Concussions and other head injuries.....

I understand that College Football and the NFL have taken many steps to try and limit head injuries in football but what else can be done? Football is a violent sport and kids are being taught to use their shoulders and not lower their head. New technology is also something that is constantly being explored; however, concussions and head injuries have always been a part of the sport, but this year there seems to be some very noticeable on the field concussions (Hines and Tua). I know it is difficult to stop them when a 240lb linebacker is running at you full speed ahead but what else can be done? It is only a matter of time before we have a death on the field, or a player gets cleared from protocol and goes back out on the field and is killed with the next big hit he faces. Hines trying to get off the field was scary last night. Tua's injury two weeks in a row was scary. We all know about players like Junior Seau who took his own life and it was attributed to all the concussions he has and CTE.
Is enough being done to address it? Is it a risk one takes to play the sport? Is the training staff to blame? Coaches to blame? Players to blame? Is it a combination of all?
Thoughts?

weren't maybe the product of the construction of the field. It used to be that everyone played on pretty normal dirt and grass. Now there are heated fields and special turf and all sorts of things. Both Tua's concussion and the guy last night were not from the hit by the defense but from their heads slamming into the turf after the hit. Heads hitting the turf is not a new thing. Getting concussions from it seems to be, at least at the rate we're seeing it presently. Just wondering if the turf and substrate are maybe less forgiving than they used to be when they weren't so high tech and heavily engineered.

Very good point. Definitely a thought for discussion.

Did you know that there are more soccer related head-injuries every year than there are in football?
I'm sure something can be done to increase the effectiveness of helmets. That being said, there are inherent risks in playing sports and the only solution is to not participate.
There's an anti-football crowd in our country who want to destroy the game, not for safety reasons but because it's "Americana". That's why the soccer stat is relevant. Ask them if they feel the same way, I bet you get a different answer.

The soccer stat is also irrelevant to most people because soccer is irrelevant to most people, even though there are probably more kids in the US who play soccer than play football. I played soccer for several years (goalie) and had two concussions, but those were from collisions with other players. As a keeper, I didn't head the ball much, much less go up for a contested one and end up headbutting another player. Soccer is a much rougher sport than people think because they're basically wearing no pads, don't get to cycle out for several minutes while the offense or defense takes the field. You don't sub out and come back in. You play hurt or you don't play. But again, most people in the US don't care about soccer. But I do get your point about football being Americana, and would tend to agree with that.

Great to hear your perspective. Growing up I played soccer, then switched to football in high school. Soccer is more physical than most people realize. That being said football is definitely a more violent sport. You get up hurt after almost every play.

Especially with younger kids, heading the ball in soccer is a real problem for concussions. Their smaller heads don't do as well vs the ball in the conservation of momentum equation.
In football, the helmets make the concussion problems worse because the impact forces are allowed to go way up. Head protection is a tug-of-war between protecting vs subdural hematoma/skull fractures and protecting vs concussion. More protection from one means less protection from the other. In general, the former has worse outcomes, so we end up with more concussions as that is the lesser of the head injury evils.

Thank you, I've been saying for a while once soccer players donate their brains for CTE research they will see severe CTE too.

The answer to stopping concussions is to do away with the present helmet. This helmet is used from pop Warner football to the NFL.
It is constructed of a very hard shell with heavy padding inside a heavy face mask. All of this weight makes it a weapon and gives a false sense of security.
Football should go to a light weight, shock absorbing rubber helmet with no hard outer shell.
This would force players to tackle with their shoulders and not lead with the head. It would also teach players to wrap their arms around the player being tackled and lock-up.
Most players today want to make the huge impact hit for effect and offensive players are learning how to absorb that hit, bounce off and get additional yardage.

I have said for years that injuries could be reduced by taking away the helmet. That would (should) stop players from using their bodies like cruise missles.

The biggest concern are back to back Concussions. One of our son's soccer teammates in HS was bad enough team mates had to guide him from class to class. He exited the game for only a few minutes and played again 3 days later. His mom is a nurse, you think she would know better. I mentioned it to the coach and to his dad. Sheesh.
Also, it's the accumulated of small hits to the head for several years that can also lead to CTE.

HillBillyTiger That is scary stuff right there especially for a High School kid. I am sure concussions happen in MMA and Boxing a lot but you don't hear it mentioned in those sports.

after the Tua fiasco. Colt RB got up looking like a wino after two sacks of Ripple last night after a head hit on a play, and he was hustled off the field before you could say "BOONE"S FARM". If they do institute that "gross motor skills" aspect of keeping players out for possible concussions, he would certainly have failed it. He had no motor skills, gross or otherwise for about a minute.

I predict that years from now we will look back on football and realize that it’s more damaging to the body than we previously thought.
