Thoughts on the game tonight...

Nov 7, 2022, 10:03 PM

Was at the game, interested to see what the roster looks like.

- Chase Hunter looked solid overall running the point, no turnovers I recall, several great assists, and shot the ball well. Thought he tried to do a bit too much at times taking it into his own hands and got burned, but overall impressed.

- So glad that we have Hunter Tyson back, guy is a baller on both ends of the court in my opinion. When he was off the court it was noticeable, he will be the most key piece to this team outside of PJ Hall.

- Brevin Galloway plays hard and will be a solid experience piece, made several good hustle plays and looks to be a good shooter.

- Dillon Hunter looks like a solid player as well, just going to be hard to find minutes for him.

- Schieffelin impressed me most, did not expect that kind of game out of him. Played hard, kept many balls alive, very impressed. I'm not sure what happened to Middlebrooks but it kind of predicated Ian having to play a bunch, he is a bit undersized to play down low so much but also seems to play big.

- I read a lot about Josh Beadle and him being super athletic, can be a big scorer, etc., but I didn't see it tonight. He actually played a decent amount, but overall looked a bit disinterested.

- Hemenway is same as usual, shoots the 3 well (not tonight) but that's about it.

- Godfrey looks imposing, big guy, just didn't get to see him play much. Same goes for Wiggins, he didn't even get into the game unfortunately.

Our defense wasn't that bad, offense just didn't hit the shots they needed to. #10 on the Citadel kept jacking up threes at opportune times and making them, and there were two times a three point shooter was fouled to get bailed out.

Maybe it's just me getting back into the swing of basketball, but I just can't stand the CONSTANT block and charge situation. And the flopping is so bad, there were only a couple of times where it was obvious what the call was, but numerous times it could go either way, and it's frustrating to watch game flow get pushed one way or the other based on what the ref decides. I'd really like to see the NCAA crack down on the flopping like they proposed last year, but it does not appear that is going to happen.

First game, got the W, but if we play similarly on offense on Friday a win is not likely. We will see and Go Tigers!

Decent take, you were there

The freshmen were the biggest disappointment to me. If Hemenway is a starter all year, I'm not optimistic. From the radio call of the game, defense gave up several backdoors and to many 3's. That's not good with the vets getting most of the minutes. Friday is a game we need to win.

Yeah I wanted to see the new guys play, but outside of a few minutes for Godfrey and D. Hunter nobody really got any time. Beadle was dissapointing, but time will tell. Hemenway can be on the court when he is hitting shots, but tonight it didn't happen, otherwise he is a liability.

We didn't do a bad job guarding the three, there were only a few lapses, most of their 3's were contested or were being hucked up from way out by #10, Citadel just had a good shooting night from 3 (11-25).

I get that

my concern is they had no post presence like we'll certainly see. We should have been able to really pressure the 3's. I just don't see Hemenway being able to do that, and am not convinced Galloway can either honestly.

If I'm right, the lineup we need to eventually emerge is both Hunter's in the backcourt, I honestly don't know at 3, and Tyson and Hall up front. Would love for Sheffelin to be at 4 and Tyson at 3, but I just don't think Hunter can guard the quicker guys he'll face when the competition improves. He hasn't played 3 in four years here

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I enjoyed reading them.

Defense: You wrote that our defense was not "that bad". That is not a good sign because I am interpreting that as "it was not good". Just looking at the stats, our three point defense looks very bad. This is going to hurt against good teams.

Offense: Our three point shooting seems to be even worse than last year. Again, we are not going to get many ACC wins with less than 33% three point shooting.

I don't see anything in the stats that shows that we are a playoff team. Of course, anything can happen between now and then.

I think saying it wasn't that good is applicable as well, it was just average. We won't be a bad shooting team from 3, almost everyone we start is a capable shooter, they just weren't dropping tonight. It's just one game, my thoughts are mostly eye test kind of things, have seen many players come through over the years, no real game changers I noticed but time will tell.

Chief single handily won this game for us. His grit and hustle outshines everyone on the court tonight. He's put on muscle and ready to play low. Potential to be better than Tyson. Still , get hall back and Brad should play hall, Tyson and Chief with 2 guards. Middlebrook can come off the bench and spell them when needed.

I actually thought the opposite, when Chief went out, the team energy went down. Chase had a nice run at the end of the half, but can he be consistent?

One concern as was last year, can we defend the 3 ball? First game, hard to deduct anything from it. Can we keep the patented scoreless stretches at bay that lets teams creep back in? Hopefully. We'll know more after 5 or 6 games just how good this team can be.

I'd love for Tyson to play 3 when Hall returns

Nov 7, 2022, 10:24 PM

but I just don't think he can guard quicker wings, which we'll see plenty of. He's been a stretch 4 his whole career, he's never played on the wing.

We need a wing to emerge who can guard. I know that's not Hemenway, and it's never been Galloway's reputation. Beadle is athletic enough, but still very raw.

Solid win.

Was very impressed with hunter, Tyson, and Schef.

Was disappointed in the perimeter defense. We need to get better, and I think we will.

Props to the citadel for shooting so well. They suit 50% from 3 and were 10-12 from the ft line. That's solid.

I was at the game tonight and I actually thought we played well on offense. We moved well without the ball, shared the hall and found the open man, and were aggressive in attacking the paint. I have no doubt we will shoot the ball much better than that from three point range as the year progresses — there’s too much shooting on this roster not to.

The more worrisome thing for me was the defense. El Cid made some tough threes, but some of them weren’t so tough. We were late rotating and didn’t even challenge a couple shots.

The more Beadle we see and the less Hemenway, the better. Beadle did not play well tonight but he needs more run — he has big time potential.
