Deer Tigernet: First post, I could really use your advice

Nov 6, 2015, 3:50 PM

WARNING: THIS MAY BE LONG BUT I APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE/INPUT

So, as you can see this is my first post. On my honor I am not a coot, so please do not landblast me (see I know how to use correct TNet spelling). I considered using lightbulbbill's random capitalization to further enhance my credibility but, to be honest, I am not sure how he does that.

Anyway, long story short, I grew up in SC and attended Clemson off and on from 1993-1998. Things did not work out as expected so I enlisted in the Army in 1999. Eventually I graduated from University of Wyoming (it's gonna be a barnburner in 2021) and received my Army commission via ROTC.

Multiple deployments and 16 years later I am now attending MIT on the Army's dime in the Leaders for Global Operations Program(LGO). This is a 24-month dual degree program where I earn an MBA and an MS in Electrical Engineering.

Now, there are 50 students accepted in the program every year (I am the first active duty military student) and on Monday afternoons we have a seminar on leadership/business where the speaker is typically someone in the corporate world. The students arrange for the speakers and I wanted to invite Coach Swinney to speak sometime next Spring to our group as I think he would be a great speaker on the topic of leadership.

I know it is a longshot to get Coach Swinney to come and speak at MIT, but I wanted to tap into the collective wisdom of TNet (dangerous, I know) to get ideas about how best to present the invitation.

Anyway thanks for reading and any advice is appreciated.

BTW, my brother already promised to log in and respond to this post with "Tell ,em coot".

Tell him it's an interview for the Bama job. Say you don't want Saban to get suspicious, so it's being conducted in Cambridge.

There's no wisdom to asking beyond the doing. Good luck with this and all.

Obviously you are smart and good with technology.

I would hack his computer where he keeps his playbook, and encrypt his hard drive. Use a passphrase he'll never guess, like Love4MikeBellamy. Then let him know, sternly, yet respectfully, that if he ever wants the contents of his hard drive back, he will need to perform this speech for you.

hope this helps, and thank you for your service.

Didn't see that coming.

Full disclosure: when I resurrected this account in 2010 it was to try and score some tickets while I was on leave from an OIF deployment

It'd help if there was a super-recruit in the MA area.

Hey lightbulbill.

I knew I was going to eventually have to address that. My only defense is that I originally created this username way back in the Dark Ages of the internet when I was thoroughly pissed off at the commentators for the 1996 (I think) Gator Bowl - Bob Trumpy kept mispronouncing Clemson on NBC; I created the name to make a point on the NBC message board. Alas, I drank too much on that day and I never did post on that board.

As genuine a person as Dabo is, I think all you have to do

Nov 6, 2015, 4:47 PM

is put what you just wrote into a formal letter and send it him at the athletic department.

Re: As genuine a person as Dabo is, I think all you have to do

Nov 6, 2015, 4:58 PM

Thanks for the reply (and to everyone else who has taken the time to reply). Your response aligns with my way of thinking in that I think the best approach is to just lay it all out in a letter and let the chips fall where they may.

As for me, it's back to the Army for another 5-6 years. However, my classmates will be assuming prominent positions within some of the biggest/most successful companies in America. In these positions they have the power to, directly or indirectly, affect the lives/livelihood of a lot of American workers.

I think it would be a good thing if they were exposed to a different perspective on leadership than what we typically hear in our seminar. For example, my brother and I played football at a small high school in SC and when we have the chance to get together one or the other always ends up quoting our high school coach (Usually it is my brother because, while I was a wide receiver, my brother was on the O-line and most of our coach's quotes were about the importance of the O-line).

Maybe it's no coincidence my former coach played at Clemson.

I would email him. He does have an admin ro check his

Nov 6, 2015, 5:07 PM

email and prioritize things for him. He helps a LOT of folks by speaking, including former players such as Brandon Maye, Chad Carson, etc... I think if you presented an organized plan in email or even letter format, then you would get the best response. Good Luck.

Thanks. I looked up the "official" email address and it looks like it goes to Don Munson. Does that sound right?

Nov 6, 2015, 5:24 PM

First and foremost thank you for your service, second I don't know him personally but as great of a person as Dabo is I doubt that as long as he has the time that it would be too hard to get him to on board anyways sorry I know this post wasn't really any help but I mainly just wanted to tell you thanks and good luck

Is a huge tiger fan. He's a senior in aero/Astro (course 16). Lives across river on BU campus. I would think Dabo might go but you might need some major clout to do the invite. There are a lot of well known people there that could be tapped...

We appreciate your service to our country and good luck at MIT. As for Dabo, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he accepted your invitation, he really is someone that takes the idea of 'being of service to others' very seriously.

On another note, since your at MIT can you give us the inside scoop on Aliens? Asking for a friend.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.
