I agree with you Neal in NC bc, I've never made a $100k a year, and a $300k salary would have topped any dreams I've ever had of getting paid, WOW!!!

Thad Turnipseed is underpaid at $250k.

Feb 7, 2020, 12:42 AM

I wonder what the deal is there. He’s made a huge difference.

If he’s happy and it’s by mutual agreement to spread the wealth around or something like that, that’s great. But I sure wouldn’t want him to leave.

Has anybody done the math?

Feb 6, 2020, 10:04 AM

We lose the $1 million we were paying Jeff and spread it around so we are paying more this coming year but I don't think it is a lot more overall. (I guess we lost Brad's salary too.

I know the salaries are crazy, but this is the market in sports. so, with that, I font begrudge our coaching staff their salaries as they are successful doing what they do and it's done in a way we will never have to be ashamed of.

Ithaca, I'm not trying to bust your balls, I'm just reminding you that spelling mistakes bc of the tight space the keys on a keyboard are easy to make, we all make them. With a one year white level donation that averages about $2.50 a month will allow you to go back and edit or delete any post that you have posted. I don't begrudge our coaching staff salaries either, but it is getting excessive IMO, but I wouldn't turn it down saying oh no that's to much....

I think we can all agree with the correlation , win at a high level = pay at a high level .

Considering Dabo's superbly run and highly achieving program I would say that this payscale is commensurate .

Have you seen this OL coming in, this will be the BEST OL group we’ve ever had by a lot with more monsters coming in next year. For many years I just wanted us to have some really mean guys up front. We have two deep better than any line we have had & don’t look now but the Defensive line is looking NFLish this year and next to go along with what we had.

Best TE’s Rb’s and WR’s too along with Defensive backs Safeties and monster LB’s and kickers!

It’s going to get scary for our opponents, it’s going to be fun to spank ND & those puppies up the road!!

Best OL coach period

How many games did Tony and Jeff lose since they took over. Results matter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Results matter . . .

Feb 6, 2020, 2:28 PM

but results are more than just bottom line unless one thinks that Elliot and Scott were playing with average athletes but were scheming 4-D chess and outsmarting everyone. We generally out-athlete and don't adjust adequately when the chips are really down. CTE can improve a lot in this area. Too vanilla, too predictable, doesn't account for enough stuff when the plan A goes south.

Doesn't necessarily mean that raises are out of order, but the constructive criticism stands on it's merits, and those merits are weighty.

Does this raise include a requirement to use TE's now??

Feb 6, 2020, 10:53 AM

Far too much talent at that position not to use them in the middle of the field to keep defense from focusing so much on the guys at the edges of the field. To only use the TE position as blockers & decoys is not going to be an effective use of a big time weapon we can now deploy.

Feb 6, 2020, 10:57 AM

I picked the wrong career I guess. Their increases are more than most people will ever make. I haven’t had a pay increase in more than 5 years and I own the company...of course my company doesn’t provide entertainment, just healthcare.

We spend a fortune on entertainment for some reason. Movies, tv, sports, etc. Was talking recently about how much of prime time tv is about first responders...the people pretending to do the job make exponentially more than the ones actually doing the job.

Strange world we live in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is remarkable how much money is generated..

Feb 6, 2020, 12:03 PM

through TV now...I did a quick search on Bowden in 2000 and he got an extension that paid him a grand total of $825,000, which was well above the average at the time and coordinators did good to make $250,000. Many assistants at D-1 schools around that time made less than $100k.

The numbers look crazy, but you are looking at one of the top programs in the country that is paying its coaches like they are the top talent in the industry.

If you looked at the numbers for even an average power 5 program, the pay and the job security would not be there.

and when you move down, you see people starting out that are working as unpaid assistants.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the conservative in me is cringing

Feb 6, 2020, 11:48 AM

i get the salaries to begin with (i guess).
I get going up.
i get Tony getting a nice bump. for taking it all. but 60%???
I get people increasing their job scope and getting a big bump. aka - Todd B./ Grisham.
i get raising salary for people by some sort of cost of living. 3-5% is normal.

the increase percentages are huge compared to the world.

I am not complaining - just a bit shocked at the percentage increases.

clearly, part of the success has been keeping the coaches happy and in place - but wow.

If you look at the dollars that football brings in at Clemson, these numbers might be justified. Sports salaries are just totally out of control all over the globe.

The article says coach V had a contract for 5 years for 11.6 million which equals 2.3+ per year. Why would coach V take a cut to 2.2 million for another year? With the job he's done, shouldn't he get more?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m so happy for these guys! They are great at their jobs and they are worth it.

Feb 6, 2020, 8:51 PM

With that said, these salaries in sports today aren’t sustainable. They might continue to go up for the foreseeable future, but at some point I think we will see a drop.

Football on this level isn’t going to stay as popular as long as the number of kids playing youth football continues to decline. Attendance numbers will eventually start to struggle as ticket prices keep going up. Less interest among kids + rising ticket prices + all games on TV = revenues go down.

Sure, things are fine at Clemson at the moment because we’re a great program and our fan base is football crazy, but you’re already starting to see declining attendance at many other places and it will affect us one way or the other at some point too (although I expect it will hit us last).
