CU Dean wants to move our entire Engineerng school to Gvill

Clemson University’s entire engineering college would be moving to Greenville, if the college's dean gets his wish.

In giving a report to the Clemson Board of Trustees’ Educational Policy Committee on Thursday, Anand Gramopadhye said the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences needs an additional 200,000 square feet of research space.

The goal he outlined in his report was to add that much in facilities on the main campus by 2026.

But when asked by Trustee Bill Smith what he would like to have if he could have just one wish for the college, Gramopadhye said he would like to move the whole college to the campus surrounding Clemson’s International Center for Automotive Research, off Interstate 85 in Greenville.

“If we don’t claim it, somebody else will,” he said.

Greenville’s growth and high number of engineering jobs per capita make it the ideal place for Clemson’s engineering program, he said.

Dang - why didn't they do that 40+ years ago? I lived in Greenville and could have commuted.

JK - going to CLEMSON and that beautiful campus was a life-changing event. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

That said, the idea sounds promising for job growth.

Go right ahead and move the RESEARCH and graduate level engineering to Greenville no problem. Those programs add little to the campus experience. But all undergraduates need to experience the core campus first.

200,000 s.f. of research space? 200,000 s.f.? Jesus! These pinheads are out of their minds! You can build decent house for $100 per s.f. Research space, the way that Clemson spends money, would come in at $750 - $1000 per s.f. So ... just a mere $150 million! At least! Oh ... the humanity!

Try not to take the Lord's name in vane, please.

I'm not threatening to chop your head off like a Muslim, just letting you know it's not cool at all. You can make your point without it...and well, the rest of it is between you and God when you die.

No. Just No... If these pin heads need more space then there is plenty of land outside of main campus in Pickens County on which they can build a facility. What makes Clemson special is its "small town" feel. If someone wants to teach or attend a city engineering school then go to GA Tech or NC State - Clemson's flagship college must remain in Clemson.
