Climbing the Mountain vs. .....

Jan 3, 2021, 12:04 AM

being and owning the mountain.

It’s hard to climb the mountain, which we have, and thanks to all the tireless and dedicated Tigers who got us there. But we don’t own the mountain and don’t seem to have the edge to take control of the mountain.

Alabama is the mountain and owns the mountain, right now. It’s harder to stay on top of the mountain than it is to simply climb it. We all know this and, let’s be honest, right now some of you, like me, are wondering whether we have what it takes to be the mountain and own the mountain vs. simply climbing it every few years.

I’m no Alabama fan, but I’ve come respect the discipline and drive Coach Saban has instilled there. I’m also hoping our team, the players, understand how hard it is to own the mountain, not just be happy with showing up every now and then.

Just my few cents of philosophy after a serious #### whipping last night...

Go Tigers!!

Technically, I’d say ESPN owns the Mountain and owns the SEC. ESPN owns the CFP. The SEC is bought and paid for. Alabama is their preferred product and ESPN will do everything in their power to assist Bama recruiting, and SEC recruiting overall, and do as much as they can to hurt those that threaten their $2 billion investment.

Like it or not (^^^^) this is the real truth, nothing but the truth so help me God!!! For Tigers to be sitting up their with Bama is nothing short of a miracle that Dabo has been able to take our Tigers up that mountain, and be up there still with Bama after 6 long years. No other team can say they have been in the same company with Bama for this long, and we are comfortable being up there with them. And with our recruiting, I don't see any other team taking ors or Bama's spot on that Elite mountain. Just think. only a few players of our #1 recruiting class got to play a lot of snaps this season. We are Clemson, with an elite FB program!!!

Well, let's go back to the beginning of the CFP. During that time, Clemson has won 6 straight ACC titles, with 6 straight CFP appearances, with a record of 4-2 in the semi's and 2-2 in the Championship game.

During the same time, Bama has won the SEC 5 of 7 years. They have gone to the CFP 6 of 7 years. They have a record of 5-1 in the semi's and 2-2 in the championship game.

I think Clemson and Bama co-own the "Mountain". But that doesn't mean you win the whole thing every year. And some years, you don't even get to the finals or even the playoffs at all.

What happened last night is that OSU was just the better team. But they aren't the better program. It's just what happens every now and then. You guys will probably continue being in the mix every year for a while.

If Justin Fields plays as well as he did last night, OSU might beat Alabama. He played out of his mind. He's never been that good. It was a perfect night for him. And you guys were without our offensive coordinator, played a half without your starting safety, and without Skalski for much of the game. Just wasn't Clemson's night. But you guys will have your day again...just not this year.

Ohio may nab some more rent-a-players from the Portal.

Jan 3, 2021, 12:24 AM

You never know what they might have.

May? There is no "may". It is 100% guaranteed.

Thanks gosmitty for reminding Clemson fans about our run. Sure does seem to me to be more than "showing up every now and then."

OSU was the freshest most rested team we have played after a long covid season. I am not convinced that OSU is a better team than ours, but I will say that they look better than we did yesterday, and I'm sure it was bc they had only played a 6 game season, they had fewer bumps and bruises than we have, and they were well rested, and without nursing even close to as many starters as we were. They were hands down fresher, but I don't believe they are better. they had a lot more energy than our team had, and it was bc the rules were change that put the other conference teams at a disadvantage, and we can't argue with the truth bc, we just finished playing 11 games to their 6. OSU had an unfair advantage over us bc they had a more rested and fresher team. That's not an excuse when it's the facts!!!!

Honestly, I hated how last night went but I’m 100% satisfied with our program as it is. I admire Alabama but I would only want to be where they are if we could get there and stay there the way Dabo runs things. He has built and all around great program where everything matters, not just winning. He recruits great people not just great athletes and truly cares about their life after football. He hires great men as coaches that are able to duplicate the values that the program is built on. Clemson football is a winning program and will be for a long time but it’s a lot more than that and all the other stuff is just as important. Go Tigers!

We should have worn OSU down a little, so Bama want be playing against a totally fresh or rested team that we had to play. And yes, I want Bama to beat the skin off OSU, and I will be one of Bama's #1 fans for that game, Go Bama!!!

Just my two cents worth;
1)Nobody owns the mountain. Some teams, more than others have made the mountain, but even getting to the top at the end of the season you find yourself back at the bottom starting the climb all over whena new season begins.
Granted, Alabama and Clemson have had the most success in this new playoff format(6 times each making the top)as only 4 teams can make that climb.
The problem I have is not so much the climb, and reaching the summit, but not being able to complete the journey. Twice Clemson ,and Bama made it and became King of that Mountain.
But for Clemson the past two seasons that completion was cut short by two disastrous performances.
LSU was definitely the better team last year ,but Friday night against OSU, we didn't belong on that mountain. We were not prepared to claim to fight for that chance to grab the crown.and it showed.
So ,for now I see Clemson as one of those few teams who have what it takes to make the climb, but not the resources to stay and win that climb.

Have you forgotten the whipping The Tigers put on THE BEST COLLEGE TEAM EVER in 2018.

Apparently so.

I believe you’re referring to the one where Saban complained about us running “copycat” plays and his players complained that the season was too hard.

That was 2018,not 2020.But if you want comparison did you see the whipping LSU put on us last year.
Nice argument, but your no Sherlock Holmes when it comes to solving the case of the Missing Tigers Friday night.

To clarify, I’m referring to a time period longer than the last 5 or 6 years and depending upon which poll you refer to, Alabama owns 5x to 7x the national titles we own.

And no I'm not bashing our program. It was a big picture view. Seeing Travis and Amari joking around before their post game interviews just got me thinking....

Please review data. I know, facts stink. They have the highest average ranking in the AP poll of any and all teams.
