College football as we knew it is dying. I am guessing

Dec 16, 2022, 12:26 PM

that there are others like me who really, really can feel themselves being turned off to a sport that they have truly loved for decades. It's both disgusting and depressing.

Right there with you, I was a die hard NBA and NFL fan, those went away long ago, it’s college football’s turn now. But still love my Tigers.

It's still a great sport, but very different

from what it used to be.

I don't see how we can ever go back to what it was.

Our players still have Clemson and the paw on their uniforms, so I will cheer for them like always.

I used to be really into college basketball (especially the ACC), but when the one-and-done started, I slowly began to lose interest. Just wasn't the same. Hard to get to know the players; then they're gone.

only if Clemson has a shot at tourney. I never know who the players are. I can't understand how that helps the NBA. I haven't watched an NBA game since the 90's. I wouldn't watch the NBA now if you paid me, too much politics.

I'm told we should respect the players making all the money

for these universities getting paid now. Here I was thinking all these years that having 100ks of dollars in education paid off for your atheletic ability was a fair trade off. On top of that you had 3+ years to demonstrate to the NFL why they would want to pay you the big bucks to come play for them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It used to be a fair trade off, until

Dec 16, 2022, 12:50 PM

schools started making a mockery of higher education. Accepting athletes who wouldn't get into school otherwise just because they are good at a sport, and then creating athlete-friendly majors so they don't have a hard time academically, and then providing them personal tutors and adjusted testing accommodations created a huge divide among the student body between the athletes and non-athletes. It's a joke.

I don't know what that degree is actually worth these days. What did that player actually learn in school to help them in a future career? Yes, they have a degree, but are we really educating them well when they are provided so many accommodations just so they don't have to work too hard and risk negatively impacting their athletic performance?

I realize I'm making broad generalizations here, and that there are plenty of student-athletes at Clemson who are bright, who are taking tough classes, and who do a fabulous job balancing their busy schedules. I'm talking about the football player who couldn't crack 1000 on his SAT and is majoring in something not very challenging for a non-athlete Clemson student.

This is actually making the argument for paying players worse. They are getting a fully paid scholarship which they are wasting, taking a place from a more deserving student, and now getting paid to do it.

higher education makes a mockery of itself by the stupid

The almighty dollar has spoken(again). College football, golf and camping were my hobbies forever. Someone needed my camper more than me and stole it 3 or 4 years ago. That left golf and college football. The college football I’ve always followed, now, has been stolen and replaced by greed, money, tampering and moving from one team to another for the best deal. I’ll follow Clemson to the end but what we have now is not what garnered my interest in the sport all the years leading up to now. I guess I’ll be playing more golf!

I probably watched all or parts of at least 6 or 8 games every Saturday and it was the same football I have always seen. The game has not changed.

Not even close to what it used to be. Almost 4 decades on this earth and at least 3 plus watching the sport.

Its not even recognizable and it shows in the stands of every Stadium including the elites.

Fans are leaving in droves, and i dont blame them because everyone was looked after in this whole sh@@ show except the one paying tge bills….the fan

Dec 16, 2022, 3:22 PM

up and the fellas play hard, I will still love the game. I've never understood turning it off because of how much money someone makes or how it just doesn't fit whatever pure form of the sport that used to exist.

I recommend not listening to all of the crap surrounding the game, and only watch the games. The boys still block, tackle, throw, and catch with the same intensity as the the guys who played in leather helmets - probably even moreso.

Go Tigers!

Dec 16, 2022, 4:36 PM

is trivial in the grand scheme of things. I feel good about supporting Dabo and his players 99.9% of whom are class act. If we had players who were just in it for the money, I would stop watching or caring. We are still the model program as far as I'm concerned in college football.

I don't think college football is dying. It is certainly changing and in ways that are challenging to our mindset. But life is change - and I am hopeful that college football can adapt to these changes in a positive way.

Maybe that won't happen, but I am not going to project the death of college football just yet.
