David Pollack interview…… Lots of Clemson

Jun 11, 2021, 1:55 PM

I like that Georgia people are underestimating DJ and our offense. They think DJ is not very athletic. They don’t realize that he was playing injured, which is why the coaches didn’t run him very much and why he was tentative as a runner.

I’m a Pollack fan. He shoots pretty straight especially for ESPN. And I can’t remember being more excited about a Game #1 to see how the coaches game plan and which players emerge. This is not a game where the team that leaves their top young talent on the bench will win. Go Tigers!

I'm honestly curious where people are getting the idea that DJ is going to be a major threat running the ball like Watson in 2015 or Lawrence against Ohio State in 2019. DJ's 40 time is closer to Tom Brady than it is to Trevor Lawrence. He'll be valuable in short yardage scenarios, but unless he gets a wide open lane against an athletically limited defense (see BC) he's not going to be that kind of player.

DJ will run the ball some, probably not as much as Watson ever did in a single season, but he has the feel of when to run to avoid trouble as well as the size to be used in short yardage situations. We don't know how much he will run, but defenses will have to account for the fact that he can and will run.

I don’t think he’ll be the threat that Watson or Trevor were but I think he could be effective the way Tajh Boyd was. I think he’ll be very effective in short yardage and goal line situations. Also, the way the RPO works is like running the option. The quarterback doesn’t have to run a lot just enough to keep the defense honest and off-balance.

More like Tajh when he runs but with more power. He only needs to move the chains.

Tajh wasn’t a speedster either and he was very good at making things happen with his feet. Especially short yardage.

Given our QB depth chart I'd be in favor of not calling any runs for DJ, at least until November.

No reason to expose him to extra hits.

Then that will make it much harder to beat Georgia.

I think the Georgia coaching staff has a good idea how versatile our QB is.

One thing we all make a mistake of and me included is no-one pays attention to the true freshman or second year guys that they haven’t seen and I promise GA will see a guy like Shipley or Ajou and they’ll be like D@mn who is this guy? We will surprise them with some offensive pieces.

You are mistaken if you think DJ can’t run...lol he is an effective runner & much faster than Tajh ever was......lol

Have you watch film on DJ, remember he was a little heavy in high school but he has leaned up & his body has caught up. DJ’s speed would be close to Deshauns at top speed.

DJ played the top level football in the country at Bosco and threw for 10,496 yards in his high school career and had 127 career touchdowns against just 11 interceptions … completed 585-of-871 passes for a 66 percent completion mark … averaged 18 yards per completion … also rushed for 1,103 yards and 18 touchdowns in his career, a 6.1 yard-per-carry average …

This is a sample video, DJ can run the ball very well.

The one game DJ couldn't run in, we lost. We coached him not to run vs ND, and it may have ultimately been the right call. Yet he still broke Trevor's single-game passing yardage record of 300+.

DJ is legitimately elite, and his ability to run is an absolute x-factor.

My concern is the lack of depth behind him being another reason for the coaches to discourage him from running, particularly against UGA.

A healthy DJ, though, will definitely have opportunities to run, including against UGA. I wouldn't be surprised to see more designed QB runs than scrambles to start the season, but he may end up being an upgrade to even the #1 draft pick he's replacing. Crazy to think about, but his ceiling really is that high.

my guess would be not expose him to injury without a solid backup

You mean after the Georgia game until the ACCCG and the playoffs. We will need him to run to execute our offense against Georgia.
