You were instrumental on helping getting this College Football National Championship thing at Clemson started. Well deserved.

Homer was a great one. His long run on 3rd down near the end of the NC game kept the ball away from Nebraska and preserved the game. After the game, he was dehydrated and needed IVs.

I first heard of him when he was being recruited as a HS senior. The gamecock recruiter went to his home in Athens, GA, and Homer met him wearing a Tiger Paw shirt.

I'm old and my memory may be off, but I thought that Homer had an IV at halftime. It was hot and humid that night which of course gave Nebraska an excuse for losing.

As an '84 grad, thanks for your leadership and efforts back in the day Homer. You and Perry and Jeff and Ford and team made us all winners in 81!

Offensive MVP Award. Think college football has changed much since back then? :)

The Perry Tuttle SI cover following that game is still one of the most Iconic of All Time, far as I am concerned.

Congrats to Homer-well deserved. His effort that night in Miami is still memorable. Ran the option to perfection, and he absolutely left it ALL on the field that night. Couldn't be happier for Homer.

First African-American QB

Dec 17, 2021, 11:06 AM

Was Jimmy Raye considered the first National Champion African-American QB, with Michigan State?
