Using espn data. That’s as far back as it goes. So by qbr ranking dj’s year was the 2nd worst for a clemson qb in the last 18 yrs with only Stoudt’s performance ranking lower.
I’ve heard the question asked, what would deshaun or trevor have done with last year’s team . . . But . . . What about some of these other guys? I mean I don’t think you can say the Proctor, Harper, Parker teams had more talent. Those guys ranked better than DJ. Also, how about Kelly Bryant? What could he have done? And what would everyone say about KB if there hadn’t been Deshaun and Trevor? He’d be a legend right? He’s the only non trevor-deshaun qb to win the acc since forever ago . . . Feel like maybe in light of last year’s struggles KB’s accomplishments merit a little more consideration than they get
Also, in Stoudts case, the poor kids arm and shoulder were held together by Duct tape and shoe strings. Dude was badly injustice and played through it because we had no one else. So in my mind DJs stats are by far the worst in 20+ years, or at least Will Proctor bad. I'm hoping that they are able to work with what he does well (As in very little RPO) and hopefully help him thrive. Go Tigers!
Thanks for presenting the data. You are right - KB was not all that bad - he just looked much worse than he actually was because he followed Deshaun and had Trevor competing against him. He may not have had the best throwing arm but he was effective because of his game management skills and running. KB simply had problems against teams (mainly Alabama) where passing became essential. He even led us to a win at A&M (although Trevor also played in that game).
Oh man i almost forgot about that. That was the game where they were mocking the chain, pretending to put it on each other after big plays. Couldn’t believe what i was seeing when they started doing that. Tigers humiliated the canes the night
Proctor to play over Charlie Whitehurst..."While Charlie might be a better pro prospect, Will fits our offense better" was a direct quote from Mickey Plyler...And even an injured Whitehurst was considerably better
Thanks for pointing out the obvious. The offense didnt improve last season until we abandoned the passing game and were fortunate to play teams we could run on. It had nothing to do with the QB improving. Spring game looked like more of the same.
You completely lost me with thinking Kelly Bryant would be a legend without having Watson or Lawrence around.
Kelly Bryant was a good QB for Clemson. Our coaches tailored the offense to fit him very well. He also had an OL that was far and away better than what DJ had in front of him last season. A better offensive gameplan and Ol were huge advantages for Bryant compared to last season.
Bryant also had McCloud, Cain and Renfrow to throw the ball to with a young and emerging Rodgers and Higgins to sprinkle in here and there.
Obviously that starting trio is not exactly in the mix for best ever at Clemson but it was way better than what we had running routes last season, and it was actually built to have a guy at each position instead of having 3 of the exact same guy playing 3 different positions like we had last season.
Bryant had a 3rd down safety valve in Renfrow. Bryant had a deep threat with Cain. Bryant had a guy who excelled in the screen game and YAC in McCloud. DJ had none of those things last season.
Finally, Bryant had some mobility which made the defense stay honest and gave him much bigger windows to throw the ball.
Agree on the comparisons of OL, WR, and qb mobility . . . As far as KB being a legend in the absence of trevor and deshaun, I get how it might be hard to see. Totally agree he had a great team around him. If Trevor hadn’t come along, KB with that team probably would’ve won 2 acc titles and gone to 2 playoffs . . . And if not for deshaun (and trevor), no other clemson qb would be able to say that.
I think that if not for those two guys, we might all be saying on here “man, i miss when we had kelly.” You’re right that the offensive talent was better in 2017, but I think we finish last year with a better record if Bryant is taking snaps. Steadier, fewer mistakes, better athlete
Moreso that it might have been the worst year in clemson history. Stoudt’s ranking was worse in 2014, but he barely played half the season, and watson’s ranking was 2nd that year. So you put those two guys’ numbers together and they easily surpass 2021 dj.
In fact, 2014 is a great example of just how much qb play impacts the rest of the team. Everything else was equal. But Stoudt was one of the worst qb’s in the country and Deshaun was one of the best. With Stoudt, Clemson got creamed by uga, eked out wins against bc and Louisville, and lost to ga tech. With watson, they crushed unc, nc state, and usc, and they took #1 fsu to overtime on the road. There’s been a lot of talk about how the team around dj just wasn’t up to the standard. I’m saying the biggest reason for that is . . . QB play.
Secondary point, Kelly Bryant’s talent was and is underappreciated.
Yeah. He had a tough year there. Ranked 64th in qbr. Was a bad situation there with sanctions announced after he committed and a lame duck staff.
Am i giving kb a little more slack than i am dj? Yeah. I think he showed for a full season at clemson that he was better than his performance at mizzou. He absolutely benefited from the team around him at clemson and the coaches. No denying that. I really can’t imagine him struggling like dj did all last year, though. And i think he would be much more heralded if not for our amazing success at qb immediately before and after his tenure.
Thanks. That is what I was getting at. Same team in 2014, but one QB was awful, and the other was excellent. Results on the field obviously showed the stark contrast even though the rest of the players are the same.
We will see the same difference this year depending on whether we have a decent QB or a stinko.
