Musical Mastery. I was cruising the Youtube this am, and

Nov 18, 2021, 10:26 AM

it struck me that there are some modern (Old by current kiddie standards of course) musicians who at some point in their careers truly achieved complete Mastery of their craft. You can check out most of these on Youtube, although some artists block them from time to time.

I warn you, I like a LOT of different genres of music, most everything except hip hop and rap, I don't consider those music. (Lots of gullible people have made a lot of people very rich in that genre, though!)

At random:

Kashmir (Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti) Pigeonholing the Zep as just heavy metal does not do them any sort of justice. By the time they got to Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin was just awash in genius. It is hard to even define what genre Kashmir belongs in, it is transcendent.

Hotel California: (Eagles, Hell Freezes Over version) The whole Hotel California album was great, from start to finish, not a completely weak song on it. But, to me, the rearrangement of the stringed intro by Don Felder on the Hell Freezes Over track raises the bar even further.

Ants Marching: (Dave Matthews Band, Live in Central Park version) This song is proof that the final mix can change a song completely. Matthews has put this song on several records, and frankly, prior to this live version, it was pedestrian at best. Here, is is a Tour de Force.

Bohemian Rhapsody: (Queen, A Night at the Opera). Freddie Mercury transforms radio. You couldn't have a hit song on the radio that lasted this insane amount of time. Until he did it.

Another Auld Lang Zyne: (Dan Fogelburg, The Innocent Age) Fogelberg was a fringe FM artist until he release this Opus double album, which spawned several radio hits. This song captures a real place and time, but any of us can identify with "The one who got away".

Hurt Video: (Johnny Cash, Cash) The Man in Black knew the end was near, when he recorded his take on this Nine Inch Nails song. If ever an artist took someone else's material and OWNED it forever after, this was it. The video raises the song so far above just what it originally was, you WILL be affected by it.

Call Me The Breeze: (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Second Helping) Another cover that far transcends the original. The fact that it is on what was only this group's 2nd album is a testament to just how long you may have to hone your craft before you hit it "Big". One of those songs that will make you feel the beat in your soul, no matter what age, race, or genre you are.

Prisoner In Disguise: (Linda Ronstadt, Prisoner In Disguise) You can call her Pop Princess, Queen of Covers, anything else you want. I just call her The Voice that I have been in love with ever since I first heard "Long, Long Time", and "Love Has No Pride" all those many years ago. By the time Linda made this album, she had complete control of her musical instrument, and the payoff was sheer musical perfection.

Running on Empty: (Jackson Browne, Running On Empty) The seminal album about life on the road as a musician. Still an incredible achievement today, who as an artist, or who as a record label takes a CHANCE on an artist recording a whole album of BRAND NEW SONGS, live for the first time? Jackson Browne had already released a watershed album previously, the masterful "Late for the Sky". But, "Running on Empty" was a whole different kind of genius.

One and Only: (Adele, Live at The Royal Albert Hall) Adele will never have the voice of some of the other music "Divas" such as Barbra Streisand or Celine Dion. But, she has something they will never have, and that is the ability to write her life in songs, and then tear your heart out listening to, and seeing that honesty pour out on stage. Some consider her a "Guilty Pleasure". I don't feel guilty at all.

I Don't Believe You: (Pink, Funhouse Live in Australia) I will be totally honest and say that I had barely heard of Pink before her epic 2009 Grammy live performance of "Glitter in the Air". After that, I quickly made up for lost time. She may not always hit the mark on record, but, like Adele, she has the ability to bring you into her life via her self portrait songs. Funhouse was the classic "breakup" album, but with a happy ending, in that she and her husband got back together as a result of filming one of the music videos for it.

Where does My Heart Beat Now: (Celine Dion, Live on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson) This one is a little different, as it shows how, even at a very young age, Celine Dion shows off a voice with unmatched power. If you can impress Johnny Carson, you have made it. Safe to say, she made an impression.

Promised Land: (Bruce Springsteen, Darkness on the Edge of Town) I have always been ambivalent about Springsteen, for the same reason that I can't stand Bob Dylan live. Sometimes, MOST times, neither of them makes any attempt to time their vocals to their music. But, on record, they do, and for me, Springsteen never got any better than on this LP, and Promised Land in particular. The line about "working all day, in my daddy's garage, spending all night chasing some mirage" could have been speaking about MY life at one time. And the dogs on main street howl, 'cause THEY understand...

Everybody Hurts: (The Corrs Live) People will surely castigate me for not picking the R.E.M. original, but this version is a lot more musical, and those instruments transform the song into something different.

Addicted to Love: (Robert Palmer) Oh, if he were still around today, any feminist would blow up his picture and stick it on targets to use for pistol practice, just because of those videos. But, his songs had a driving beat, and he was doing it totally tongue in cheek, I suspect. You could certainly say his videos were sexist, or you could say they were eye candy for anyone who appreciates the beauty of the moving female form. You'd be right either way.

You were always on my Mind: (Willie Nelson) Willie to me is another of those frustrating artists who doesn't seem to care if he mouths his lyrics live in any sort of time to the music. But, this song shows that if he puts forth a little effort, he actually can sound good on record.

Never Been Any Reason: (Heat East Live) Not a whole lot needs to be said about the quintessential rock anthem. Just sit back, crank your 1 to 10 volume control up to 12, and have your mind blown.

Higher Window: (Josh Groban, Walmart Soundcheck) Wow. You take a guy, whose voice ALONE is a finely tuned musical instrument, and put him in a sound room FULL of finely tuned musical instruments being played to perfection, and this is what you get.

That's just a partial list, some would say from the ridiculous to the sublime, feel free to add to it! I'm retired, and got all day to find your favorites on the Youtube as well!

I was listening to some Alison Krause and Robert Plant this morning. She has the voice of an angel. And for albums I always love Graceland. It is just so unique

Robert Palmer producers created a great dynamic in a lot of his songs with the heavy snare that really outshined the tone of the kick.

The heavier tone on the 2 & 4 instead of the downbeat gave addicted to love a very distinct feel.

Of course, the Palmer girls added a lot also. :)

Saw Jackson Browne this week. His voice hasn’t aged a bit, unlike some other aging singers…sounded great still, at 73.

I agree with most of these, especially Physical Graffiti, Led Zep made a huge pivot away from Delta blues over their career and Kashmir is a prime example of that genius.

Agree with Springsteen/Darkness; Born to run is obvious genius, but I think both the river and born in the USA get discarded because of the pop hits that made the albums famous. However the deep cuts, particularly on the River are also genius/slice of life stuff that made me love Springsteen before he became a complete leftist idiot.

Last one that I think should make the list is London Calling by the clash. I could be wrong, but I think they started the reggae/rock trend of the time with that album.

If you haven't listened to Greenville's Marcus King, you should...one of the greatest young guitarists anywhere, and an excellent singer and songwriter also.

Impressive list! I’m likely younger than most who replied @ 28 years old, though I’ve got an appreciation for multiple genres of music. I’d like to add the following to your list of musicians who achieved mastery:

U2 with Joshua Tree: There’s not a single track on this album that should be skipped. Bono’s soulful voice & The Edge’s bass lines standout from the opening track. While they don’t have the edginess of Guns ‘N Roses or the forerunner status of Aerosmith, The Beatles, & The Rolling Stones, U2’s status as the rock band of the ‘80s is solidified by their mastery of their craft.

Jay-Z: say what you will about rap & hip-hop, Jay-Z’s induction into the Rock & Roll HOF says it all. His ability to combine cutting edge beats with creative lyrics (though I’m sure those of certain demographics & ethnicities will disagree), along with his skills in the production booth serve to reinforce his status as a master rapper.

in the Hall of Fame, including Marshall Tucker and Jethro Tull! It is an absolute shame that Marshall Tucker isn't in it! As great as Skynyrd and Allman Brothers were, MTB was probably the most innovative of all the southern rock bands...masterful at combining rock, country, jazz and blues! And very few guitarists were better than Toy Caldwell.

is even better than Late For the Sky IMO. Can't mention Willie Nelson without Red Headed Stranger. Took the rock opera concept and made it country.

For me some others: Music from Big Pink by The Band, Gilded Palace of Sin by the Flying Burrito Brothers, The Battle by George Jones, best country voice ever on incredible display, The River by Springsteen, Exile on Mainstreet by the Stones, Moondance by Van Morrison, Waylon Live with 42 tracts!, and more recently Adobe Sessions by Cody Jinks and Diamonds and Gasoline by the Turnpike Troubadours, great stuff from the alt country genre

A few years ago I was flipping the channels and landed on a documentary on the band Kansas. Watched about 10 minutes and got hooked. If you are a fan a music, then I encourage you to watch it. The lead songwriter was on the level of Mozart and Beethoven in terms of the way he composed the music. I'm not eloquent enough to do it justice, but here is the link I just found for the trailer.

I woke up in a Soho doorway
A policeman knew my name
He said, you can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away

I staggered back to the underground
And the breeze blew back my hair
I remember throwin' punches around
And preachin' from my chair
