Playoff Expansion

Dec 31, 2021, 9:26 PM

Since this Georgia game is basically over (I'd love to speak too soon here). It's time to soak in another year of extremely lackluster performances in the Semi's. And that brings up the question. Why expand on the playoffs when I can count on one hand how many good Semi-Final Playoff matchups there has been?

Alabama-OSU 2014 (Was a good game to watch even though Bucknuts ended up winning)

2015 - None. Both games from Alabama and Clemson were one sided.

2016 - None again. Alabama and Clemson again both had one sided games. (31-0 suck it Buckeyes)

2017 - Georgia had a good shootout with OU (that makes 2 good games so far out of 8)

2018 - Clemson boat races ND. Alabama allows OU to start sneaking back but the game was really over at half so we won't count that one. 2 out of 10 games so far played that have been good.

2019 - Clemson Ohio State was a classic game. LSU destorys OU. 3 out of 12 games played now that were good watches.

2020 - No good games yet again. 3 out of 14 games now that weren't good.

2021 (current year) - Bama and Georgia both handling their opponents.

That would make it 3 out of 16 Playoff Semi-final games that were decent. The other 13 were either one sided or absolute annihilations. Why expand on more teams to give the viewers more one blowouts?

Just a thought watching these snooze fest games.

^^ Exactly, figures & facts don’t lie..

so why would having 8-12 teams going after each other prove anything except to get more teams & fans involved.

Hey, that’s why there are 42 bowls, for those losers!

The only benefits from it would be money for schools, travel sales (depending on the fanbases), and record books getting fatter for some teams. Outside of that, it's all negatives.

I buy the logic, but i have had a BLAST watching teams that BOTHERED to show up... I reference Rutgers and the travelers who went out of their way to play one more game...Those teams need a Participation
Trophy (no, really)...They had little preparation time, many had gone home...I will be a Rutgers fan just for this...

I think you guys have solved the equation - it's about money and getting more fans and more views on TV.
The competitiveness of the playoff games and the so-called student side of the student-athletes are not a real concern of the sponsors (advertisers not universities).

A by product of 2 things

Dec 31, 2021, 10:12 PM

1.Money obviously and 2. The obnoxious woke "inclusion" movement where everyone "deserves" to be included whether they earn it or not.

There is nothing on the field that would indicate the playoff needs to be expanded. The results confirm this, over and over again

And can we stop with the mid-major Cinderella nonsense now. They simply do not belong on the same field with elite playoff caliber p5 teams.

All of that being said

Georgia was #3, not #2. That tells you the experts do not necessarily pick the best teams. Who is to say the #5 or #6 wouldn't blow out the more highly ranked teams.

Common sense tells you that

Dec 31, 2021, 10:27 PM

For instance, Notre Dame is 5th who lost to freaking cincy. They couldnt blow out anyone near the top 4. Osu, who lost to michigan mind you...not to mention a mediocre oregon....

I get what you're saying. I don't like using the transitive property because in that sense Texas A&M is elite since they're the only team to beat Bama. But eye test most certainly says nobody can beat Bama or Georgia. Could make a case for Ohio State just because they have the athletes and would matchup well with them but record shows they have no business being in the playoff. They lost their games so they're out. Simple as that.

Football has been too top heavy this past decade sadly.

Well Georgia being ranked #2 or #3 doesn't matter because the matchup is still the same. Michigan earned their #2 ranking imo. They just don't matchup well with UGA. But the outcome would be all the same if this was ND, Oregon, Cincy, or OK State just based off eye test from the year sadly.

Certainly enough this year, and most others for that matter.

But we are in the age of the participation trophy.....

A group of people picked the four " best " teams who truly were not the best. I say we leave the people out of the equation and expand the playoff to all the conference champions.

I can see that being an issue as well. Say a 7-5 team beats a 12-0 team in a monumental upset. Does that now mean that 8-5 team deserves a playoff shot? Yeah, it makes conference championships matter again but it further devalues the regular season to just win enough to get the conference championship game. By that I mean out of conference games would be absolutely meaningless. It can also make playoff games abysmal at the same time if those 9-4 8-5 teams get in.

3/4 of the teams in it this year were conference champions. The 4th team that didn't win their conference ran the score up on the big 10 champion.
