College Football "pre-season" commentary/question

Aug 17, 2022, 5:50 PM

Dabo says this at least 5-7 times during interviews this time a year: "college football is the only level of football that does not have a pre-season or scrimmage season"!

My question is: I understand; "I think" the reason they don't allow it(safety - i'm guessing). But, these players have done jamborees and scrimmages in H.S. If any of them are lucky enough to make pro-ball - they will do even more scrimmages/pre-season.
Why then; would college Presidents basically turn down this ability? It certainly would draw plenty of interest if Purdue came down to Clemson to scrimmage! Or better yet, Michigan! Scrimmage or not - it would command attention and be an opportunity to generate revenue.

Do any of you think this is part of the: "it's all about the student-amateur-athlete and not about money" thought process? If so, haven't we passed that point a long, long time ago( transfer portal, NIL deals, etc.)?

I could be in the minority with this: but, I think it would be more welcomed than looked at like a bad thing. In fact, there is no obligation to participate if you don't want(if I was making the rule).
Have freshmen who didn't arrive on campus until summer - this is perfect! Have 1st time starters - this would be perfect to see where they are with no "poll-consequences"!

If you think there should be at least 1 game allowed, comment. If you don't think it would be a good idea, comment. I would love to see a different angle or be enlightened on something I missed as it relates to this topic. I think it's loosely tied to not proving pre-season polls "inaccurate" based off scrimmages. But, coaches use scrimmages in different ways. You really can't tell much if you aren't playing "just 1st teamers" which is unlikely during a scrimmage.
Thoughts?

Dabo seems to be minimizing spring practice, summer workouts, and fall camp.

There is plenty of practice time to get ready for the season. Plus, we often start the season with 1-2 cupcake opponents as well.

To answer your question, I don’t think preseason games would accomplish much. Look at the NFL games. They are a snooze fest and mostly just serve to play backups. Can’t we accomplish that with our own intra-squad scrimmages?

JK - I know from being an athlete myself; that when you practice against the same people: over time the quality of the practice kind of diminishes.
Not because they don't get better/worse - but because they get to "learn you"! During a competition against an "unknown" opponent, they have to react to what you are doing. And, I may not have explained that the best. But, basically, your own team knows the plays after a while and it's possible they either look better or you look better because of that familiarity. Something that does not happen when you are actually competing.

Also, as I said, this is a common practice on all other levels of football. I do not think it would be boring or unneeded. The NFL btw still does pretty well in terms of the revenue made from pre-season games!

Again, you could structure it like a scrimmage or like a game. In my mind Judge - it's just one game against another school.
Anything more than that and it might get exactly as you said. No starters playing, waste of time, etc. The biggest thing is: "if you're hitting and scrimmaging anyway, why not put another school's players out there for one day"?
You really aren't going to scrimmage any less, no?

They currently allow 2 scrimmages!

They still average 3 million viewers a game for a pointless game with players that won’t be on the team, it would generate revenue and help the teams.

Judge Keller® ... True that. Furman & La Tech are cupcake scrimmages. Possibly GaT as well.

Think about how fun it would be to watch a spring and fall scrimmage vs anyone we want. Makes no sense and we should be doing it, especially since we are now in a it’s all about the money world for college athletics.

In my mind; something like a scrimmage may be the only time a player South of the Mason-Dixon line would get a chance to play in "The Big House" for example. Or "The Shoe"!
The bigger these conferences get; the less likely O.O.C games are less and less likely.

You get the work......"THE SAME HITS/PHYSICALITY"........you would practicing against your teammates! You keep the same time limits and hours - you just allow one of those periods to be against a team from another school.

Dabo is not alone in wanting it to happen!

I think a Golden opportunity is being wasted as well! But, obviously, it's not up to me or Dabo.

We don't need to know why, it just isn't done and isn't a good idea.

VB - I respect that.

I just would love a little more "substance" behind why you think it's a bad idea; if you would? If not, I understand.

*it won't save the player's hits - as they will still get hit vs. their own teammates during practice and during the two scrimmages.
*the same amount of time is used to practice as it is now. None of it goes against your season's outlook.

I respect your view - but I am with Dabo on this! Not like the NFL(who thankfully cut it to 3); but 1 scrimmage session.

With The Big 10 deal: "the facade is over"!

Aug 18, 2022, 12:52 PM

The facade that college football is solely about the student-athlete just needs to stop. Like the con man in Wizard of Oz(google it) who was busted behind the curtain pulling the strings. Stop it.

Scheduling flights during mid-week to go across the country is not looking after the student who is also an athlete.

Asking this thread question "offline" I heard: "less hits" and "looking after the student-athlete by not having them participate". It's not less hits because they still scrimmage against each other intramurally. They do participate; that's how they earn a starting job.

The amount of money being earned is crazy. There has to be some other force behind the inability to play other squads; because you don't get hit any less! You won't take any more time away from your schedule or not much more. I would think you would typically get schools that could bus to your school. Maybe Clemson and Tennessee scrimmage, for example.

I don't get it. 1 scrimmage or game. . . . .

If the majority of players are in favor of it, and participation is truly voluntary, I would say they should be permitted to have a scrimmage or two. Would I watch the scrimmages? No. The regular season is getting less and less interesting to me each season, and for my taste, a scrimmage that doesn't count would be no better regardless of the logo on the helmets.
