Clemson Volleyball Program

I am watching some of the NCAA volleyball tournament on ESPN and got to thinking how ever since I have followed Clemson we have never had very many good volleyball teams.
I looked over the records and we have made the tournament 4 times since 1999 and not at all since 2009. The 1999 team was super good, 31-3 but yet lost in the first round in the NCAA tournament. We lost in the first round in our other visits and only once did we advance to the second round in 2008.
I know the ACC is not a super strong volleyball conference but I wonder why out program in this sport has never truly taken off. I guess it's a bit like a baseball program up north

Coach Hoover did a pretty good job with the program...

Eight NCAA Tournament appearance over 22 years isn't great but it isn't terrible either. She also won conference championships in 1997 and 2007 as well as the regular season title in 1999.
However, after she resigned, the athletic department approached hiring a new coach very similarly to the way they handled things with the women's basketball program after Jim Davis' departure (Cristy McKinney, Itoro Coleman and Audra Smith were all God-awful hires).
Rather than going out and finding the best possible candidate available, and instead of the AD handling the job himself, they first assign the task to subordinates within the athletic department. Then, they set a fixed salary, and charged those subordinates with the task finding someone who would accept the position for the money Clemson was willing to pay.
Not a way to run a railroad IMO.

I am so glad you brought that up. Sadly imo, Clemson hasn't had a true AD since McLellan. Yeah yeah, I'm old and a lot went wrong during his tenure but he was the last one I remember that was tied to Clemson and believed Clemson should be "best is the standard" in every sport. There's no denying some of his great hires.
Too bad we can't clone Dabo.

T_I_P - off topic on vball but seems like we got us a Tennis coach. The class Weiss brought in should get us winning again. Do you think he'll stick around?
Nice win last night. I'm sure you posted about it but didn't see it. Thanks and appreciate all y'alls posts on the "other" sports. Winning is winning no matter what Clemson sports it is.

Yeah his recruiting class last year was rated very highly

but Nini Dica ended up never coming to Clemson which hurt it. This year, the freshman at the bottom of the lineup started to play better as the year went on. We will lose our #1 and #2 players for next year which we will have to replace.
It's only Weiss's second year, I am a bit disappointed in the results this year but I am hopeful for next year when it will be entirely Weiss's roster.

The Florida and Wisconsin game was terrific last night. Player from Spartanburg integral part of Florida team. Our volleyball facility is a problem. As one noted, balls hit ceiling during play. High schools have better facilities. A stand alone facility would be ideal, and would change our landscape instantly. Have Rittman a facility? Boom! Volleyball very popular and we pull food crowds. Current coach is very good Coach Williams, when he coached in Kansas, grew tired of coordinating practice with basketball and volleyball. He built the stand alone! Someone describes hiring process since Coach Hoover left - pretty accurate with guy who replaced her. Current coach better hire!

Wow, not sure why this deserved a TD. Clemson sports deserve the best no matter if it's a men's or women's team. Oh well.
