Conference Hierarchy and Strength of Schedule Subjectivity

Aug 19, 2016, 8:52 AM

After subjecting myself to yet another thread on FGF about how easy our schedule is versus the SEC, bla bla bla, I feel compelled to write about a point that the Gamecocks always miss when discussing relative strength of schedule:

They don't get to play themselves.

Whenever they list how hard the SEC is, they always say, "We've got to play TN, FL, and UGA every year." Certainly true and a valid point.

But they ignore their own place in the SEC hierarchy and their own lack of contribution.

Take their argument, but replace it with Florida. A Florida fan would say, "We've got to play TN and UGA every year." They would not say, "We've got to play TN, UGA, and the Gamecocks every year." A TN fan would say, "We've got to play FL and UGA every year." Two teams instead of three. The Gamecocks schedule would certainly look a lot easier if they could replace Florida with, well.... the Gamecocks.

The point is, if you are a team at the top of the conference hierarchy (like Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, or FSU), the conference looks a lot easier because you don't have to play yourself. Compare that to a Louisville, who has to play both Clemson and FSU, or a Washington, who has to play Oregon and Stanford.

The best teams in every conference usually have to play two or three really hard games to go undefeated. Ohio State has to beat Michigan, Michigan State, and another from a group of teams that will be good. Southern Cal has to beat Oregon, Stanford, and another from a group of teams. Alabama has to beat LSU, Auburn and another team from the group of Ole Miss, TN, etc.

To summarize, if you suck, your schedule always looks hard.

Clemson's schedule is ALWAYS harder than Duke's and UNC's.

When I look

at the gamecock schedule for this season I see no team that scares me. Tenn.and Ga.would probably be a tough opponent but who else among that group would be a sure loss for Clemson?

I wish we played UMass. Western Car, East Car. and Vandy instead of NCSU, Lville, Pitt and Cuse!
Actually I don't. The chicks have no room to talk about schedules

Also let's not forget Gamecock fans, it was YOUR choice join the SEC. Nobody to blame but yourselves. It was fun when you were beating those teams when they sucked, now it's your turn to suck and play those teams. Ta ta.

Minus a 3-4 year period of being above average, it's always been SC's turn to suck.

I've been saying that for years. Their schedule is only hard because they are the Gamecocks and they suck. If they could play the Gamecocks they would have an easy schedule... We can all agree that the SEC is no more difficult for Alabama than the ACC is for Clemson and FSU.
