Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invite

Mar 9, 2015, 2:43 PM

Playing in a weak field in Aiken, the Clemson men's team finished the first round tied for 7th with Wofford. We also trail GRU Augusta, Idaho, Kennesaw State and Furman.

It really is amazing how fast this team has fallen. I thought we would be on an upswing starting last season and carry into this year with some promising young talent. They seem to be moving in the opposite direction.

It won't be any better next year, either. We lose our best player, Kennerly, and I only see one kid coming in who may be able to help.

Contended for NC for years. Finally won it. Then gpot new facilities and new bus and it has steadily declined. Is he coasting or what is the story? I just looked them up and the team is ranked 32nd. Has the states amature program fallen off. Years ago a college coach told me SC state am program was the best

Penley retired on the job several years ago.

He has got a tuff decision to make. Talked to him several times about it. Dont know if he will pull the trigger or not.

Watched them in the Midwest Regionals last year and they looked promising with the young talent. Talked with several players and parents. Everyone seemed to be upbeat about this year. I believe they finished in the top 3 and was leading through the first and second rounds. Maybe it will turn around soon. Need at least one spring sport to do well.

pretty uninformed post, honestly.

I guess you noticed they came back to lead the tourney with a very strong second round. Also, this tournament is not a weak field. The GRU Augusta team you are obviously not familiar with is formerly Augusta State and formerly the 2 time defending national champion before Alabama's reign. Clemson, South Carolina, Augusta State, Virginia, USC Aiken and Furman is not a weak field.
Clemson has recruited fine, they just have some kids not playing very well right now. Cody could have gone anywhere in the country, Langdale is a stud on this course he just didn't play as well as he can today. Carson Young didn't make the line up for this tournament and he was the best and most complete high school golfer I have seen since Jonathan Byrd.
They haven't played as well as they would like recently but they haven't fallen of the map totally.
