Congrats on the thursday night beating...

Sep 24, 2016, 8:46 AM

The final score was not indicative of how lopsided that game was. Dabo took it very easy on us.

And that game is indicative of the lopsided talent differential between Clemson and Tech. We're just not in the same tier with the Tigers wrt football.

I used to look forward to the Clemson game. But recently, I have not, because you guys have been dominating us since about 2012.

For us to close the gap, we need a total change in mentality with regard to our football program, from the top down within our administration. Just firing CPJ won't be enough. We need a coach who will bring a more relevant offensive scheme, and we need to give him more freedom in recruiting academic risks. But neither will happen soon.

I hope you do well the rest of the year. Beat Louisville, FSU & SC.

your honest thoughts. What do you think your coach needs to do to keep his job this year or is he not even on the hot seat? Don't think you will win your division but I think you'll be near the top so it may hinge on the UGA game if indeed he is on the hot seat.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think he's on the hot seat...

Sep 24, 2016, 9:26 AM

We might actually have a decent year. Maybe go 8-4 or something like that if we're lucky.

Our next game with Miami will tell me a lot about this season. Miami has consistently spanked us during the CPJ era, but with a coaching change and it being at home, I think we have a shot in that game.

Back handed slight or not. Clemson typically recruits very level headed kids that perform well in school. Of course some may slip through the cracks.

No, it was not a slight at all...

Sep 24, 2016, 9:23 AM [ in reply to Not sure if the recruiting academic risks comment was a ]

Every program in the nation has to recruit football players that are not at the same level academically as the rest of the student body. We do that at Tech as well.

The difference between us and schools like UGA, Alabama, etc, is that we're more strict in accepting marginal academic risks. It's true. They loosened it up some during the O'Leary era. But they then tightened some after that.

Not a slap at Clemson at all. You guys do it the right way. Your administration wants to compete at the top of college football, and they make sure that Dabo and his coaches are given the resources to do that. That is not the case at Tech.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Smitty - I, like many others, enjoy your annual check-in

Sep 24, 2016, 9:30 AM

Hope you all continue to do well for the rest of the season. Or crummy if that is what the fan base wants - though it sounds like with the current admin support that PJ is the best candidate to work with available resources.

Sep 24, 2016, 9:35 AM

BTW, Venables really has made our offense look silly the last few seasons. He's got great talent to work with, and he's a competent DC, who makes his players execute in defeating blocks and making tackles. He has eaten CPJ"s lunch the last few years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No, it was not a slight at all...

Sep 24, 2016, 10:51 AM [ in reply to No, it was not a slight at all... ]

Smitty...it's the coaching...the style...and the commitment to the overall program. Clemson have Atlanta/Georgia guys who are more than qualified to get into Tech...Tre Lamar and DW4 are obvious examples. Here's the real issue, though...how does Stanford march through Atlanta in Sherman-like fashion every single year and sign a local player? If not Stanford, then Oregon...USC...and so forth? That's what should irritate the heck out of Tech fans. Twenty miles versus 2K miles.

Of course, the city of Atlanta isn't especially helpful to the Tech cause these days...that's a lot to overcome.

Clemson has tighter restrictions than many other Power 5

Sep 24, 2016, 11:06 AM [ in reply to No, it was not a slight at all... ]

schools in that we don't sign JUCO's. I think the last JUCO we signed was in 2006. Most of the SEC schools have no problem signing 3-4 JUCO's a year. They do help plug gaps, and many are very talented players that make a difference. Auburn would not have won the NC in 2010 without JUCO Cam Newton.

Clemson University's stance has been if the University can't project the student to graduate from a major at Clemson, we will not clear them. That essentially eliminates all JUCO's, and has prevented a few high school recruits over the years that were ruled eligible by the NCAA, but not allowed to enroll at Clemson. A pretty famous one of those was a 5 star receiver, I think his name was Dwight Johnson, the last name may be wrong, but anyway, the funny thing about him not being admitted to Clemson was the school that did immediately accept him, UNC. Now, that is not to say we are a more prestigious school than UNC, simply that we apparently hold our athletes requirements to a higher standard than UNC. The recent athletic academic scandal at UNC reinforces that opinion.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't doubt that....

Sep 24, 2016, 11:24 AM

But at Tech, our problems run deeper than anything at Clemson. It's obvious that your school wants to compete at the top in words...and most importantly in ACTIONS.

At Tech, the lack of commitment shows through in so many ways. It's not just the recruiting of marginal academic guys. It's the breadth of majors that are offered (in our case, not offered). It's the fact that ever single Tech degree requires at least one semester of calculus or "survey of" calculus. There are issues with facilities. It's the entire approach to athletics that makes it hard on our coaches.

I would love to get another coach who brings a better scheme that CPJ's option scheme. His scheme drives me crazy. But even if we brought in a coach who had a more relevant scheme, he would still be dealing with an unhelpful administration.

There has to be a change in mentality at the top.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know about the calculus class requirement at GT ...

Sep 24, 2016, 12:19 PM

... (I went to grad school at GT), but this is year 2016, doesn't every high school kid that is in a college prep curriculum take at least a calculus of one variable type class now before they graduate high school?

Seems if you are a high school athlete with a good shot at a college scholarship your high school guidance counselor should get you into the college prep classes.

So, passing a basic calculus class in college doesn't seem like that daunting a task to me (but then I was really, really good at math growing up some my judgement may be skewed on that).

Just wondering out loud.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was also good at Math...

Sep 24, 2016, 4:59 PM

And I went to Tech because of that. I was not a football player. I didn't consider calculus to be that big of a deal. But that was me. We're not talking about you or me. We're talking about guys who think they will be NFL football players.

We require every single student to take some sort of calculus class. There's NO WAY that doesn't affect our football recruiting. Just NO WAY.

Kids that want to play in the NFL generally don't want to take Calculus. THey rarely want to major in Engineering or Math/Physics/Chemistry, and often not even in Business. I can guarantee you that if you had that requirement at Clemson and then only offered a few majors, your recruiting for football would suffer. There's no way it wouldn't.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know you have some challenges with the one semester of

Sep 24, 2016, 12:32 PM [ in reply to I don't doubt that.... ]

calculus, we have a lot of Engineering students at Clemson, and we all usually have 4 semesters of calculus in our curiculum's.

I have said many times that PJ's offense kills your ability to recruit any offensive players, from lineman, to WR, RB, and QB's.

If a 5 star player in any of those offensive player categories was a legacy recruit with both parents Tech grads, it would be very difficult to pick Tech with that offense. They would not be in a position to showcase their talents in a offense that would translate to the NFL. Now, you still have had some WR/RB guys go to the pros, but the scheme with PJ just prevents the players skill set to be shown in an offense more reflective of what they would see in the NFL.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But your "alot of engineering students" generally doesn't...

Sep 24, 2016, 5:01 PM

include many football players.

I agree with you about CPJ. He's part of the problem. But for Tech to reach our potential, we need more than just changing coaches. We need an attitude change at the top.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Makes sense about the lack of majors being a problem.

Sep 26, 2016, 12:47 AM

I do find it odd if there aren't some other easier majors though, especially since even elite schools like Duke, Vanderbilt, and Stanford have easier majors like social sciences, communications, human resources, etc. which are popular among athletes. Heck, Duke's sociology major is only 90 credit hours and most all of their basketball players go that route.

I also agree with others that PJ's scheme is hurting GT a lot. The talent level there has declined a lot from where it was, and they still had the same majors before as they do now. The difference is that elite skill players - especially QBs and WRs - don't see it being a good fit for their talents.

I read last week that Clemson has something like 42 four and five star players on the current roster, and GT has 3. That discrepancy was very surprising to me.

Re: Makes sense about the lack of majors being a problem.

Sep 26, 2016, 7:51 AM

I went to a GT graduation in 2008, and the graduates were divided into 2 groups - one for science based majors and one for humanities based majors. It appeared to be a 60/40 split. It seems there are plenty less difficult majors available with the only problem being a single "survey of" calculus class. With one on one tutoring that one course should be doable by most college bound athletes. If I'm wrong about this, maybe Smitty or another GT grad can enlighten me.

Re: Recruiting academic risks?

Sep 24, 2016, 9:33 AM

To put it lightly, our administration has hindered football over the years. It's been that way for a very long time. Occasionally, our coaches overcome that mentality, such as during the 1990 season. But more often than not, it dooms us to 7 win type seasons as the norm, with occasionally really good (2014) and occasionally really bad (1994, 2015).

Think about it like this: We are right smack dab in the middle of Atlanta, a hotbed of football talent. We could recruit an entire 2-deep without leaving the Metro Atlanta area. If our administration was committed to winning football, and backed it up with actions, we could be a powerhouse program on the level of any in the country. In the old days, being in the city hindered us, but not anymore. I think our location could actually help us.
