Dabo- tampering- portal

So Dabo has been highly successful for years doing recruiting his way. His way being slow and methodical with no rush. The results speak for themselves with a decade of 10 win seasons, 6 ACC Championships and 2 Nattys.
The transfer portal doesn’t lend itself to this approach, there’s just not as much time. This explains, IMHO why we haven’t been lighting up the portal.
Dabo mentioned tampering a few weeks ago. My read was he’s referring to teams actively recruiting players currently on another teams roster. What may be happening in these cases is a public show of 1- player announces he’s entering the portal. 2- player is looking hard at XYZ University. 3- player commits to XYZU. But he was already going there before step 1.
Again, in this case assuming Dabo isn’t tampering, we’re behind in the new game of transferring players. I’m not arguing for tampering, I’m just observing what seems to be the new reality.
How do you guys think we proceed with getting top players out of the portal?

And develop them into champions. And the ones who want to quit or take calls from other schools will leave. It’s not anything new. Florida has recruited our active roster harder than the hs kids in their state since CJ was a player here. Dabo won’t tamper because it’s dirty, and isn’t good for anyone.

I wish I could answer that question. Dabo is old school and his word means something. I think he feels it to be the perfect storm to have to pick someone out of the portal. He recruits players and I just do not believe it is in his nature to get a guy to commit and then go and pick someone up from the portal to take his spot. I don’t know I believe there is a lot of factors to be considered when going that route but Dabo feels established and may look at the portal as a band aid. When you mention top tier players in the portal then I would say money would be the determining factor on if you land someone of that caliber.

Very classy way to avoid using Caleb Williams name when describing one key aspect of the portal's appeal ... it's the college player's way of being a free agent, with highest bidder getting the portal hero.
Caleb Williams looks like "Exhibit A" in this scenario.
You're a better man than me for keeping Caleb Williams' name (aka "Exhibit A") out of your post.

We have been lighting up the portal, but it's been with our players leaving bc they can't play ahead of someone better than they are. The NCAA created this monster called a transfer portal where these guy can just quit, and go somewhere else without a thing that teaches commitment. When they have to go out in the real world, they won't be able to hold a job bc when they were in their most influential time in their life, they were taught they can just quit, and move on!!! What a rude awakening there will be when they have to have a reference from the last place they quit on!!!

Enough. Kid wants to change school and maybe play more, relax and bid him good luck.you don’t need to extrapolate their inability to hold down a job in the future.

Good for him to let him know. Riley acts and sounds like a complete ######. Horrible if he tampered with Caleb. Brent will probably be better off. That said, I agree with poster above. Ours going to Minnesota great example of quality kid that just wasn't going to play here.
Since we're on that subject, the 4* corner from albarn (Reed) entered today. Has 2, maybe 3 years eligibility with covid yr. Nick should know the fella well. Wouldn't be a bad pickup. If he's a good kid, should we go after? Going to be thin on corner experience this year, right?

Clemgalalways - i think if any kids that were targets coming out of H.S. that we missed on "initially" are interested - we should go after 100%.
Dabo might see it different and if so(I amd down with however he see's it) but "I would hope" that let's say a under recruited kid that is playing at a G5 school or FCS level entered the portal and basically built their body into a P5 type body and they could help us "immediately" in a position of need - we would go after them.
Let's take OL for a random, non-specific example: "a kid from Georgia Southern or SC State has become dominant at their level; but want to play major college ball" I think depending on the kid and visit with the players family - we give that kid a shot. "If and only if we do not already have enough competitive depth"!

1TNTiger - good question!
I created a post about 2 months ago about Tampering "in general"; but this is a better question than mine.
Dabo is old-school as said already. His word means something and the commitment he makes in a player's living room or home somewhere or coaches office means something! It's a 4 to 5-year commitment.
Taking someone out of the portal and placing them ahead of a kid he had since a freshman would be like adopting a kid and placing them ahead of your other adopted kids that were there 1st. It's just not right I think in Dabo's mind; though to be clear he has stated he is going to use the portal.
You have to be careful with the portal as you must ask yourself: "Are they going to quit on us too"? Will there be an expectation of guaranteed minutes or do they understand we play the player that gives us the best chance to win, Period? If they get p'd off will they just end up leaving because they didn't have it their way?
All of that plus keeping in mind about the players who have been in the system who are going to be looking at the competition they didn't know they would have to face. Which don't get me wrong: I think in life "unexpected challenges come at you all the time"! Are you going to fight or run from it?

It's almost guaranteed that when big-time players enter the portal, they know where they are going, regardless of the time frame between entering and committing elsewhere. Whether the recipient team has been actively recruiting the player while he is a member of the other team or not, they have at a minimum assured the player he will be accepted if he transfers. I don't see Dabo playing this game. I hope he continues to take the high road, even if missing out on some difference makers is a consequence.

I wonder if Clemson has insight on some players from Alabama or Georgia that plan on transferring after the game tonight. Maybe a DE, OL. Since they have been so selective in pursuing current portal players, I wonder if they know of some future transfers that may be available.
Probably Not, but I do know that each team will have their own attrition post season.
