Cold light of day reflections.

Sweet Dubya last night, obviously. Here are a few reflections:
1) As many have noted, props to Baby Beamer for going for it on 4th & 14, changing QBs, and not kicking the field goal to avoid the goose egg. I hope the environment doesn't ruin him, but the coots have a good one and he'll just get better.
2) Loved the variety in the offensive run game. Going under center, the stand-up wishbone, the misdirection. Of course all of it looks good when the other team can't stop you, but still, I like the mix.
3) I'd say there was better play calling for about 3/4 of the game...and some usual brain farts. Not sure how much is TE and how much is Dabo, but we saw some of what we usually see - not trusting what the game is showing you, but it is what it is.
4) Overlooked in the win perhaps is how bad DJU was in the passing game. 9/19. Of course, as always, some of that was on the receivers and some of it was on play calling, but still...
5) Where was the TE? Did they just use him to block since we were committed to the running game? #84 is usually one of our best threats in the passing game.
6) Not the year any of us expected, but would love to see that 10-win streak extended in the bowl game.

DJ's abysmal passing performance was not overlooked. Nor was TE calling for a WR screen with Will out there as the so-called blocker.

I don't even know why we run screens. We must throw away 5-6 plays a game for it to work maybe once. Blocking is consistently atrocious.

I will say this about DJ...

I can think of three drops right off the bat. One of which was the good throw on 1st down from our 1 yard line, which was a great play call and a good throw... not great, but good. The receiver did not come any where close to high pointing the ball.
Thay being said, he still had some bad throws.
And TE had sone bad play calls and bad play designs.

So we resolve that he's 12 of 19.

The fact that he throws less than 20 times a game speaks volumes to me.

Oh, by no means take this as a defense of DJ.

He has been doing better... like not taking sacks.
And he makes good throws like the roll out strike he threw to Allen.
But the long interception was really poorly thrown. As was a screen pass that took the wr right into the defender.

There was one play where it had obviously been decided pre-snap where the ball was being thrown and he threw it into double coverage where it was tipped but hit the ground.
Easily could have been a pick 6 like we've had in the past.
The issue isn't just making the throws. It's also reading the defense and checking out of plays and going to second and third targets if the first isn't open.
I'm more concerned about those parts of the QB position than about him making the throws.
With two years in the system he shouldn't be having those issues.

"I like your shirt but .."
DJ has talents. One of them right now does not seem to be confidence. He seems a little frantic sometimes. Experience will cure that. He also telegraphs where the ball is going which makes it harder for RBs on a hand off.
I believe going forward he will prove to be an excellent QB as few have his talents. QB is a difficult position.

why did we wait till now

to put 2 backs in the backfield?
to throw it to 82?
I agree we looked good, but in the same breath, some coaching decisions that came out Saturday are frustrating to me in that they could've been useful against NC State and Pitt...even the pups.
What burns me up is how we got QB and WRs still off? Not on the same page in the last game of the year is inexcusable.

DJ had some very courteous mid-range throws.

Courteous in that I had time to go to the fridge and get another beer between the time the ball left his hands and the time it arrived to the now-double-covered receiver. Very courteous of him indeed.
