Did I overreact?

Nov 23, 2021, 4:04 PM

Drove across town today to meet with a business consultant / tax guy to figure out how to obscure some of my taxable income via an S-corp or C-corp following my LLC filing.

I show up on time and have all my paperwork, spreadsheets, etc. ready.

I sit down and wait for 5 minutes. Then 10 minutes. No big deal.

After 15 minutes, the receptionist says he's wrapping up and will be with me soon.

I wait 15 more minutes --- patiently.

At about 1:35 (the appointment was at 1), I just kind of get the sense that I'm in the wrong place. So I get up and leave, citing that I have taken A/L to set this appointment and that I only set aside an hour so have to go back to work. TentDweller would have been a little harder to deal with on this issue...but he's been hiding and letting God handle things he can't control.

Should I have held my horses and been more patient, or did I do the right thing by ensuring that this particular service doesn't get the pleasure of working with the next Elon Musk?

The only thing you did wrong was

Nov 23, 2021, 4:13 PM

Not leaving after 15 minutes.

If the earlier appointment ran long he should have asked them to schedule a follow up and sent them on their way.
Back when I had enough coin in different places to need an accountant, the one I used was very explicit “your appointment is for __. If it turns out we need more time, I will be happy to schedule a follow up with you. ‘

She always had me out of there 5-10 minutes before my time slot was up.

Wow. I'd have bolted far earlier. You were too nice IMO

Lemme see, in 20 years, appointments I've been late for.....humm.

I recall one, was a hearing. Adjuster called to tell me a new time. I wrote down 2 and she said 10. Miscommunication, should have emailed me the hearing notice, but I took the hit on that one. Other is the time I went to an attorney's office, to find it was an opthamologist office. Called and they moved to a new location. I gave myself a pass because they failed to update their address on their website. Was almost 5 minutes late once because of a flat tire. But 5 minutes is still fashionably late.

Think that's about it. And I have about 150+ appointments a year or so.

I think you reacted perfectly. The only thing left

to do now is

I’ve fully embraced Zoom for this kind of stuff. I sit patiently with my camera off going about my business until thetardyass shows up.

The old adage, “Could we have done this over email” has become “Can this be on Zoom?”

Did he try and call you after you left?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He did not. I guess he saw my balance sheet and

decided he doesn't care lol

He prob gets a set fee regardless.***

Yeah, he's paid a consult fee by the 1/2 hour

Nov 23, 2021, 4:46 PM

Which is all the more reason why it doesn't make sense to overbook.

You should send him a bill

Other people to be on time for appointments. If not, the person needs to provide a valid reason. Unless it was an emergency, the reason needs to come before the appointment. If this does not happen, then probably not a person with whom I need to work.

I'd say you played it about right. 35 mins is a long time for a previously scheduled meeting.

Shid happens, but when I needed to hold someone off that long I'd at least offer to reschedule, or walk out and greet them myself to apologize, or offer them whatever we had to offer, food, booze, or women, rather than just have them sit there waiting.

When doing the waiting, 15-20 is about the limit, short of the exact treatment in reverse. The guy comes out to me, apologizes and says they are wrapping it up, etc. He has a schedule so a courteous person realizes you do as well.

You might have stopped by his restroom on the way out to leave a message on the way out the door...

In another life this would not have been out of the question

Nov 23, 2021, 4:36 PM

My dad did this very thing at Burger King when he and my mom were still together. He probably would have been about my age at the time.

Even bringing the topic up disgusts / makes my Mom mad as FIRE to this day. Says she knew when he did that that the marriage wasn't gonna work out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No you did not. I have almost zero tolerance for people who

Nov 23, 2021, 4:31 PM

run late, whether business or personal. It's unprofessional in business, I won't even put up with it with doctors, dentists, lawyers, etc. Or the guy cleaning out my gutters. It's all the same.

Same in personal life. You know the ones... you're meeting them for dinner at 6:30. You get there at 6:15... you left early, just to be sure, in case of heavy traffic or a wreck. At 7:00 they're texting you with the usual excuses and apologies. You've already been there for 45 minutes. But this is how they live life, always running behind on everything. It's rude and inconsiderate. I've had friends that I stopped planning anything with, it's just too irritating.

Better to be an hour early than 5 minutes late, as mom always said.

Not at all.

Nov 23, 2021, 5:19 PM

Having been in that line of business for over 40 years, this ain't like going to the doctor. I never let a client sit more than 5 minutes. It is a client service industry - this shows he/she does not have time for you, does not prioritize you, etc. Find another advisor.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

BTW, I have not kept up with S election stuff for a while

Nov 23, 2021, 5:29 PM

but it used to be a 75 day limit - you had to elect within the first 75 days of forming corporation/LLC. I do think they have late election 'relief', but that means more paperwork.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks for the heads up. I was not aware that there was

Nov 23, 2021, 7:00 PM

a window for that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In the old days it was a very strict rule and caused a lot

Nov 23, 2021, 7:15 PM

of issues. They came out with some late election relief about 10 years ago and made it easier, but I really do not know if that has changed.

Worse case is a short year - so you are not an S corp for part of the year and are for the remainder - but that means 2 tax returns. Yuck.
