Defense Won't Miss a Beat

Sep 1, 2022, 11:03 AM

I was a huge fan of Coach Venables, and I've always said that Clemson would not have won the 2016 and 2018 national championships without him.

That being said, the legacy of a stout defense at Clemson will continue, despite the departure of the outstanding, fiery and passionate defensive coordinator.

Here's what I am expecting from Wes and the Clemson defense going forward...

We need to be injury free and better than last year to win the ACC.

It sounds like; If I am reading the tea leaves right, there is going to be more reliance on "prep work" during the week. I.E. allowing the players to trust their eyes - but not falling for eye candy!

Repping tendencies to the point - they know what to do and can adjust to it even if a call isn't made. If everyone "see's the same thing and adjust to the formation and personnel groups based off film study" then players can simply get in the pre-talked about positions to handle whatever the offense is doing.

They can play faster. This defense should be much faster - so even if they aren't in perfect position! Speed can "make them right"!

I'm looking forward to seeing what I hope to be a very stout defense!

My dream is a defense that is well-rested due to an offense that eats a lot of clock on the strength of a physical, run-blocking offensive line. This has been my dream for many years. With the offensive line coach change and OC coaching changes, maybe this will be the year.

That won’t win games

That’s why Saban pivoted from that approach about 7 years ago. What you are describing is exactly the way Bama won their first 3 titles under Saban.

Sorry I meant to say won’t win national championships, will win plenty of games, just not the ones that matter.

The first part of my message below got cut off: You're right. I have no interest in trying to do what Bama used to do offensively. I also realize finding/developing linemen who can run block and pass protect extremely well is not easy, so achieving a good balance is extremely difficult.

What I have in mind is closer to what the offense is now, but with improvement running the ball, especially in short yardage situations. I know we aren't running a pro-style offense, but I want the effect to be the same as the 1990s Dallas Cowboys who would kill you with Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman. In our case, it would be more Aikman and not as much Smith in a college spread offense.

Talent wise, we are tops. But until it plays out, I can only hope.
