Coots finished #4 BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T MAKE BCS

Jan 7, 2014, 10:18 PM

They passed all the losers of BCS games...you know, the teams who actually played somebody (not 17 ranked jokes)

... and they avoided having to face Auburn in the SEC Title Game.

Those are three almost certain loses they avoided (in addition to a tough BCS Bowl match-up) en route to #4 ranking.

We played 2 "BCS" teams before the bowl season...

Beat them both.

One was UCF, I forget who the other team was.

USC would have gotten a bid over Clemson.

Neither of us would have because the bowl games would not have mattered. You are ranked 4th because all the good teams played good teams. The ones that lost allowed you to move up by beating an awesome Wisconsin team.

wut.

The selection committee that seeds the top 4 teams also sets the matchups for the 4 bowls that are not hosting semi-finals that year. No number limit for conferences so its gonna be based on their rankings

Re: Don't worry. In the new playoff system

Jan 8, 2014, 1:38 AM

Let me explain this to you so simple coot mind can understand. Where were you ranked before bowl season? Do you understand now. You don't play all the bowl games and then seed the 4 teams. The 4 teams are selected for the playoff then the other games are played. Your 4th place ranking is after everything has been settled not before it started.

Let me spell things out for you

Jan 8, 2014, 1:50 AM

I wasn't saying we'd get in the playoff. I was saying we'd get in the equivalent of a BCS bowl which will be one of the 6 bowls that host semi-finals but are in an off season.

Those bowls are also selected by the playoff committee and they are likely to select the teams they have ranked 5-12 to fill the bowls

Re: Let me spell things out for you

Jan 8, 2014, 2:30 AM

Then I apologize for misunderstanding you. The bottom line is you will never play for anything of significance. You will not win the SEC,you will not win a BCS bowl equivalent as you call it,you will not win the Playoff. Spin it however you want you will remain a baseball school for eternity. Also we were in the top 12 ranking as well,so why do you think you would get a bid over us if it is based on ranking? From what I understand the committee will decide not our ranking.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Really Whitehurst? You can read the future, right? I bet five years ago you would've said the Coots will never finish in the top-10, never finish in the top-10 three years in a row, never finish ranked higher than Clemson, never beat Clemson five times in a row. In fact, I'll bet folks here can go back a couple months and find where you probably predicted the Coots would not beat Clemson this year. You and others like you are ones who makes this fan base look foolish with your brash and profane talk. I get it though, you can condemn any team to failure and propel the tigers to greatness just because YOU proclaim it. Fact is, the Coots have a #### good football team and so do the Tigers. Right now, Spurrier is a better coach than Dabo, and the chances for ongoing Coot success is pretty good. And lastly, I'm just curious, are you capable of carrying on an intelligent conversation with anyone who has a different opinion than you or is your only retort always going to be "get out of here you (insert expletive) coot!" But, at least you did apologize so I guess there is hope.

Last season is over. Don't assume beating Clemson, or anyone else for that matter, is a given. Connor Shaw was the key to most of the Gamecock victories. He was a true competitor. Likewise, I assume nothing for the upcoming season. It will be an adventure with a lot of new players in key positions. Hopefully, they can carry on...

Why can't Clemson beat Carolina.

Jan 8, 2014, 6:22 AM

1. State championships don't matter to them
2. Who won this year don't matter but who won the most games in the 50's does.
3. They are depleted from a brutal conference schedule.
4. Dabo is too busy thinking of comebacks for the obc's one liners.
5. 5 stars don't match up with 3 stars that well.

It is possible you would get in

Jan 8, 2014, 6:56 AM

But you just assume it will be the top 12. Bowl tie-ins are still a part of this new system. Let's say FSU, auburn, bama, and MSU get in the playoff. That means mizzou plays Oklahoma in the champs bowl. Stanford plays ohio state in the rose bowl. Clemson plays the next highest big 10/sec/Nd. And Baylor plays either scar, Oregon, or UCF. Would the bowl want to rematch Scar in the orange bowl? Most likely not and they may reward the conference champ UCF with the last pick. So you might not be getting into a bcs bowl if they played out like this season.

Let me clear it up Coots

Jan 8, 2014, 7:39 AM

If you had gotten a BCS bid and won, you would still be no better than #4. If you had gotten a BCS bid (and played someone tougher than Wisconsin) and lost, you would be significantly lower than #4.

You benefitted in the final rankings from missing the BCS and getting an easy assignment in a lesser bowl. You won the war of attrition.

I never said that you didn't deserve your ranking; I only gave an opinion on how you got so high. I know you beat us on the field. I am not convinced that the better team won, but you won, and deserve to be ranked ahead of us.

Re: Let me clear it up Coots

Jan 8, 2014, 7:56 AM

Yeah, I really wanted a piece of OSU.

We beat them in the Outback Bowl a while back...

And some of my co-workers here in Washington are loud-mouthed OSU alum/fans.

I have enjoyed pointing out that they are now 0-4 against the State of South Carolina in bowl games now!

Also about the bowl game thing...

I really wanted the Cotton Bowl, but they kept a more regional pick with Mizz.

Anyway, hats off to you for putting OSU in their place.

And hats off for validating your season.

Kind of underscores the unimportance of a non-championship BCS bowl game doesn't it? By the way, the Coots beat two BCS bowl game participants, and three who finished in the top-10. How is it assumed they would have lost in a BCS bowl game. Ohio State only beat Wisconsin by a touchdown by the way. They were probably pretty evenly matched teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Would not have finished higher than 4 even with a BCS win

Jan 8, 2014, 2:16 PM

But they passed 4 BCS losers to get to #4

Just saying Wisconsin was an easier opponent. I am not questioning their ranking, just offering my take on it.
