Clemson Snow Pictures

Jan 14, 2022, 10:52 AM

Heading up to Clemson this weekend with the fam to handle some personal business. We'll be staying at The Abernathy til Monday. Bringing cameras and filters. If we capture some cool pics, I'll post them for you here.

Awesome, I'd like to put in an order for a time lapse picture from when the snow starts to when it ends. Please angle it in the direction that the sun rises.

huge snowstorm that hit South Carolina in 1972. I was at home in the middle of the state on a weekend when it hit, and the State Troopers closed the roads to everything but Emergency Vehicles until the following Wednesday. Once the roads were reopened, I still had a 3 plus hour drive to get back to Clemson. The Profs refused to give me a Papal Dispensation about any of it, claiming I should have been able to get back earlier.

I actually drove one of our big farm tractors out to Highway 301, over the snow which was about a foot and a half deep, with drifts much higher. That is how I KNEW the roads were closed. Prior to being told that, I actually had a plan to have that tractor tow my car to 301, where the snow had been mostly plowed away, and go on to Clemson from that point. The troopers told me if I tried that, they would just turn me right around.

So, unlike Joe Pinner, I have no fondness for snow, Yanquis can have it all they want.

I got caught in that one near Sumter. The Nat. Guard brought us to the armory in an OPEN troop carrier. I had a nice warm blanket wrapped around me. I was 22 at the time. I made the mistake of peeking out and across from me was an old couple and their teeth were chattering. Since chivalry is not dead, i gave them my blanket so that I could sit there with MY teeth chattering...Ah, youth...T sure do miss it.

1972 was my Freshman year (or should I say Freshperson year).

I remember taking food trays from Harcome and using it to slide down one of the meny hills of the dikes around Lake Hartwell.

One of my high school / Clemson mates had stayed in

Jan 14, 2022, 6:13 PM

Clemson that weekend, and did the same thing. Except, he took his lunch tray down the hill at the Amphitheater. Over a big drop off at the bottom. Result was a badly broken, multi-pinned ankle that was in a huge cast by the time I finally made it back that Wednesday. I think I got the better end of that deal overall.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like to think, even back then, I knew my limitations.

Jan 15, 2022, 9:06 AM

Athlete, I was NOT. I probably would have chosen more of a "bunny slope" than the Amphitheatre to slide down on!

The long hill from Earle Hall down to the big student parking lot would have been the place to do it!

In 1965- 66 when I attended most Clemson students got home by thumbing. Could you imagine students thumbing their way home now. Of course most students lived in the state of SC at that time. I lived in Chesnee SC

Jan 14, 2022, 8:06 PM [ in reply to I am still irritated at some Clemson professors over the ]

The snow storm that crossed the Southeastern US from February 9th to February 11th, 1973, brought a record breaking snowfall to South Carolina. Snow fell for approximately 24 hours. The heaviest snowfall was 24 inches measured in Rimini. About 30,000 tourists were stranded on the state's highways.Feb 9, 2020...

It started snowing early Fri afternoon and didn't stop until after dark Sat night...heavy snow...there was 19 inches in my front yard in Columbia...we had a snowball fight with my next door neighbor Fri night...what fun...the closer you got to I-95 the deeper it got... thousands stranded on I-95

I remember that one. It snowed up to the bumper of my Dodge Dart(first car I ever owned). I was helping Coach Jones of Chesnee High get some JV BB players home from Dorman High where we had finished a tournament. Almost never got home from Spartanburg to Chesnee up Hwy 221 that night.

The old scoreboard is gone and the new one hasn’t been started at least as of Monday if this week. The east end of the stadium is wide open - but Williamson Road is closed in front of the stadium.

Based on the artist renderings I’ve seen if the new one it is going to be HUGE. As wide as the grass on the hill.

I think the storm you are thinking of was in Feb. '73. There were 14 to 20 inches of snow from the midlands to the coast. At Clemson, we did not receive any rain or snow. The big snow back then was the 9 3\4 inches of snow we receive the Thursday afternoon after Spring Break. Great weekend for everyone except the idiots that decided to slide down the walk-way behind the Amp. and ran into the cement benches on trays from Harcombe.

duty in September 1972, with eight months active service remaining at Ft. Jackson.

Those three years were in northern Germany and in the mountains on the DMZ in Korea, and I vowed to never cross the Mason-Dixon line again after freezing my behind off in those cold weather areas. Then, that blizzard hit S.C. in February 1973, with snow up to the bumper on my car, and I thought, "WTH?"

To top that off my son eventually married a gal from Pittsburgh, moved up there, and I made annual visits for years while the grands were little. All of that kind of blew my M-D line thinking to shreds! lol.

December or January’69 or ‘70(depending on which month). We were on bivouac and went to sleep in those canvas pup tents and woke up at daybreak to several inches of snow- they made us continue the schedule & my group had to cross an open area which had ice creaking under the snow as we crossed. We were not sure if we were on a pond & were afraid we would break through
