David Hood said he heard Clemson is tied at the hip to ND

Jul 10, 2022, 12:20 AM

Wonder if that could mean the Grant Of Rights loses all validity? If the ACC gave Notre Dame a pass on it then why should they be allowed to deny any ACC team a pass on it?

I think that would be justification for voiding the GOR of all other ACC members.

The GOR for Notre Dame only applies to sports that ARE in the conference, NOT football. So essentially basketball. So no biggie for them.

As usual Swofford left looking like an idiot.

Yeah but if one school breaks it, regardless of what sports, it’s broken and the cracks are there

Not necessarily. If they pay the Exit fee and give up “revenues” from non-revenue sports until 2036 (pocket change in Notre Dame’s case) they haven’t broken the contract.

Jul 10, 2022, 3:19 PM [ in reply to Re: David Hood said he heard Clemson is tied at the hip to ND ]

The fact that ND was allowed to be a part of the ACC for FB so as to be able to play for the ACCC, so as to make them possibly eligible for the FBCG Play offs if they won the ACCCG, and they were not made to join the conference in order to reap the rewards of the conference, would seem to me to be a lawyers wet dream to have the GOR of the other teams overturned since ND was given special treatment w/o signing a GOR.

I inferred that if Notre Dame does anything other than join the ACC, it would force Clemson’s hand because there would be no credible path for ACC expansion at that point.

ND is supposed to be contractually bound to the ACC if the school decides to join a conference. How many years is ND bound and can the ACC sue the school if ND joins the B1G or SEC?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not buying it.

Jul 10, 2022, 6:40 AM

Notre Dame is a perfect fit for the Big Ten.

Clemson is a perfect fit for the SEC.

I just don’t see Clemson or Notre Dame having anything in common or any reason to make a pact.

Clemson and Miami signing a blood oath. That makes sense.

Re: Not buying it.

Jul 10, 2022, 7:09 AM

How are we perfect for the SEC when they don’t offer our best sport? We are National Champions in M Soccer yet the SEC does not support that sport. What about our new lacrosse team? Not an SEC sport? How about having decent fans who are not delusional? BIG meets every criteria better except goepraphy

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don’t ya think it’s possible the SEC could add sports?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That’s your argument against the SEC soccer?

Jul 11, 2022, 4:13 PM [ in reply to Re: Not buying it. ]

Boy you’re desperate. That is a desperation argument.

Soccer is important on this forum. A lot of Clemson graduates like soccer. But I guarantee you 90% of the Fanbase couldn’t care less.

How many people can fit in our soccer stadium? How does that compare to death Valley? That answers your question right there.

How much money does soccer generate for the athletic department?

And all that really matters let’s be honest is winning championships. We’ll make it to the NCAA tournament easier in the SEC.

It’s like the basketball argument. The SEC sucks in basketball. So the theory goes. Didn’t stop Florida from winning a couple of national championships. That didn’t stop Arkansas from winning some national championships. Doesn’t keep Kentucky from being one of the biggest most important basketball programs.

Number one sport at Clemson bigger than everything else combined as football. The SEC is the best conference in football and has been for a long time.

Look at the culture of our fans of our school everything about Clemson. SEC!

What’s our next most important sport? Baseball. SEC best baseball conference.

Golf is pretty important in Clemson Whitney say? They’re probably the best in golf right now.

We added gymnastics recently. SEC is best in gymnastics now. Not the West Coast schools.

Play track and Field is pretty important of it Clemson wouldn’t you? SEC is best in track and field.

We just spent millions to start a softball program. The SEC is best in softball.

The only two things the SEC is better at then where we are right now his soccer and lacrosse. And 90 something percent of the fans couldn’t care about either one of them. And that is about the dumbest reason in the world to not join the SEC when we’re a perfect fit. A perfect fit and all the things that matter! We are a natural SEC program. We should’ve joined the SEC years ago. It should’ve been Clemson rather than South Carolina.

Also Your argument is factually incorrect.

Jul 11, 2022, 4:18 PM [ in reply to Re: Not buying it. ]

Football is our best sport. 11th St. seasons winning 10 games. To do that in soccer would be like going to the I don’t know final eight in the soccer tournament 11 straight years. Have we done that?

We’ve been to six out of the last seven playoffs. How many times we’ve been to the final four in soccer over the last seven years? Three times?

Objectively and subjectively we’re better in football than soccer.

In terms of what matters to the University and the athletic department even thinking about comparing them is stupid.

Don’t get me wrong, I will miss being in the best soccer conference. But everything else depends on football. And football is our best and by far most important sport. Everything else combined times 10 is not as important as football.

Cheaper for ND to break GOR. If they break it, we would have more of a justification to leave. Reduced recruiting footprint, exposure, etc… not sure we could argue the $’s since we’d still be getting ND GOR $.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It means that ND and Clemson are the only two teams...

Jul 10, 2022, 7:59 AM

which matter anymore. All the traditionally relevant teams are collected in either the B1G or the SEC. If those conferences wanted to have a playoff independent of the NCAA and decide a National Champ they need both ND and Clemson involved.

ND is under contract with the ACC such that if ND joins a conference, until such and such a time, it will join the ACC. If ND is released from that agreement then the ACC has violated its agreement with all the teams in the conference making their agreements unfair. Clemson could be released.

BTW, from what I understand it takes 12 teams to vote to change the collective bargain.

FYI, I'm not a lawyer I don't sleep at the Holiday Inn and I really don't read that well.

I know one thing about contracts. The worst that happens is they are expensive if you violate them.

Maybe I know two things. If the SEC wants Clemson they can have Clemson. They'd just buy the ACC and pave over all they didn't need and call it a parking lot.

Are they trying to set up 2 super conferences instead of 4? Are they trying to set up a North vs South National Championship game? If they are, I want Clemson to be in the South because few people can travel long distances for games.

Is this alignment shaping up to be based on football since it draws the most revenue? The other school sports rely on revenue brought in by football, not basketball, baseball, soccer... Alot of people love all Clemson sports equally, but expansion is based on football tv money. Congress is even involved in this because of how much money is involved.

IMO, they are right now in the process of separating the big football revenue drawing teams from the rest.

Re: David Hood said he heard Clemson is tied at the hip to ND

ND has to resolve its agreements with the ACC on a couple fronts. For the GoR they would have to pay an exit compensation and lose their media rights revenue for their non football sports to 2036. I don’t think that would break open the GoR for all members to flee. Instead, it would be ND abiding by the terms of the contract. That amount of penalty maybe isn’t a deal breaker to join another conference. Second is the agreement to join the ACC in football if they want to bring that sport into a conference. I believe that also goes out into the 2030’s. I think that would be another payoff to end that agreement. So it’s complicated for ND because they likely would want to join another conference with all their sports if football goes into a conference. Meanwhile, comments from Swarbrick this past week says they will stay independent unless they are in jeopardy of losing access to the playoffs, plus other preferred scheduling conditions. Thus, I don’t see ND doing anything until the dust settles in a few years and they determine what kind of media deal they can get for football as an independent when the NBC deal expires in 2025.

Any decision is 100% a legal decision and you can be assured the attorneys for the ACC and its member schools have earned their fees the last few weeks.

I'd rather see us tied at the hip to UNC

Jul 10, 2022, 10:17 AM

and their team of lawyers than ND. If that group can worm UNC's way out of not being penalized for offering fake classes for players for decades, this GOR exit thing should be a cakewalk. Swofford probably tipped them off on where the double secret loophole is in the agreement. This is the crew we want to be working closely with.

Notre Dame isn't tied at the hip to anyone. They see themselves as special and everyone else is beneath them.
