Something else has gone wild here in cootlumbia, and that's the coot radio talking sports. Some of those hosts have been talking crap about Clemson and FSU wanting to move to the SEC, and how it wasn't possible with the TV rights deal they were happy to sign when they signed it. The thing is with them, they are scared chitless of Clemson and FSU coming to the SEC bc that would put them a higher number down the line of being one of the absolutely worst teams in the SEC. You could hear it in the way they were talking about it, and another thing I believe they are worried about is, they won't have they are a SEC team over Clemson in a the she she ACC conference with their SEC players that seems to have never made them any better. Hearing the way they were talking makes me to want that move to happen more than I ever have!!!!

South Carolina beat Clemson last year. I don't think they are scared of anything. The program is on it's way up for sure.

Yeah you are right. You coots beat us last year but how? Oh yeah our QB gave you 21 points and you still only won by 1. You had your one year now we will start another streak of 7 or 8 wins in a row.

Our schedule has been more than half of their arguments against Clemson for years. If we join that conference that’ll be gone…..not to mention that even a blind man can see we’ll be much more successful than they have or probably will ever be within the sec.

Clemson will end up in the SEC or BiG? What percentage SEC? What percentage BiG? What's the percentage chance we get left out of one of the big two? How soon do you think this could happen in terms of months regarding announcement? How soon to actually be playing?

Re: David, in your gut feeling, Do you think

May 16, 2023, 4:14 PM

He addressed that in the video. Maybe enough LAX programs already in SEC plus Clemson and UNC to qualify for NCAA tourney should SEC start to sponsor.

Men’s Soccer….USuCk and UK have it. If UNC and UVa end up in SEC along with Clemson, that would be 5. FSU doesn’t help.

B1G sponsors all of Clemson’s current sports.

Re: David, in your gut feeling, Do you think

It was more to his point about "if" Clemson had to make its own way for a short amount of time and how that would impact those programs.......he seemed to think that we could. But what would the financial impact be on those two sports??

I kinda like the idea of Big 10.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Personally, the road trips in the Big 10 would suck.

May 16, 2023, 8:00 PM

Don’t get me wrong, LA with USC and ofcourse the matchups with Ohio St Michigan and Penn St would be awesome and maybe a trip to Wisconsin but everyone else is a hard pass for me.

The SEC (outside of Missouri) would be so much fun. I hate the dawgs but their stadium is awesome and that’s a rivalry that should be renewed. Auburn, heck yeah. The Swamp, I’ve only been to a spring game but heck yeah. Even Vanderbilt, heck Nashville is a lot of fun plus a game in the fall might mean a great weekend to pair with the leaves changing. Knoxville (Neyland) is my favorite stadium outside Death Valley. My best friend moved to and lives in Lexington . I would LOVE to go to Texas A&M. I didn’t make it there when we played them a few years ago with Kelly Bryant.

Again, Missouri I have no interest in but I can’t think of another stadium I wouldn’t want to visit every couple of years. (I can only afford probably 2 road trips) so that’s probably visiting every team what like every 10 years?

So for someone who lives in the Charleston area I’m ready for some better teams than the ACC has to offer.

*last years visit to Notre Dame (while the game sucked) the stadium was awesome. Couldn’t help but think “man, I want to be in a conference that cares about football”.

The only good stadiums in the ACC are Florida St and VTech. So bring on the Hokies to the SEC. (VTech is another great leaf viewing trip).
*BC was cool to visit once. Horrible stadium but hey Boston was awesome. I’ll probably never make the trip again though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My two road trips this year are Duke and Usuck.

May 16, 2023, 8:05 PM

Duke… yawn. I know they’ll be excited but half the crowd will still be wearing Orange. Can’t wait to see the Tigers though. Excited to see how Riley does. Last time I went to Duke it was pathetic. Said I’d never go back.

Columbia… whew. The armpit of the south but I can’t wait for Williams Brice. It does get very loud. They’ll be crowing for the first quarter and then hopefully we put them out to the pasture!

May 16, 2023, 5:56 PM [ in reply to Re: David, in your gut feeling, Do you think ]

Better be a move to the SEC, or stay put in the ACC. The Big 10 would be a bone head move for Clemson!

I would hate to see us leave the ACC, but if that is what it takes, make the move!
Our schedule would trade Wake and NC State for Vandy and Auburn. We have plenty of natural rivals in the SEC, just like the ACC. Playing Florida, Ole Miss, Miss State, Arkansas, and others would be interesting. Of course, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, and Georgia would become regular season games again, like USC.

Playing a Big 10 schedule would stink. Minnesota, Maryland, Rutgers, Northwestern, etc. would not be much to get excited about!

Go Tigers, Beat Dook!

Re: David, in your gut feeling, Do you think

Unfortunately, it's not about rivalries. It's about dollars & who has a spot.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Rivalries bring in the money $$$. Josh Pate talks about it.

May 16, 2023, 8:10 PM

Also the SEC has “spots”. Lol, they can’t sit back and let the Big 10 get Oregon, & Notre Dame and than Clemson and Florida St. No wayyy… They’re not letting the Big 10 blow up to 20 or 24 and just sit there. Nope.

Look we’re not staying in the ACC. So we’re going somewhere.

I don’t understand why certain people believe the SEC wouldn’t want us. We (Clemson, Florida St, Oregon & Notre Dame) are the most attractive schools. If you want the Big 10 just explain why but don’t think for a second the SEC wouldn’t want us.

Re: David, in your gut feeling, Do you think

May 16, 2023, 9:09 PM [ in reply to Re: David, in your gut feeling, Do you think ]

Clemson in particular can’t just say publicly that the SEC is our preference. There is a lot of good via a B1G affiliation.

We very much need whatever negotiating leverage that we can get; this is accomplished by reminding both the B1G and SEC that we aligned very well with each conference, and that the conference geographical footprint is not an issue because we easily sell out all of our conference FB games by way of Clemson fans by themselves.

The above is completely true. Only the greater Clemson metropolitan area Chamber of Commerce would be unhappy (likely reduction in hotel / motel business during home FB game weekends. OK, there would also be some drop off in restaurant business.

The proximity of away game candidates will have to be but a minor consideration. Proximity of SEC road game trips is much more favorable for most Clemson fans, but sometimes we forget that the Clemson alum presence is much broader / nationwide ow than it was decades ago. It might be that the far-flung Clemson alums who are not already IPTAY members have more disposable income on average than those who made their careers in SC, NC, or GA.

In other words, any impact to IPTAY contributions from legacy fans who would be less inclined to give generously might be significantly offset by new contributions from far-flung Clemson people who are super excited at the prospect of seeing our FB team playing in MI, OH, IN, central PA, NJ, DC area, etc.

You bring up a very good point relative to national giving. In fact, the Major Gifts department at Clemson is adding a staff member in the mid-west and one on the west coast for that exact reason.

May 17, 2023, 3:08 AM [ in reply to Re: David, in your gut feeling, Do you think ]

Not so sure about that as far as local biz. The SEC schools travel well. Also, we’re only talking about a couple thousand to ticket allotment for visiting schools. Games will still be sold out and Clemson doesn’t look like a town that can handle much more traffic than it’s already getting on gamedays already.

The deals for most of these teams are done, you’ve got Louisville & maybe GT still trying to nail down a deal. When their deals are done the announcements will come out.

The ACC is going to want to wait until they have another plan in place before it’s announced or otherwise they might be done for good.

I’m sure that a settlement between the teams leaving & the conference are taking place. This will cost Clemson in the short term.

Re: TNET: ACC Meetings off to a wild start

Isn't there something that if so many schools left the ACC at once, any deals that were made like the TV rights would die on the vine?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: ACC Meetings off to a wild start

May 17, 2023, 1:54 AM

I read the Grant of Rights a few months ago, and IIRC... If a bunch of schools (say 8) bolt the ACC, the remaining schools have 1 year to sign up new teams in order to keep the ACC alive (and therefore get the departed schools' new TV money). It would be a slam dunk for the ACC to sign up a bunch of little schools like UConn, ECU & Coastal Carolina.

"Hey UConn... Wanna join the ACC? If you do, you'll get tens of millions of dollars every year because the schools that just left the ACC are still bound by the Grant of Rights."

My interpretation...

May 16, 2023, 3:58 PM

Deals are in place for 9 schools (counting Notre Dame) to leave the ACC and join either the SEC, B1G, or Big XII. Louisville just finalized their deal (likely with the Big XII). SEC probably getting 4 teams total (likely 3-4 from ACC). B1G getting in the neighborhood of 4-6 teams total (2-4 from the ACC), and Big XII getting the rest. Deal is being made on how much those 9 schools will pay the other 6 (Syracuse, Duke, Wake, BC, Pitt, and GA Tech) to "buy out" GOR to prevent this from going to heavy litigation. If any of those 6 find a deal with the Big XII (like Louisville likely did), then they flip to the other side of the equation. Slight chance that Syracuse or BC can work something out with the B1G. I don't think the B1G wants Wake, Duke, or GA Tech at this point or they'd be part of the Gang of 7-8-9 already.

Notre Dame is going to the B1G almost without a doubt
FSU is going to the SEC almost without a doubt

Clemson, Miami, UNC, and UVA could go to either. At least 1 of them will go to the SEC and possibly all 4 plus NC State or VA Tech (but probably no more than 5 of those 6 total since FSU will likely be SEC)
NC State and VA Tech have a shot at the SEC, but Big XII is their alternative.

I'd lean towards SEC getting Clemson, NC State, and VA Tech with B1G getting Miami, UNC, and UVA. However - it could easily be that SEC gets Clemson, UNC, and UVA/Miami with B1G getting UVA/Miami and Big XII getting NC State and VA Tech.

My ideal, but probably unlikely:
FSU, Clemson, UNC, NC State, VA, Va Tech to SEC.
Notre Dame, Miami, Washington, Oregon, Stanford, BC to B1G
Louisville, GA Tech, Oregon State, Washington State, AZ, AZ State, Utah, and Colorado to Big XII

Duke, Syracuse, and Wake to Big East
Cal to the Mountain West (possibly Washington State and Oregon State as well instead of Big XII)

Re: My interpretation...

May 16, 2023, 6:05 PM [ in reply to My interpretation... ]

I guess you have Pitt going to the Big 10? GA Tech, probably goes back to the SEC, charter member.
Clemson goes to the SEC, and beyond that let the other schools work it out.
For once, I want to see Clemson put CLEMSON first, and not worry about our ACC brethren.

After the way the ACC has dumped on Clemson over the years, I wish the other schools no ill will, but this time I want to see Clemson act in our best interest..... Nuff said, to quote Charlie Pell....

Re: My interpretation...

May 17, 2023, 2:00 AM [ in reply to My interpretation... ]

I think Clemson & FSU would be more attractive to the B1G than to the SEC. Clemson & FSU would give the B1G new markets in the south.

Geographically and culturally, the SEC is a better fit, but it's about money.

B1G is doing it without ESPN which is smarter than the SEC. And good for their fans that so many games will be on over-the-air channels (FOX, NBC and CBS). With cord cutting accelerating, ESPN’s reach is shrinking. I think that’s Sankey’s one misstep. Right now, they have to share ABC slots with the ACC.

Worst case scenario

May 16, 2023, 10:01 PM

My worst case scenario is that the ACC will come to an agreement on revenue sharing that helps Clemson in the short term but ends up extending the grant of rights or making the exit fee even higher. That would be like everyone chaining themselves to a railing on the Titanic.

As I am trying to sort fact from reasonable guesses from pure click bait rantings I put more stock in David and Ira Schoeffel (warchant.com - the FSU equivalent to Tnet) than any other website.

Specifically, I think what we heard today was just political talk. "I'm gonna tell you everybody iw on the same page, buecause I'm not ready to tell you the ACC is dead man walking, yet. Be patient. I will."

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: ACC Meetings off to a wild start

May 16, 2023, 11:23 PM

I continue to believe the Big Ten is the best fit. Clemson will have great difficulty getting to the top of the SEC because every team with the exception of Vanderbilt will pose a challenge and some (Alabama, Georgia, LSU) perhaps an overwhelming one every year. Why won't Clemson be competitive? Because Coach Swinney, as long as he is in charge and assuming he sticks with what has worked for him before, will not use the portal to any significant extent. If you look at the Athletics article on portal moves and team ranking for the upcoming season, Clemson is #16 if I remember correctly. The paragraphs on each team listed portal grabs. Clemson was noteworthy for not having had any the Athletic thought worthy of mention. I am not sure if we had any, period, and to the best of my knowledge none where the arrival would quickly get plugged in to a starter role.

With either league, Swinney will have to leave his "all in the family" approach behind because he will be left behind if he continues to play by the old rules in a new setting. The Athletic is not optimistic about Clemson in the upcoming season, and I concur. South Carolina, Florida State, and Notre Dame will be major challenges, and there undoubtedly will be a surprise here or there as the season progresses. The time has come for Swinney to get outside of his comfort zone or I fear Clemson will be perennially in the middle in either new conference.
