Just because someone's upset with the results doesn't mean they don't pull for the Tigers. There's definitely no need for the insults.

The fact of the matter is Dabo set these super-high goals for us, and we failed miserably. We tried and failed and that's ok...but what frustrated me about Dabo is that he can't just say something is bad. Our losses to FSU and South Carolina were bad. We basically puked all over ourselves against South Carolina by making so many ridiculous mistakes, and we were just straight up pounded by Florida State.

That all sucks, but I guess what frustrates me is that two weeks after a loss Dabo will say something along the lines of "it's not so bad! We only lost twice!" or the dreadful "I think we beat them 5/10 times if we play them". I just want to see him stick to a narrative of "this isn't acceptable, we need to get better" rather than justify or try soften the importance of the losses.

No need for insults? you gotta be kidding!! You people come on here and all you do is gripe and complain over winning 10 games and losing 2 games. 2 games to top 10 opponents I might add. Then you rip Dabo constantly and You say I should not insult because I point out there is a very high likely hood that most of the people who gripe have never set one goal athletically in their lives yet they live vicariously through this team and all they want to do is gripe and complain because they did not win a National Championship thus making the yum yum couch sitting griping people champions!
Yes if all yo do is gripe I doubt that you are a fan of the team You are a fan of yourself trying to make your self feel good through the achievement of others.

Re: Dabo says we fell a "little" short....

Dec 26, 2013, 12:12 PM

Just to get the "never set one goal athletically in my life" thing out of the way, I played every sport I could as a kid. I obviously loved football, and basketball too even if I sucked at it. I was fortunate enough in my senior year to lead my division in TD receptions and made it on the Shriner's All-State team as a WR. So I've set and accomplished plenty of athletic goals...so let's let that be, ok?

Regarding the other parts of your posts, there's no doubt it feels much better to win 10 games than it does to win 7 or 8...but with the level of talent we have, playing in the ACC, 10 wins should be expected at this point.

Of course playing for a National Title is what I would have preferred, but that's not the main thing I'm upset about. These are my main gripes:

If we lost to FSU 31-21, and were in it for 3/4 quarters, it would have hurt but it would have been something I could have gotten over due to FSU's unbelievably loaded roster. Instead we fumbled on the first play and were totally out of the game physically and mentally five minutes into the 1st quarter. The week leading up to the game, Dabo and Tajh couldn't find enough cameras and reporters to talk to, which made it seem even worse because I felt like they concentrated on the spectacle of the game more than they prepared for the game itself. Then, after we were destroyed 51-7 (I don't count that last TD since it came with 30 seconds to go in the game), Dabo had the gall to say we'd win 5/10 games vs the Noles. Nationally, that makes us look like clowns. I was embarrassed to read that.

Florida State was a better team than us, plain and simple. It shouldn't been that big of a bloodbath, but they were better than us. South Carolina on the other hand, was not. They're a very good squad, but I felt like we had an advantage on them regarding talent, and for the most part I think I was correct. The main difference between our squads that game? Mentality. 6-effing-turnovers. I think only the Tajh fumble--which was still pretty bad--is the only one we could count as "forced". Other than that it was foolish WR passes, balls bouncing off a gunner's shoulder pads, a horrible fumble and horrible INTs.

I actually do really like Dabo, despite my criticisms of him. I don't think we should get rid of him. I think he's a great person and a very good coach too. However I think he:

1. Gets too wound up for big games, which causes our players to be tight mentally and not show up ready to play when it counts the most.

2. Tries to downplay the seriousness of losing to quality opponents. Last year we were 1/3 (Lost to FSU, South Carolina; beat LSU), and this year we're 1/3 again (FSU, SC; beat UGA) with an opportunity to go 2/4.

When we lose, I want to hear our coach say something along the lines of "it's unacceptable, we need to take a look at what we're doing wrong and fix it immediately. Clemson football is about championships and nothing else, blah blah blah", not "Well if we played them again we might win...I mean...we're a great team! We're so close!"

Of course it's nice to win ten games, but we're Clemson. Aren't we supposed to be focused on championships? Aren't we supposed to not lose to our rivals five years in a row? Relying on the "well we won 10 games!" thing is kind of like bragging about driving a Ferrari 125 mph at a race track but it has the power to do 200. It's nice, but we've stil got so much more unrealized potential, and that's what's frustrating. Not only that, but that Dabo at times seems OK with it.

Dec 26, 2013, 3:34 PM [ in reply to Re: Dabo says we fell a "little" short.... ]

I will take you at your word on your athletic accomplishments however if that is true you should have a little better perspective. One what Clemson has accomplished has not been easy. Second sometimes you are very focused on your goal you train well you prepare well and things still do not go as planned. So why does everyone rip Dabo most people in this world can not teach recruit or coach at the level that he does. But man people sure are quick to pile on and mainly over nothing. If you wanna talk football then talk football and put the blame where it belongs. It was not Dabo that turned it over 6 times. I think all the coaches do a great job but if you wanna talk about coaches talk about Morris and why He always goes strictly to Sammy Watkins in the big game and tries trick plays when their not needed. Most games even blow outs can turn on just a few plays and not sticking with a proven game plan cost Clemson in my opinion.
What I personally do not like is people ripping coaches and players when from what I see the coaches and the team give it all they have and looks to me like they are REALLY GOOD!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dabo says we fell a "little" short....

Dec 26, 2013, 4:21 PM

Well here's the thing...while Dabo didn't turn it over 6 times vs South Carolina, you could argue 4/6 turnovers were mental. Both punt returns were mental and so were both of Tajh's interceptions. The WR pass was genuinely terrible play calling and the fumble was just bad luck & a bunch of DL'men holding up our QB.

Mental mistakes are the responsibility of the coaching staff, and ultimately that falls on the shoulders of the head coach.

Do you really think FSU was that much better than us? I don't. But they came to play right off the bat, and we had our heads in the clouds. We weren't prepared for that game and yes, that again falls on Dabo's shoulders.

I do believe Dabo is a very good coach, and I do think he's probably in the top 150 or so of people in his profession (including NFL head coaches) in the entire world. I understand you're just sticking up for our coach, but he was also paid $2.5 million for this season alone. When you get that kind of cash, and you're coaching a top flight program, there's always going to be criticism. Heck, I'm originally from the Boston area and while I think Belichick is near-perfect, there are certainly areas I'd like to see him improve or relinquish some power (*cough*draft*cough*). So don't take this as me saying I dislike Dabo. I enjoy him, even if sometimes I don't like the whole song and dance.

Like many people, one of his greatest assets is also one of his greatest weaknesses. His passion for the players and the game is second to nobody...and that is what makes him such a great recruiter. However I think it also sometimes gets in his way when getting prepared for a big game. As I mentioned before, I think his passion gets him so wound up that it actually acts as a detractor, rather than help. However, I think Morris can do a lot to help this side of things. Speaking of which....

You mentioned we should put some of the blame of this on Morris. I absolutely do. I think Chad, while great and has done fantastic things for this program, has some areas that he really needs to work on. The most glaring of this is his play calling. I think Morris has one of the best offensive minds/systems in the nation, but his gameday play calling can be really suspect at times. He gets frustrated easily if things aren't working and often gets over-reliant on the pass. As you mentioned, he's also got an incurable itch for trick plays, which should only be run once or twice a year. Instead he likes to do that once or twice a game. I think this will improve the longer he's around though. It's only a matter of time.

However it did appear that his system this year was a lot more vanilla than years past. I'd really like to see the faster pace, motion, and wide-open offense we saw in 2011-2012. This year it seemed so much more conventional.

See I'm not as down on Dabo as you are. I think he does do a lot of things correctly, and while the ACC is down, his record isn't simply a product of our competition.

I think Dabo has done a magnificent job recruiting and Morris' system is fantastic, even if his playcalling needs improvement.

However, as I said before, I think Dabo has to do something about how we prepare for big games and how we come into the game mentally. Basically he needs to find a way to replicate our mentality for the LSU/UGA games.

Dec 27, 2013, 11:55 AM [ in reply to Re: Dabo says we fell a "little" short.... ]

you are prolly familiar with that 'quicksand' from the Replacements. That first fumble I think changed the whole game. It gave what should have been a shaken Freshmen quarterback confidence that he shouldnt have had and then our guys started feeling the 'Oh no.' And then try to do too much. I think a 31-21 game would have been realistic if that first fumble didnt happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: tmac... since you played high school ball,

Dec 27, 2013, 12:29 PM

It's definitely possible...but at one point during the second quarter, after we scored a TD, we got the ball back at 17-7 a couple of times and we did nothing with it. We actually had FSU deep in their own territory for a couple of possessions and had nice field position. But we just weren't there mentally.

I definitely believe in the theory that a heartbreaking turnover can take you out of the game. I think it happened in the FSU game, but it wasn't only because of that fumble.

Conversely, I think the only reason we lost the Orange Bowl in 2011 was due to the AE fumble which was brought back 99 yards before the half.

Deer Dabo, We will never get there until we build

Dec 26, 2013, 9:49 AM

a strong line on both sides of the ball and have a power running back to add to our defensive eye candy razzledazzle offensive scheme. When we play with the big boys, who are disciplined in their defensive lanes and pressure our QB, we can't fool them. So until we build a foundation that can consistently protect our QB and create running lanes for our backs, nothing will change. We will always come up "a little short."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Deer Dabo, We will never get there until we build

Dec 26, 2013, 9:58 AM

I agree with you partially. I agree 100% on the part of our lines. Actually, our defensive line was more than enough to make us a contender. I also think that our recruiting suggests that we won't have a lot to worry about in the future regarding the defensive line either. The weakness was almost purely in our offensive line, both in a lack of talent and lack of depth. This should be our #1 priority in the offseason. Something absolutely needs to be done.

However I disagree about needing a power back. Two years ago, we had AE--who was far from being considered a power back--and he's proven to be a solid back in the NFL so far. So I don't think a power back is necessary. Our stable of running backs this past year should have been enough too. Our group next year should be especially capable if Tyshon Dye comes back from his injury full strength. We don't need a power back as much as we need the push up front.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. Our RB's are good enough if they are supported by

Dec 26, 2013, 10:08 AM

a good line. The power back would take us to the next level. When you can add a yard or two to each running play, and can break tackles for a big run, it makes a difference. The defense must respect that back, which opens up creases for the pass.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Agree. Our RB's are good enough if they are supported by

Dec 26, 2013, 12:18 PM

For sure. I believe our next backs certainly have that potential. I think both Brooks and Dye could definitely fit a role similar to that of James Davis, which I think would be big time for us.

But, as you mentioned, the real need comes from that push up front.

what if we gave the chicken the choice, "fried or baked?"

Dec 26, 2013, 10:21 AM

and the chicken chose fried.

i might have a hankerin' for fried chicken so i'd tend to agree with said chicken.

Pretty sure the chicken fans love Dabo's eternal optimism, and especially his reticence to admit shortcomings in his program. They know his "keep the faith" attitude is partly the reason for the gifts that keep on giving each November.

Get a grip dude, we have 1 national title in our history….

Dec 26, 2013, 2:46 PM

to think we are going to easily be able to get in the national title game every year is completely moronic.

We lost 2 games to top 10 teams

Dec 26, 2013, 3:42 PM

My goodness, we have got to be the most butthurt and unappreciative fanbase out there. Do you know how hard it is to win 10 games in ANY conference?

It must be pretty dang hard. I know we haven't done it but a couple of times in the last 20 years. But if it was easy, all coaches would be doing it. And the price of coaches would be going down and not up. We got lucky, we got a 10 win coach on sale.

Really a little short? No division title ! No conference title ! 5th straight loss to Scar! Ranked outside the top 10! Dabo you sound like Bowden. Not even close but only close in Dabo spin land!
