Deliverance (50 years later)

Aug 1, 2022, 4:47 PM

I have lived among these boys for 20 years and never once been asked to "squeal like a pig".
"Good ole boys" in this area are salt of the Earth types. One huge difference I discovered is while in many places folks will "want or try" to help you, these folks actually can, and will. No where on Earth are folks as nice.

I know things as to it all - maybe.
Scenes were filmed near me. That river helps form the Tugaloo River which I live on. At one time was a lodge/bar they used. K and I would frequent. Lots of signed photos on the wall. Once we spent the night there and saw the 'Amazing Rhythm Aces'.
Many of yall still flock to the Chattooga River, as well you should.

==================The movie is one of my favorites.

The director is from England. It is another typical Hollywood movie projecting that folks in the Southern mountains are cretin. Still, I don't think anyone could not like this movie.
During the filming author James Dickey showed up and entered into a bitter argument with producer-director John Boorman, who had rewritten Dickey's ######. They allegedly had a fistfight in which Boorman, a much smaller man than Dickey, suffered a broken nose and four shattered teeth.

It was filmed in Tallulah Gorge. This is truly "GOD's country". In the day celebrities and Presidents went there for some fun. Once Tallulah Gorge was a "destination" for the rich and famous.
That river is one of the purest of waters left in the USA, as is the Tugaloo River. Folks have been drinking from it for thousands of years, and one still can.

One of my child hood heroes - Arthur Smith - had to sue them (and won) as they ripped off one of his tunes for the famous banjo scenes. All in these parts grew up with Arthur.
If you are not a fan of guys like Burt Reynolds, then why are you reading this?

Great movie filmed near Clemson.

Arthur Smith recorded Feudin’ Banjos ? in the Andrew Jackson hotel, downtown Rock Hill.
The ### scene with Dickey was on Jocassee.
Dickey was appointed the eighteenth United States Poet Laureate in 1966. Said he flunked English at Clemson?

Bill McKinney who said “squeal like a pig” (from Chattanooga) was killed with an arrow by Burt Reynolds, killed by Clint Eastwood with a sword in “The Outlaw Josey Wales” , and killed in the Barroom shootout by John Wayne in “The Shootist”.
Giving Bill the ‘Bad Guy’ trifecta, getting killed by my favorite stars (all in the 1970’s).

McKinney also appeared in a Columbo episode where Johnny Cash was the bad guy. In one scene he slugs Johnny.

If I am not mistaken, Dickey taught at SCar.

And, he appears in the movie as the sheriff at the end of the movie.

Arthur Smith and Don Reno wrote feuding banjos. Later Eric Weiss added a little and played it in the movie. Don was born in Buffalo S.C. He served in World War II in Pacific with Merrills Marauders and was wounded. Probably one of top three banjo players ever. Was with Arthur Smith and later teamed with Red Smiley.

I watched a great interview with James Dickey some years ago. When the interviewer asked him why he left Clemson, he replied he failed freshman english. He left Clemson to join the Army Air Corps. I'm guessing the idea of failing english made for a better story. He got his english degree at Vandy magna ### laude. (can't say magna ### laude, lol)

He was also asked about violence in his writings. Very seriously he said, "I want to die a violent death." Then with a devilish grin, "Maybe ate up by a grizzly bear". I forgive him for wasting his talent in Cootlumbia.
