [ in reply to The sack on the last play was actually the right thing to do ]

But it was one of the best OB plays of the game.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Harp on!

Dec 30, 2021, 12:43 PM [ in reply to I like the two back set as well. ]

That young man has a mental issue and I do not believe it is related to his IQ. He seems to be a man with clear understanding and much wisdom for his age though a series of select responses might fool an old fool like me.

He is clueless, as you say. He has no idea where any of his receivers are after the ball is snapped other than his primary and I fear if he looks anyone off he might not remember where is primary is suppose to be. Thanks to The LORD that he can usually find his check down man and hit a stationary target.

I always hated when a parent told his kid to 'Just throw strikes.' Without knowing or even understanding the mechanics of locating a baseball they demanded a youte would do just that.

After teaching the players mechanics I would entrust them with focus. The only exercise to increase this was for them to focus on the mechanics. I declare, it is much simpler to teach, correctly teach a pitcher to pitch or a batter to swing than teach a QB how to focus on the playbook when under center.

If anyone knows the secret enlighten me. Elsewise, I will continue to believe this type focus is all left to the one playing quarterback and nothing a coach or anyone else can do to make it happen.

God bless, DJ #5. I hope he gets a good education from Clemson for I do not see him overcoming his mental disability concerning quarterbacking a football team.
