College Football is Screwed Up

May 2, 2022, 9:22 AM

How can players make a ton of cash with the NIL but if a player does not get drafted he has no option to go back to school???? That makes zero sense.

The old excuse was he becomes a professional once he signs with an agent, but it seems like college football has a ton of professionals playing now with the NIL.

Good point. It's a huge mess and is on the way to be

May 2, 2022, 9:26 AM

ruined I'm afraid.

I'd say that this whole NIL thing was not well thought out

May 2, 2022, 10:09 AM

but it seems like it wasn't really thought out at all. Horribly implemented. What a mess, and what a shame for these kids who are caught up in it. It's feast or famine, seems like, and making inequality and the extremes even worse.

I guess at this point we have transfer portal, NIL, COVID extra years, and 2 different college football signing days.

Why not go ahead and add coaches having to predict which early exits won't be drafted to keep scholarships open for players to return in early May.

Roster management is a total piece of cake already right?

Hopefully the new NCAA president will put some regulations on NIL. Otherwise CFB will be going downhill.

Can a player simply stay in college forever

May 2, 2022, 10:39 AM

Why not? If you are making a good living going to college as a football player and you either won't get drafted or don't want to play for multiple teams until no one hires you, why not stay in college for the next 10 years?

News from USuC...
"Richardson was the 20th Gamecock arrested since Spurrier was hired in Nov. 2004"

Fluxus®
"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

Have been wondering the same exact thing. How can college athletes be ONLY eligible for 4 years, is SCOTUS really going to put up with that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Many of these kids now have NIL agents...

May 2, 2022, 10:47 AM

This bu!!$#!7 has absolutely professionalized, and ruined, collegiate athletics because, again, the NCAA lacked any vision or foresight to have sense enough to regulate it. Now that the horse is out of the barn, it will be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to go back and fix it.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Frank Howard and Bear Bryant are probably rolling........

May 2, 2022, 11:22 AM

in their graves regarding today's football rules and allowances. No way they would put up with NIL, the TP, and all the other stuff that's ruining the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are you kidding !?!?!?

May 2, 2022, 11:49 AM

Bear Bryant was paying players right and left. He was even paying some of them just to keep them from going to the competition. He was one of the main reason the NCAA imposed scholarship limitations.

I'm just referring to the NIL and TP rules - I never said...

May 2, 2022, 12:48 PM [ in reply to Are you kidding !?!?!? ]

that Bear Bryant was innocent about other things. I just mean that old-school coaches like him and Frank Howard wouldn't go for today's rules and policies.

Not a whole lot the NCAA could do once it ...

May 2, 2022, 11:29 AM

passed through the supreme court. The NCAA didn't want it and didnt really set up any regulation for it...yea there are some rules, not no way to enforce them.

The conspiracy side says that the NCAA is letting things runs amuck so they can jump in with a new president and 'save the day'...building a good name for themselves again. It'll be interesting to see who the new president is and what his plans are.

Good luck to NCAA for "saving the day" or even keep from looking like incompetent bewbs. I think that ship has sailed.

Re: College Football is Screwed Up

You'd probably have more players enter the draft and schools would have already replaced them with high school players or transfers. Seems like it would just create another mess.

The NCAA is screwed up! It is not just football. Looking for leadership. I hope they find it quickly.

You people don't want to hear this, but it's your fault. All of you who obsess over college athletics, who comb through recruiting analysis of 16 year old kids, who shell out tens of thousands of dollars per year for season tickets, absurdly over-priced parking, and 400% marked up merchandise. You caused this to happen. You caused college football to become an industry that, as a whole, turns a profit at least in the neighborhood of professional football, but somehow got away without technically paying it's employees. That ### was going to break eventually. This is what that looks like.
