Trotter, Bentley, Carter and Simpson. Could morph to a 3-4. Plus the others

Kudos to BV, Skalski & Spector

For coaching up Carter and young talent. The rest of this year will be about preparing for a turnaround in 2022, so hopefully #0 will keep getting p.t.

The rest of this year is about trying to win 5 more football games and maybe a bowl game.

Didn’t look so great on the second TD pass of the game….

Oct 27, 2021, 2:06 PM

Look I know it was a bare defensive call, as soon as the Pitt QB came out of the huddle and saw number 0 lined up on his slot receiver his eyes probably lit up as he knew he had a LB on a WR in zero coverage?? Who the hell came up with that scheme? They only had three WR’s out wide? Didn’t get that coverage at all and the kid was set up to fail. That being said the fail was epic? He didn’t just get beat because of speed he bit on the lamest move off the line and was totally turned around and the WR was open by about seven yards?? Bad scheme or not the kids got a long way to go before he’s great?

Yo there TigerDadfromNJ,

Pretty tough take on B.Carter, but your overall observation of that particular play seem spot on.

Not sure if (A) the defense's call intended to put B.Carter as the one-on-one defender on the WR -or- (B) if the defense could not get lined up correctly for Pitt's quasi-hurry up offense ... leaving B.Carter naked and on his own to handle a situation for which he was (obviously) not ready.

Scenario (A) is really bad; scenario (B) is the bad breaks which occasionally hit the good teams (and in which the Pitt offense had to refrain from high-fiving each other before they scored the sure TD).

To B.Carter's credit in the interview, he acknowledged that he's got a lot to learn from the experienced players and from the coaches. Again, while a confident kid, B.Carter is smart enough and humble enough to recognize his limitations and areas for growth.

I am excited about what B.Carter will mean for our defense in 2022 and 2023.

Again, smart observation about the overall play and the set-up prior for the Pitt TD prior to the snap.

Re: Didn’t look so great on the second TD pass of the game….

Oct 27, 2021, 3:42 PM

Yes, very RARE to find fault with BV but that play call was a bust to say the least - not the young LB's fault. He's going to be a good one! In this case it was just another example of the D starting well and getting worn out (too many plays and loss now of depth due to injury) as the game goes on- struggling to make one last stop in every game and in this case, not able to get a stop and get the ball back when we had to have it. You can find excuses for the D but rankings tell us who we are on both sides of the ball - every aspect needs to get better as we all know.

Thank you for understanding my point. I’m as big a fan as anyone on here. I truly think the offensive woes have been so so bad it’s enabled the defense to skate by. The defense hasn’t won us a game this year. The reality is GT is a bit a good team and Syracuse and BC were kind enough to make critical errors when the game was winnable

What a dope. Seriously? You're blaming the kid for that? First of all, you know jack squat about football. Then, you are #### rude, New Jersey style, about it.

Read what I wrote and easy on the name calling. I blamed the scheme for that but I pointed out that the kid got totally turned around on a simple head fake and was beat by seven yards. Yes the scheme was awful but he got beat pretty bad. Ease up. I’m staying the obvious. I’m not ripping the kid

I know you wouldn’t address me that way in person. My football acuity as well as my IQ far exceeds yours. When you have to use your letter words and insults it simply shows not only your lack of class and vocabulary but your overall low rent station in life. You’re a disgrace to this forum. I don’t swear to be 100% right. I simply put forth my opinion and I’m easily able to back it up. You on the other hand do nothing of the sort you just hurl insults and snarky comments. You’re a small little man. I’m so sorry that it was so easy to get under your simple minded skin? Please don’t drink a six pack of PBR’s and take it out on your wife and kids later, when the double wide isn’t clean and your hamburger helper is t exactly the way you like it. If you look at this defense and see a championship defense I can only imagine what your wife looks like.

His natural instincts are to cover the flats

Oct 28, 2021, 1:13 PM [ in reply to Didn’t look so great on the second TD pass of the game…. ]

not chase a streaking slot receiver down the seam... maybe there was a bust on the backside of the coverage where the free safety didn't recognize needing to shade to help the LB rather than the boundary side...
That's one play out of all the snaps that he has played that earned him the start. C'mon dude, we give up a TD every game that looks horrible but you're being overly critical of Carter because of that one play. I guarantee that the film review probably exposed a bigger flaw in that coverage than his biting on the feint...

Re: His natural instincts are to cover the flats

Oct 28, 2021, 1:30 PM

Look at what I wrote I wasn’t overly critical of the kid. I was very critical of the scheme and that you have a LB covering a slot receiver with no safety help over the top. That being said if you watched the play the scheme wasn’t the only reason for him being open by seven yards, he was that open because the kid bit on a fake and was beaten terribly. I didn’t call him names or attack the kid I just pointed something out that everyone with eyes watched. If he was beaten because of scheme only that’s one thing but that throw was so easy because of how he got turned around

A little off topic here but…

Oct 27, 2021, 2:26 PM

The defense has gotten a pass all season because of how badly the offense has played but let’s be honest. This defense is not that good either? NC State had 31 first downs, controlled the clock with 43 minutes of TOP and every time they needed to make a play they did. GT wasn’t having any issues moving the all at the end of the game? Look at every single game. UGA ends the game with a 10 play fove minute drive, GT had a 16 play 70 yard drive that ate up seven minutes recovered an onside kick and proceeded to run a nine play drive that ended on downs. NC Statw should’ve won at the end of regulation with a 13 play 5 minute drive that ended with a shanked field goal. BC ran a 9 play drive and a 7 play drive the latter ending at the Clemson 11 yard line with a fumbled snap. Syracuse runs a 16 play four minute drive at games end that led to another shanked field goal in the waning seconds. Pitt ends the game with a 15 play 8 minute that was humiliating. The only game where TOP was tilted way to the other side was against the pack, the rest it was pretty even so what is going on with this “great defense” and why has no one said a word about it?? It was the defense against Pitt that gave up a ninety yard drive and another easy score in the last five minutes of the second quarter? Has the defense been that much better than our offense? The answer is absolutely not. The defense has been incredibly fortunate and without some dumb like and poor opposing coaching decisions this team should be 1-7!! Nolan Turner, I’ve said this for two years, stinks!! Great story, but stinks. Venables younger kid? Lump him with Turner. Skalski I love his heart but he’s undersized, Slow, and as games go on you watch him get pushed around. By midway through the second quarter our defensive line was exhausted? How is that. The first quarter they dominated the line of scrimmage. Venables brought some pressure but played zone. Midway through the second Venables started bringing all kinds of pressure and goes to man to man? Pickett was totally confused with the zone coverage. So rather than stick woth that we make Kenny Pickett look like a heisman candidate? Think of how pathetic that is Deshaun watson and Trevor Lawrence didn’t come close to a heisman but Kenny Pickett is getting one. Same Pickett that had EIGHT YARDS passing against us in the ACC title game? Look at where we rank with TFL and sacks? The defense is just as terrible as the offense

Re: If you truly think this....

Oct 27, 2021, 3:59 PM

Clueless?? Look at the stats. Numbers don’t lie? Why is it at the end of every single game this year but one against an fcs team our defense has not been able to get off the field? You’re calling me names but look at the numbers? In the last five minutes of all the games we’ve played against D-1 teams get ready for this. We’ve run a total of 12 plays while our opponents have run 84?? Our opponents have averaged 13 plays in the last five minutes to our two? Against UGA, GT, NC state Syracuse and Pitt it had zero to do woth the offense our opponents got the ball and jammed it down our “great” defenses throat? Look it up if you want it’s dead accurate. Hood defenses stop teams on third down, they don’t make stupid penalties that keep drives going (90 yard drive by Pitt aided by spectors moronic penalty on third down) I’m a huge fan I’m not a hater. All I’m saying is the defense has been just as putrid when the games are on the line as the offense. The games we won weren’t because the defense won them it was because the other team screwed it up? If you don’t want to see that god bless you but it’s reality.

Re: If you truly think this....

Oct 27, 2021, 4:41 PM

When your offense is so bad, then your defense is on the field a lot more than they normally would be. So a twisted mind such as yours can twist the numbers around all you like.

So, sometimes numbers do lie.

Oh, and you are clueless and an ####### too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If you truly think this....

Oct 27, 2021, 5:47 PM

Look at the stats. The only game with top tilted heavily to one side was NC State. The other games it was 31-29. So our defense according to you cannot withstand being on the field for half the game? Ease up on the name calling. What did I say disrespectful to you? Nothing. I’m not twisting numbers I’m pointing out the obvious. Maybe you should learn to read. All I said was the defense is just as off as the offense is and you go all “my panties are in a wad and I’m angry and I’m going to call the guy that has an opinion that differs from mine names.” Grow up champ. You have your opinion. Obviously one that comes from a non football mind that chooses to see things that aren’t true. I wish I could believe in unicorns and fairy’s like you do too

Look at the great defenses of the past. Check our the 89 91 or 2018 D. We are now where close to that level. We have no war daddy on the DL. We are undersized and slow in the front 7. Great teams have the best player or players on the field. We have no Dex , CW42, Cle Ferrell, Kirkland, McGlockton, Perry etc. We have no truly great defensive player in our front 7 currently. We have some good players but no dominant player. Again we are small and slow. We need more size and athleticism

Oh my god someone who agrees woth me. Look out sir you’re about to be called names and told that you’re a moron. I agree whole heartedly with you. Who on our defense gets you excited? Who’s going to make the big play? How many game changing picks has Sheridan dropped? How many missed sack opportunities has Murphy had? How many third and threes has our opponent gotten woth ease? Booth is the best player on the field. Biggest heart and best tackler. A CB being the best tackler should alarm anyone that knows anything about football. The Simpson kid, the one that we allowed Mike Jones to transfer so he could play has underwhelmed. Most games go by without ever noticing he’s on the field.

Oct 28, 2021, 2:04 PM

UGA defense on the field for 31:29 keep in mind though before the last drive Clemson held the TOP edge. GT 30:10 but held a 29 to 22 edge in TOP UNTIL GT held the ball for 8:05 of the final 8:12 in the game. NC State dominated TOP but let’s be honest the defense was terrible 11-21 on third downs. 31 first downs and couldn’t get off the field. BC 30:19 but in the last 4:53 they ran 16 plays to our three and we couldn’t get off the field. Syracuse Clemson owned the edge 32:59-27:01 yet with only being on the field for 23 minutes the defense allowed a 14 play four minute drive that started at the Syracuse 7? Pittsburgh was disgraceful. Yes Pitt held a TOP advantage of 36:07-23:53 but look at the second half? First drive of the second half with our defense well rested 11 play drive that ate up 5:46 for a field goal, next drive 11 plays 5:48, last drive 14 plays 7:58 in the last two drives Pitt passed the ball only three times out of 25 plays. So the defense being tired isn’t an excuse. Against Pitt the defense looked tired halfway through the second quarter? Why? Why were we getting pressure of the Pitt QB and then it ended. If you tell me adjustments that is fair but then where is our adjustments. I’m not bashing anyone I’m not being critical I’m saying simply that our defense isn’t as good as people say it is either. The Pitt game was winnable even with the offense being awful but our defense couldn’t hold the line. I know there injuries and outside factors but it seems there is a lack of talent or inability to make a play when it matters.

So having an opinion means I should get beat up. Don’t tell me Brent doesn’t know exactly what I said. Remember when he was complaining about not being a bend not break defense? Yeah I from nj but I’m an alumni as our my children so enough with the name calling. I’ve been nothing but respectful. You make comments about my being from New Jersey or being rude. Please? You’ve handled yourself like school on Saturday. No class. Pittsburgh held the ball for the last eight minutes of the game that’s a good defense? Really? Wake up? I don’t care how long you’ve been on the field. Good defenses stop the opponent when it’s most important. The only game you could say that might have happened was gt. BC fumbled a snap otherwise they score. Defense did nothing there but recover it. That was luck. Syracuse coach choked and tried a field goal and the kid missed otherwise that game goes into OT and they lose that one. If you don’t agree with me and I’m so wrong tell me why? You can’t so you do what children do when they know they’re wrong they call people names. I bet you watch the view because that’s what you sound lije. You don’t defend your belief why I’m wrong you just call me names and insult me about nj. I guarantee I’ve put more money into that school than you make in five years. So unless you’ve got some football answers zip it sporty spice

Pitt only had the ball three times in the second half? Three times. That’s it? They were tired from playing 19 minutes of football heading into the second half? Stop making excuses for the defense the defense is not what we’ve come to expect and anyone with half a football brain sees that?

Sorry I have to correct that Pitt had the ball for a little over 15 minutes in the first half and ran 38 plays. Clemson had the ball for 14 minutes and change and ran 37 plays. So please I’m dying to understand why our defense was so beat up and tired and there’s wasn’t? Our defense didn’t take the field until there was 6:56 left in the third quarter, so after halftime and more than half of the third quarter our defenses excuse is they were on the field too much and ran too many plays? The game was 21-10 and winnable when Pitt ran off almost six minutes and kicked a field goal? Just stop. I wish there was some big excuse. There isn’t the defense is not that good. Period
