Dexter Lawrence at defensive end for Giants?

May 29, 2019, 11:21 AM

Dexter Lawrence at defensive end

Reports indicated that Dexter Lawrence, the 342-pound collegiate nose tackle selected 17th overall by the Giants, was aligned at defensive end during practice. He was with the second team.

That seems odd, to be honest. The Giants, though, had success playing B.J. Hill, a pure run-stuffing nose tackle at N.C. State, as a defensive end in their base 3-4 alignment a season ago. Perhaps they see a similar role for Lawrence.

Patricia Traina reported that Lawrence did get a few first-team reps.

Giants and Jets have no clue what they're doing it seems like right now.

Not surprised hearing the news, but it does seem like odd placement for him.

If the Giants play a 3-4, then possibly Dexter could play End, assuming that the OLBs secure the edge.

The 3-4 scheme will tend to have the lineman move around a bit. I'd expect to see him at nose tackle and lined up a bit outside at defensive end, along with BJ Hill and Tomlinson. I love having another tiger on Big Blue but I wasn't in love with selecting Big Dex when we have a glaring need for help with pass rush. Hopefully the big bodies up front free up blitzing linebackers but that's TBD.

3-4 is a little different. You need a dt/de tweeter at one

Of the spots. Maybe they are impressed with his quickness off the ball

This means nothing right now. Wait until the fall

3-4 DE, not 4-3 DE

In the 3-4 defense, the ends tend to be much bigger space eaters that are still agile enough to contain. The OLBs are the pass rushers, not the DEs.

So honestly, he fits pretty well there.
