College football playoff could go to 8 or 16 teams in few years...

Apr 24, 2021, 4:42 PM

Think 8 teams would be more likely favored. I would only be interested in 16 teams if it included all FBS teams that won their conference.

The college playoff has probably helped Clemson more than

any other school in the country. Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State....those guys are always going to get the blue blood advantage, often when they don't deserve it. As Danny said, paraphrased, "nobody was EVER gonna give Clemson the benefit of the doubt. We were gonna have to earn it on the field." And we have. Three times now.

Or it could stay at 4,or make every team( are you reading this Notre Dame)join a conference ,and have to play a championship game( or do away with them),or take only the top 16 teams based on record, and /or Strength of schedule( eliminating any and all 2 loss teams).
And that's all I can think of at the moment.

Oh, and they have to play a complete schedule, or forfeit the games they can't play because of Covid-19.

I will believe 16 teams when I see it. That will make the season what possibly 17 games long for a couple of teams with conf. championship games? Yeah right. Talk is just talk.

Hancock has run NCAA hoops & football tourneys for decades

Apr 24, 2021, 7:18 PM

Hancock does not want more than 4 in the football playoffs, but he's getting older, and money talks. A good and humble man, I saw him speak at the Savannah QB Club 5-6 years ago.

The universities, college football and the networks will follow the money to 8 teams over the next few years possibly in parallel with Hancock's retirement.

IMHO it will be all 5 conf. champions and 3 at large. The first games are likely be at the higher seed's home field or a neutral site in close proximity to the higher seed. It's too much to expect east or west coast fans to travel cross country for up to three play-off games in a year - especially season after season.

It will eventually go to 8, but I do hope they allow only

one at-large per conference. The last thing I want to see is the SEC pushing to have 4 of the 8 team in it. We absolutely don't need that, if we want to keep the whole country interested!

Is 6, 8 or 16 teams really needed? Most of these final four games are blowouts. The only two competitive games are UGA vs Oklahoma in the 2018 Rose Bowl and Clemson vs. Ohio St 2019 Fiesta Bowl. So we expand to 16... then someone's going to say it should be 32. Then it'll expand to 64... then 60 with +8 play-in teams!

2014 Ohio St blew out Alabama; Oregon blew out FSU
2015 Clemson blew out Oklahoma; Alabama blew out Washington
2016 Clemson blew out Ohio St; Alabama blew out Michigan St
2017 Alabama blew out Clemson; UGA vs. Oklahoma = close game #1
2018 Alabama blew out Oklahoma; Clemson blew out Notre Dame
2019 LSU blew out Oklahoma; Clemson vs Ohio St = close game #2
2020 Alabama blew out Notre Dame; Ohio State blew out Clemson

Heck, most of these championship games were blowouts...
2014 Ohio St blew out Oregon
2015 Alabama vs Clemson kind of close
2016 Alabama vs Clemson close
2017 Alabama vs UGA close
2018 Clemson blew out Alabama
2019 LSU blew out Clemson
2020 Alabama blew out Notre Dame

I'm not in favor of expanding past 4 teams, but if they do, then 8 should be the absolute max. One thing is for sure....they could expand to 20-24 teams and the coots still would never qualify.
