We have had a slightly undersized, hard hitting, very smart, linebackers under BV. They weren't the fastest certainly as Boulware got caught out of position a lot and Skalski couldn't cover that well. Especially on a fast tight end.
But they both had a knack for recognizing the play call before the snap because of how dedicated to film they were.
I personally like the more athletic linebackers we've had like Tre Lamar and Stephon Anthony. But I don't know if those guys were as much into watching film as the latter.
My main question for TNET today is:
How does BV being gone effect the film preparation on the defensive side of the ball? Are we still going to see linebackers recognizing the offensive plays and lining players up to be in the right spot or is Goodwin's simpler game plan to get set faster going to effect play recognition?

Unfortunately Tre Lamar does not fit into the category of "more athletic linebackers".
That is the reason he did not make it in the NFL.
He was however an extremely smart LB that I'm sure spent a great deal of time analyzing film and learning tendencies.

Tre was a hard hitting linebacker and yes very smart. He used his front 4 to be more productive but had he'd stayed one more season he would be playing in the NFL. He needed to drop weight to be a little faster if he could have gotten his 40 time down around 4.6, he would of had the success of Stephon Anthony more than likely.

I think there should be some good leadership from this group of LBs. Doesn't hurt to have the DLine we have so that can only help with any transitions.

Yeah our D line should help our defense tremendously this year but are we going to get the size up front like we have been to stay competitive is the question
