Controversial Ending to Coastal Game

Dec 18, 2021, 4:32 AM

However, it was the right call by the officials. It is ruled a catch in bounds for a first down. The clock starts soon as the ball is spotted not on ref's whistle. Coastal was penalized a lot in that game. Refs sure weren't favoring them.

I didn’t see any controversy just clueless announcers

That didn’t know what was happening

Agree. And if it wasn't a catch, it was a 4th down play!

How can soccer function with replay but football refs have to spend half the game reviewing calls?

The announcers didn’t even have any idea how that ended. Multiple explanations. The whole deal seemed off. I mean did or did he not catch it. The ref called it both ways at one point. Then I guess they said catch and tackled in bounds. Definitely strange.

I thought the receiver never had control of the ball before he fumbled it out of bounds . Thus It would have been 4 th down with at least 2 or 3 seconds left on a stopped clock due to incomplete pass. Just my opinion.

No, that *was* the fourth down play

Also, the game's ending raises an interesting question about the college rule on clock stoppage after a gained first down:

If the rationale is, as always noted, that the clock "momentarily stops to allow the chains to be reset," why would that apply to a first down that results in first and goal? You don't need to measure out ten yards in that situation, as the team cannot gain another first down.

I wondered at the time last night if there is a little-known exception in the rule book.

The 10 second injury runoff is what won the game. Never did see what the actual call was on the last play but that loss of time killed them. And I thought they were the salukis or something, when did they become huskies?

Southern Illinois is the Salukis not Northern***
