I worked on a golf course during the summer back then - all of us workers would take our lunch hour and watch this show. Some of the craziest, most BIZARRE stuff ever.
It was a talent show for bad talent. Usually had one pretty good one that would win. Most got "Gonged". And Chuck Barris was documented later to be coked out of his mind about 100% of the show.
Sample random episode: This ep has a very young Michael Winslow (Police Academy sound effect guy) as one of the acts. And strangely more "good" acts than bad.

indulgence, minus the fading idealistic hopefulness of the 60s, and this show epitomized all of the craziness that went along with that. Wide open crazy hilarious fun. And the pain that ultimately goes along with it. It was truly a great time to be alive, but it couldn't last forever.
