Did Dabo's blind loyalty to DJ damage our teams culture?

Dec 5, 2022, 8:07 PM

Yes a few of the transfer made since(DJ, Pace)... but almost 10 players with the potential for more makes one question if our culture is as strong as we believed it to be.

Sorry to say that with the advent of the new Portal rules, culture went down the tubes. Kids want to play.

If you understood the Clemson culture and were perhaps a little less quick to reflexive reply to anything and everything, you would notice that Clemson’s culture matters more than ever in today’s environment.

You saw it in action in the ACC Championship. You’ll see it again in the bowl game.

If anyone questions our culture based on DJ then you're not seeing the social media responses from the team. Every member of the team. DJ IS the culture at its finest hour.

Actually, all you need to read is BT Potter public message to him. I can quareentee you that if Dabo handled the situation any different, the culture would have been destroyed and you'd have a Texas AM in Clemson. You sure that's what you want?

Exactly. We would have Texas AM. Handled differently and a cancer could have started.
Looking at it from the position of a parent or grandparent you’d have to respect the way Dabo treated DJ. I’d discourage my kid from going somewhere where they are no more than a commodity.
I’d also understand why the change was made.
My granddaughter went to the portal. She was too young to expect much playing time but it came down to respect and dignity. She never would have left with a coach like Dabo who respected her as a person.

Clemgalalways® ... You know I'm a fan of yours ... but has Clemson evolved to a stage where coaches know longer play our best players? They defer to the most popular players? Looks like it based on this season and 2022 uSC game.

They will say one thing in public, but another in private.

If you think there aren’t people on that team that are pissed that CK didn’t play sooner and that we would’ve beaten South Carolina and be in the playoffs, you are sadly mistaken.

I think it’s hilarious that people come on here and think they know what over 100 kids believe in their heart

shed a block.

But I get what you're saying and know you'll TD me for what Im saying:

Clemson's culture is not the be-all end-all in today's landscape.

Lotsa players just wanna win rings here and hopefully go make zillions in the League. (Let's be honest.)

Dabo would say "Yeah, and our culture's the straightest path to that."

But lately, it doesnt seem that's happening for more and more players. Otherwise, why hit the portal?

Take DJ for example: Is it his fault he walked in a 5* and is walking out a portal player?

You seem to be suggesting it kind of is.

Do you love getting on your knees for that Dabo worship

Kids that go to a program like Clemson go first and foremost to win football games! To win championships!

I have watched plenty of Clemson players walk off the field after another three and out with DJ looking like absolute garbage, and the frustration on their faces!

I also saw how the team instantly responded to CK and how ecstatic they were with his success and winning!

Who do you think these guys want leading the team next year? DJ or CK?

Who do you think the players wanted leading the team when Trevor Lawrence was there?

Yes, they are a big brotherhood and they talk about all that, but at the end of the day they want to win championships, and they know and believe and want the best players on the field! And if you don’t believe that, you’re delusional!

Clemson University first, they pay him a Godaweful lot of money. Next the fans and alumni, they are Clemson that's where the money comes from, then the team as a whole, then and only then an individual...how would you like to have been a WR on this team and been told over 2 years that you can't catch a pass when you have had only a few thrown your that were catchable...that will screw with culture fasterthan anything! How many kids do you that like being labeled as losers? Now if you are a HS receiver you will want to come to Clemson...that will enhance recruiting! Go Tigers!

Dabo built it. You can't handle the truth!

Dec 5, 2022, 8:48 PM

I've been wondering if maybe Cade wasn't the guy since the GT game. DJU had moments but his lows were very low. But, I honestly don't get people questioning Dabo. HE BUILT CLEMSON. Yes we existed long before Dabo took the helm. But, I gotta tell you the 90s and 2000s were not great years to be a Clemson fan.

Dabo rebuilt Clemson. He defined the culture. Heck, he IS the culture. And people feel justified in questioning what he has built and from which we have benefited?

You have the luxury of not knowing what I know; that DJU's miserable QB play, while tragic, probably won games long-term. And Dabo's decisions, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, *wins games*. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want Dabo on that sideline. You need him on that sideline. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very prestige that Dabo provides, and then questions the manner in which he provides it!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This forum is infected with people that are members of a cult, exactly like people that vote, Democrat, exactly like people that I thought were conservatives that were supporting vaccine mandates and lockdowns when there was not one shred of evidence that any of that worked. They were denying common sense, and basic ability to look at that Numbers and do elementary statistics, which was slapping people in the face with the truth from the earliest days.

Lowcountry we think alike buddy. I have not posted much on here but some of these experts with thousands of post who go out of their way to slam anyone for a comment or a question is not what you should be doing. Read and think about what you just read. I would say 100 percent on here know Dabo built one awesome program but saying he can't screw up and make a huge mistake is ridiculous. I think he made a mistake especially giving up a home winning streak to the team he did it with. Please someone explain how a player can just not be ready but 6 days later he is winning a MVP. I don't buy it one bit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Did Dabo's blind loyalty to DJ damage our teams culture?

Dec 6, 2022, 12:09 AM

Maybe in an indirect way. First, the culture went out the window with the new NIL/transfer rules. Though they should just be students, they're now professional athletes and students in name only. They're going to make the decision any employee makes. Where are they valued the most and which organization gives them the best chance of making the next level. The culture Dabo created doesn't work in that world. That's the main reason. But since we can't offer $$$$, we need to be able to offer championships. Our struggling to make the playoffs (and our getting blown out the last two times we did) hurts us there. Many of these kids weren't in high school yet when we won in 2018. And in that way, DJ definitely hurt us (along with others).

So I would say DJ's not really involved in the degradation of our culture, but he has a loose tie to our falling from one of the 2-3 elite programs to a top 10 one.

Understanding Dabo’s reluctance to change QB’s earlier in the year, you have to realize coaching a college team is more than X’s and O’s. It is about morale and spirit. Dabo’s kids are on the team and he knows the mood of the team. Some remarks here were outlandish, implying he would lose to prove a point and so on. Does anyone really believe he would do something like that to a team he loves, has brought to the pinnacle and his sons play on?
