Dabo is playing the long game.

Jan 30, 2022, 9:19 AM

In the middle of madness there will be one program left that’s true focus is academics and building men. While everyone is busy trying to pick scraps out of the portal our recruiting will elevate and we’ll get more high school talent. Trust the process. Trust Dabo.

I hope it works out that way. 2023 class will be critical towards our continued success.

Re: Dabo is playing the long game.

The short game is crucial to Dabo and Clemson moving ahead. By short game I define it as 2022 on field performance. That is probably the most critical thing. 2023 recruits are watching to see if Clemson is still Clemson. An off year on the tail of the staff turnover and the long game will be much compromised.

As long as we can recruit well that sounds great. Next year's recruiting class will tell us a lot.

100% agree. He has built a solid program with a solid foundation and will continue to do so.

Personally, I don’t feel the need to worry about shortsighted decisions made by teenagers that will never play play Clemson University.

Lots of schools can play the long game. It's playing the short game with the long game that's made this program successful.

Totally agree. David Shaw plays the long game. He's as outspoken and as close as Dabo is in regards to the portal and NIL. They had a good class this year and I'd love to see them really excel. One of the good guys but has been criticized and taken out of context as much as Dabo.

No one "abandoned us" due to 10-3.

Jan 30, 2022, 3:24 PM

We had 4 guys change their mind when the coach they wanted to play for decided to take a dream job somewhere else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have said all along that Clemson needs to be

Jan 30, 2022, 1:28 PM

the alternative to the portal crap. Continue focus in high school kids and development, taking only select portal guys to fill immediate needs(1-2 per yeat maybe, if any).

Or, and I’m just spitballing here, we do whatever is necessary to stay one of the top 5 programs in the country.

kbtiger, I agree with you, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, Tom Brady complemented been big ben this week and said big Ben took a different path but still had a hell of a career.

Time will tell, but I would not be surprised if a few years from now we look back and find that Clemson is still consistently in the top five, and we’re there because we take a different path, because of the type of guys we target and how we manage our roster.

Maybe targeting more guys like Kobe Pace and fewer guys like Demarcus Bowman. But, even this last statement has not withstood the test of time. Time will tell.

I like our chances with Dabo running the show.

I heard Harvard and Yale really cared about academics. How has that worked out on the football field?

Re: Dabo is playing the long game.

Jan 30, 2022, 1:35 PM

The game is about 2 things and two things only.
1. Money now. NIL
2. Money in future. Ability to send me to NFL

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we don't come up with some way...

Jan 30, 2022, 1:48 PM

To at least appear that we have something of relevance to offer in the way of NIL, as soon as they sign, then recruiting will take a noticeable dip.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If we don't come up with some way...

Jan 30, 2022, 2:04 PM

Last summer Dabo mentioned that the department already had an NIL component and assistance resources. It sounds like they've anticipated this, and got an early start. What we won't see from our program though, most likely, is getting into bidding wars over recruits, and I am absolutely fine with that. I don't believe that is the path to the consistent on field success necessary to win championships in this sport.

Re: If we don't come up with some way...

Jan 30, 2022, 5:37 PM

I bieve you are wrong. The college game is now identical in concept to the NFL. Money talks and Bravo Sierra walks. It is now that simple.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If we don't come up with some way...

Jan 30, 2022, 5:53 PM

I'm totally okay with kids earning money while in college playing sports. In football though there are just too many positions and moving parts and the need for cohesion at all times to believe that you can buy a bunch of kids fresh out of high school to deliver the goods.

Admittedly though, QBs are a wild card. The right QB is a third of a winning program, so NIL and "free agency" style at that position could upset some of the more natural flow of things.

Re: Dabo is playing the long game.

Jan 30, 2022, 2:46 PM

Yes; trust Almighty Dabo.

Are you honestly still stuck on building students & men?

It’s not the focus; it’s never been the focus.

It’s a business with tax-exempt status. Like religion.

It was a convenient recruiting pitch to build students & men.

Clemson lost that battle.

Adapt or die.

Re: Clueless...***

Jan 30, 2022, 3:00 PM

Do you think Dabo will still be here in 5 years with his current philosophies of building students and men if we only win 6 games a year? Do you think he would still be here if he hadn’t won big?

It’s all about winning and if you think otherwise you are very naive. Now that the bar has been raised Dabo is going to have to keep winning big or the other aspects of his program will just be ignored.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo is not going anywhere. Clemson is home. Dabo will use

Jan 30, 2022, 3:17 PM

the NIL to the best of our ability.

Shoot, just look how easy it was over this weekend to show these young men how great a place our University is and how great our football program has been for years . We have made it to the final CFP game five times, winning two games against Bama. The 2019 CFP Title game was the largest Bama lose as Clemson beat Bama 44-16.

about the maturation of the OLs and the QB... If that happens favorably, we'll be playing for a another National Championship. Please mark this and get back with me.
