shortages in "whatever" or ...we aren't opening today bc......we only clean your hotel rooms every 2 or 3 days... everything now is due to covid, places have figured out, they can make just as much money by not having as many employees as before, or not opening with less employees etc.....why is their shortages in paint/building products....heck no one works anymore so what the heck is going on....Lets go brandon... its all a load of crap....COVID isn't going anywhere, its here to stay thanks to a certain country who let it out...... so we might as well get used to it and start getting on with it.

2020…wasn’t that when the government started shelling out more money than employers could afford to pay in salaries. Lots of folks quit and never came back. I’m down more than 5 percent at least at my job. No one applies. Used to have choices but not anymore. 3.5 percent is not the actual number you have to actually research that number to get the truth in regards to people that actually are looking for work. Should be 0 percent with all the openings I see around my town. Govt taking care of them and if they feel good trying to survive on that small change then my employer wouldn’t hire them anyways. Sound lazy with no drive to make more. Government created this mess.

This is true. The job participation rate has declined drastically. What the unemployment numbers went down because the lockdowns ended. Millions went on unemployment due to government mandated lockdowns. Look at the participation rate and unemployment before the lockdowns.

Stupidest post of the day. Do you hire anyone. People don’t want to work. Everywhere you look there are now hiring signs. If you want a better job make yourself more valuable. Typical liberal response. Where poor people keep voting for the people that keep them poor. 3.5 percent. Got to be 6 plus where I live. People can’t even stay open normal hours seeing they can’t fill the hours required.

The more the years go by the more the USA is looking like a developing country. Increasing homelessness, shrinking middle class / historic income gap, crumbling infrastructure, out-of-control medical prices, and corrupt politicians unwilling to even give up insider trading.

Looking more and more like some of the Latin American countries I've lived in with less affordable healthcare.

My mom started building a house just before all this hit. They are still going after 2 years because things are hard to get and the prices are so bad. I’m not sure how much the price per sq foot has gone up since they started. One of those financial questions that is really none of my business seeing they are paying for it. Just hearing them complain on the delay of getting in materials and current cost I’m figuring it is not good. If you need any cabinetry work done in the Greenville area look up Allen’s Cabinet Shop. He does fantastic custom cabinets and wine cellars. About anything you would need made of wood.

My sister is a nurse. So many of her friends have had mental break downs dealing with the relentless onslaught of covid patients.

They have been surged for so long that they cant handle it anymore. She's had to hold the phone for an anti-vaxxer as they call their friends for the last time to tell them to get the vaccine and literally died while speaking to them. She's had to call suicide hotlines and the police to help her colleagues that were at their breaking point.

And people want to complain bc they cant get the cut of steak they want.

Quality reading comprehension.

Also with some quick research on bird flu: As of May 23, the WHO had reports of 218 human confirmed cases (including 124 deaths) of bird flu worldwide since 2003. Vietnam has had the most confirmed human cases (93) and deaths (42). Indonesia is second, with 42 confirmed human cases and 33 deaths, according to the WHO.

First Ayn Rand is a FICTION writer.

Next, the fiction is based around classical liberalism & objectivity but is very much counter to many ideas as well. It is inconsistent at best.

However, Rand was toxic to other non-Rand libertarians and claimed they cribbed all her ideas (which is an idiotic claim) which has a much deeper philosophical tradition.

Basically, because Rand was able to operate in "fiction" literature space, for focused - actual - policy development would never merge exactly and then she would say the policy folks stole and mangled her ideas. Basically akin George Lucas and Starwars claiming NASA stole his ideas on space travel.

Basically Rand was making "fantasy" policy and philosophy.

Finally, I generally don't like a lot of continental philosophy, but her takes on Kant are poor.

As a classical liberal (Locke) I hold the Marx/Engel Reader in higher regard than anything Rand cooted out.

He IS already the worst president in history. Totally legit 81 million votes and can't get 5 people to show up for anything involving him or his administration.

Why is hard to understand

that crowd size is a dumb way to guage how 150 million people will cast a vote? Going to a presidential rally or wearing a piece of clothing with the name of the highest ranking member of public office is for simple people. It's just ironic how "conservatives" are so into the federal government now.

technically that would be due to covid right?

The United States imports over $300 billion, every MONTH, from other countries. Mostly from China, Mexico, Central America, some from Canada, Taiwan, from all over the world. We do this, more and more year after year, decade after decade, because we can import a widget from China made in a sweat shop by some guy making $4 a day, and ship it to the US CHEAPER than we could make it in Greenwood. Been this way forever. We literally can't afford our own labor, or have the resources to domestically supply our demand.

So, covid? Well, most of the world shut down for a time, and most of our big trading partners we import (cheaper) goods from, shut down FAR more than we did. Our demand remained high, we kept on humming along better than most countries, BUT, the other countries we import goods from coundn't manufacture the amount to meet our "normal" demand. So stuff gets scarce. Also, the vast majority of Americans have had covid in the past month or so. If everyone missed only 5 days of work, that's a LOT of down time, even with no restrictions. Then take a place like China that shuts down billions in manufacturing for a dozen cases, and you have a mess. A SHORTAGE.

We import so much and have a massive trade deficit because we can't afford to make an ever-growing list of products in the US, and import from more and more cheap-labor countries. So you have domestic issues with sick people at levels never before seen, happening within a 4 week period, and many have to miss more than 5 days, some less. But it collectively adds up to a shutdown from the virus equivilent to a governemnt shutdown. Less stuff made here too.

All together this creates shortages, and inflation. Millions of people have lost people they know to the virus. Many millions more have had it and have health problems from it long term. You can pretend it's not a problem, even doesn't exist, but then you see the impacts anyway. That's the crux of it. And you will find the countries who ignored it, and stayed open, and have done relatively "better" economically, are the ones with the highest levels of inflation. In the economy we have built for ourselves, it's brilliant and great when it works, but bad when it doesn't. Inflation is a sign of a roaring economy. It's a good thing traditionally, when we didn't have $30,000,000,000,000 in debt. But with that much debt, which we run on literally, it becomes a VERY bad thing. And inflation was my biggest economic concern since day 1, precicesly because of what's in this post.

over American made. We are wholly incapable of affording our own labor, much less satisfying our domestic demand.

Remember when the US led the world in chip production? Yeah, we invented the freaking PC and microchip. Cell phones too. A PC was the equivilant of $4,000+ back in the 80's when they were made in the US. But we learned there's a limited market for $4,000 PC's. So we farmed off manufacturing of cutting edge chips to Asian countries who could make them for pennies on the dollar, and prices plummetted. And we gobbled up all kinds of electronics, cheaply sourced from Asia, with American technology.

Remeber when we had a textile industry? Yeah, well that went overseas too. And we LOVE cheaper underwear, tshirts, also. So much stuff has been deflated in price due to "free trade" over decades now. There was once bipartisan support for "free trade", and still effectively is today, despite the rhetoric.

Anyway, a pandemic is about as bad as a world war for ending the deflationary benefit of "free trade". Then the other deflator of the domestic dollar are illegal immigrants. Lord if they left we'd be screwed.

Anyway, we're exposed now on this front. DUE TO COVID. Worst part is you can't even blame democrats or republicans, but ourselves for accepting cheaper goods for less supply chain security. Same with oil. We love the (very real) economic benefits that result from all the problems we love to complain about.

You said it well. It is unbelievable how people don't come close to connecting the dots. Like it is our birthright to have access to cheap stuff, ample parking, etc. We are a society built on stilts. It is propped up. To blame one person for it is remarkable.

Anyway, I'd like to plug an organization called Strong Towns. The way we have developed and financed our cities since WWII has made communities more fragile. We are not building wealth. It is all short-sighted and heavily financed. It's non-partisan, and they have some great media and two books.
