Coaching related questions (softball)

1 - some here have said that our recent decline is in part due to our girls' inability to hit the rise ball. To me, that implies we have no one that can pitch a rise ball. Is that correct? We can only hit what we get pitched to us, in a way?

2 - how does a person who has never in his life played fast-pitch softball (I'm assuming men don't play it competitively) end up coaching it? I get how a basketball player or football player ends up coaching basketball or football. But how does a man end up coaching a sport that men don't generally play? Men's basketball and women's - while very different - are similar enough. Dribble, pass, shoot. Same with soccer and hockey. But softball seems to be a very different sport than baseball. Just curious how a guy ends up coaching a sport like that.

I played men’s fast pitch softball until 1990. One of my teammates and roommates coached at Coastal Carolina and is in their Hall of Fame. The team we played on was Ehrhardt Motor Company. We played all over the Southeast in tournaments with at least 20 teams. You don’t hit a rise ball, you leave it alone. It will be a ball. Patience is the key. Change ups and drop balls are the hardest to detect. He told me Coach Rittman is one of the best coaches in the game. It was an incredible experience and very fast paced game. We won a lot of tournaments.

From what I understand Coach Rittman also played men's fastpitch softball. He's also been a college and Olympic softball coach as well. His resume is among the elites in the game. I think he's still building a program that will compete with Oklahoma, UCLA, and FSU. Looking at the season it started to go downhill with the FSU series. basically, FSU broke our girls and it's going to take something special to get them out of the gutter. Right now FSU is the only team that can compete with Oklahoma and I expect those two in the finally come Jun. But our girls can start hitting again it could get interesting in Norman in a couple of weeks. But they need to start hitting. It looks like the 2 weeks off helped the pitching but may have hurt our batting. Here's to them coming out of their slump starting Friday.

True, but our hitting woes started before fsu. It started with the Tennessee game. We hit and beat some teams at the very start of the season when teams are trying to figure it out. We didn't have much to figure out because we had most everyone back. Kinda wish everyone would quit using the "fsu " broke us scenario. We haven't won a series against a top team since we began our program. We'll get there.

To be fair, the Tigers were clobbering the teams they should have before the FSU weekend. They struggled a little against Virginia at home but then took care business with sweeps against BC and GT on the road scoring plenty of runs. Then came that Furman game right before FSU. A 4-1 win that didn’t look good. Almost like they tightened up with the Noles on their mind. Then there was FSU. Cagle bailed them out late against USuck, another poor game against Winthrop. They looked pedestrian against Syracuse, then the Liberty debacle, followed by deja-vu at VT. I think it’s fair to observe a team in perhaps a minor hitting slump really lost its way after that FSU weekend. Thompson’s outings got worse. Cagle looked fatigued in the circle. Only McCubbin really stepped up after FSU.

Correction, Pitt was the late series they played uninspired. Cuse series was much earlier.
