DJ and the offense

Aug 24, 2022, 4:21 PM

First, I’m not a big DJ guy. Honestly, although I was hoping for good things, I was telling friends to pump the brakes on all the heisman talk before last year as I wanted a little more video evidence without Etienne house calling dump offs from 50 yards out. However, this year I think we can run the table with this team (especially with this defense) even if DJ is pretty much the same guy and keeps the job all year….I think too little credit is given to a brand new WR group that was injured to death all year, brand new RB group coming off a generational talent, and an O line that started 3 centers. The odds are, with all of that being a year more experienced/healthier DJ’s stat line can be much improved even if he’s basically the same player. Excited to see his run game improvement too.

We will have a top ten offense and a top 3 defense on our way back to the playoffs & winning another National Championship Bro!

Put me done for a solid Natty this year!

Just hope this team offensively moves and executes like they absolutely know what they're doing and impose their will to win any game they play. We looked confused and out of sync in several games last season...and ebbs and flows of the game had little to do with it. Just wasn't our standard.

Defensively we all know what to expect but there have been some major shifts in staff and personnel. Venables has spoiled me and a lot of us. With that said Goodwin and a few other coaches on both sides of the ball are on the spot now.

Dabo is in charge but its going to be a little different and new Clemson to a lot of us when that ball is kicked off in Atlanta. The fun in the winning is the thing and experience that I hope stays familiar.

Football is a very simple game …….

MOVE THE CHAINS. Easy to say but not that easy to do. DJ will be given the chance to do just that. I for one don’t care who gets it done but we need to keep the punter out of the game!!!’ Go Fighting Tigers.

We have the battle tested athletes to get a Title done; I understand other teams are talented. But, none of them have talented and battle tested players like Clemson does.
The "learning by fire" last year that occurred because of all the injuries is going to serve the Tigers well this season.
Coach Richardson and Coach Austin being in place with healthy players is going to serve the Tigers well. Coach Streeter and Coach Goodwin being new coordinators and wanting to prove themselves will go over the top to prove "they belong"!
Plus, they both will have that chip on their shoulders with battle tested players who went through adversity and in some cases learned before they were ready to contribute.

We'll be fine as long as we stay healthy! I believe DJU will be a much improved player; because he is a good young person. Comes from a solid family. And he has Coach Richardson to explain some of the nuance of the passing game to him.

I think people have not made a big enough deal about Coach Richardson being in place. Unless he has forgotten how to coach the last 6 years = we are in for a really efficient passing game. Note: I know he did it as H.S. mostly(he does have college experience too though) but so did some of your best OC's out there! Malzahn came to college and started dominating. Chad Morris same thing. HUNH the way it's run with Chip Kelly had it's roots in H.S. The spread started in H.S. because teams had athletes at skill positions; but an average OL.
We are going to be one of the best teams in the Nation if we stay healthy no-doubt!

We have a championship defense, but I'm not sold...

on the offense, especially DJ.

Fortunately, we are getting close to observing results on the field instead of purely speculating.

Re: DJ and the offense

Aug 24, 2022, 6:25 PM

After watching the games again I am convinced that DJ would have been much better if opposing defenses weren’t running freely through the line. Also as good as the rbs were, they would have been better if the defense weren’t getting to them behind the line. The last games of the season they started coming around, but DJ was already shell shocked. Also our defence struggled late in games from staying on the field.
So if the line improves slightly from what they were at the end of last year then DJ should be improved. The rbs will be improved, and offensive ball control will take the load off defense. My concern is receiver’s, which I expect will be eased in the Georgia tech game.

As the OP says, DJ will be better this year for a few reasons. Plus there is an excellent back-up QB just in case. All that with a super defense and I’m all in for this year.

WR Group. . . . filco

Aug 24, 2022, 6:35 PM [ in reply to Re: DJ and the offense ]

We are going to be good at the WR position.
Our young Collins both were pressed into action during a time; you would rather they watch and take mental reps. Maybe get in the game in mop up duty. But, they learned under fire last year. They know what it takes now and have another year in a college SSC program.
The new additions are going to be beast if they stay healthy! EJ. Williams and Ngata. Collins and Collins. A. Williams and Randall. Nothing less than 4-star players there. Spector and Taylor. Both will be "Renfro-esq" in their contributions which will be enormous.

I feel very good about the WR group!

Also, spot on filco about the OL.

That can't be understated. Confidence is a huge part of being an elite player. MJ and Kobe and Bird and Magic all walked on the court with a confidence of "knowing they can do it because they are prepared and built for it"! In sports, if you lose your confidence, it affects you.
With an improved OL, DJU should have time to set his feet. Some of his inaccuracy goes back to his footwork. Much like a jump shooter in basketball; before Steph Curry, "if you make them move their feet and get out of rhythm" it usually made them miss.
I think DJU never got into a rhythm to where he felt comfortable enough to set his feet. I'm hoping this season with the scheme change; which gives more "uh oh" outlets he can get comfortable again. The Air Raid typically always has a crosser - if nothing else hit that a bunch.
The OL won't have to hold up for as long either in this offense; unless we are taking a deep shot downfield.
Between the scheme change and an improved OL - plus the weight loss for the run game. I think DJU is going to have a big year!

I Wish The Best For DJ

We need to fish or cut bait by week 4 and rest of offense must stay reasonably healthy

My prediction -- Saddle up and get ready for a stunner in Atlanta -- We will watch and say -- what just happened --- we steamrolled the Bee's -- not going to be close.
