Couple of quick comments on the UGA cheating thread.

Been away for a few days. Just read the thread. Decided to post here because I figured it would get buried in the other thread.
1. Colquitt Conunty High is my alma Mater. (For any UGA guys here, Ray Goff and I were in school there at the same time. He was two years behind me.)
2. Rich Probst is a jerk of major proportions. As my grandma used to say, "He'd sooner lie when the truth would serve him better." His allegations without corroboration are useless.
3. Most important of all, we're talking NCAA here. Anybody who claims to know what the NCAA will or will not do is delusional. The only thing consistent about the NCAA is their total lack of consistency.
4. I have no idea what is going on. I have no idea if Probst is telling the truth or not. I have no idea what the NCAA would do if it were clearly proven he is telling the truth.

The higher the profile of the school, the less the NCAA does.

The NCAA has become the US government. They will do what is in their best interests until the members/citizens demand otherwise. Since I believe most of the big time programs cheat to some degree, they want the NCAA to mostly look the other way. Therefore, I expect virtually no significant punishment. Further, due to “Kirby’s law”, I expect it will take years to come to any such conclusion.
Man have I become cynical...

What would you like the NCCA to do? Open an investigation based on a recording of some discredited former HS coach telling some guy named "Nub" about UGA and Alabama paying recruits? How is that different than the many posts I read on TNET about UGA paying recruits?

I were the NCAA. But, my immediate thought when reading about him, and hearing that tape was:
"You know, the Devil himself probably knows a lot more about Heyall than the average Joe Blow on the street."

What would I like them to do? That is an entirely different matter. I was stating what I think they will do.
What I would like them to do boils down to “do what is right”. I have no idea if there are supporting facts. If there are, or if the evidence is found worthy of investigation, investigate. If found guilty punish accordingly.
As a side note, I wonder if this does turn into an investigation, I wonder if Kirby’s law ends up backfiring. If UGa stalls, and the investigation takes years, that is something recruits will certainly consider. The longer it goes on, even if ultimately the findings go UGa’s way, the worse for the program.

A national sports reporter recently raised similar allegations.
Of course, as Dabo says, don't worry about the opinions of people you wouldn't go to for advise.
Georgia is apparently concerned enough by the reports that they are investigating.

My D-I-L's best friend works for the NCAA at their headquarters. She told her that during the North Carolina debacle that they were walking on egg shells and were intimidated by the Tar Heels. I was was skeptical, as she said this way before the final outcome, but now think she was right on target. The NCAA won't even look into this.

even if this all turns out to be entirely factual, at the end of the day, the NCAA won't do jack **** about it other than perhaps some mild slap on the wrist, if that.

the source of these allegations has very little if any real credibility.
Without some compelling facts and overwhelming evidence, nothing is going to happen and even if such evidence does exist, I still have my doubts the NCAA would do anything.

It truly is amazing how little power they have on the big issues.
But they will wield their power when it comes to telling an athlete they can’t have cream cheese on their bagel. (I do think that one was amended in recent years, but it used to be a famous ridiculous bylaw)

Speaking about the power of the NCAA, this where I found the UNC case interesting. UNC essentially claimed that the students (including student-athletes) were going to legitimate classes, getting legitimate grades and that the NCAA had no jurisdiction over that. I agree with them on that. In my opinion, the NCAA should have reported their findings and UNC’s assertions that these were legitimate classes to the accreditation boards and proceed with revocation of the school’s certification. Having the school tainted in that way would be far more damaging.

Ray Goff went to Moultrie High, not Colquitt Co.

Same high school. When Goff went there there were two small HS in the country besides Moultrie High. Norman Park and Doerun High. they had a city school system and a county school system. Not long after Goff and I graduated, they consolidated and there is one HS for the County - Colquitt County HS.

Yes, you are correct. I think the merger happened in the late 70s (maybe early 80s?). But of all the people I know who graduated from Moultrie HS pre-merger, I have never heard any of them say they went to Colquitt Co. They always still say Moultrie. Just kind of interesting. (Colquitt Co did take Moultrie's nickname though - the Packers).

Well, if you can change to Bulldogs, then yeah you change. I mean, that's a no brainer. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter
