Clemson off student housing

Jan 22, 2018, 11:39 AM

These new places that have popped up over the past couple of years look nicer than most starter homes after college. They also seem to come with a hefty monthly rent. I wasnt slumming it when I was at Clemson in the early 2000's but I tried to find the most affordable places to live since my folks were put me and my bro through about the same time (2 year gap). Was just curious to what was out there now and they look like something u would see in NY. One in particular, The gallery at Clemson. Stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops, custom cabinetry, all kinds of amenities. Its like you never left home. No way I could have afforded to live in most these places if I were at Clemson now.

The sad part is that none of these kids can afford this type of housing on entry level salaries. Many of them are also driving $45,000 vehicles. I remember thinking that a $50,000 entry level engineering salary was going to be great. Boy was a I wrong. To keep that kind of lifestyle after college is going to require mom and dad to continue paying for all that coddling they are doing while these kids are in college.

I blame the parents that do the coddling***

A lot of the newer apartments in Clemson run at least $700 a month. Plus utilities, wifi, tv, etc. Pretty penny I'd say

I had both Johnstone C (C-821, my freshman year, 1962-63) and Johnstone F (F-224, my senior year) experiences. Lived off-campus in a private room my middle two years, across the highway from and near the soccer field), and thoroughly enjoyed that time.

Two years in D3 90-92. And the cleaning ladies would mop around your feet while you were taking a crap. Those were fun times.

Johnstone D? I see you were living large with the rich folk. Try Johnstone F1 and the constant urine smell.

the Gallery is actually cheap

Jan 22, 2018, 12:45 PM

shows $490 for a room in a 3 bedroom.

places like 114 Earle or Campus View are up closer to $900 for a room. for that money, I'd hope to be on King Street

i stayed in a house on pendleton rd my junior year. 3 br 2 ba, rent was 240 a person. Thats cheap. But there might have been vines growing through a window and the front door i think was made out of reinforced ply wood. We did have a big game type room, just had to keep a bb gun to the side to kill any mouse that tried to nible on the scarps of food left on the floor, but it was still a good time.

What’s the new place near the reserve that looks like small houses?

Are you talking about the pier? They have one bedroom tiny houses up to 3 bedroom cottages. My daughter just moved into one of the tiny houses. About 300 square feet, full kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom. Includes a washer and dryer. About 750 per month plus electricity. All other utilities including cable and Wi-Fi included. Still cheaper than what we were paying to put her in a dorm at uncc.

I think you might be referring University Cottages. The ones that were built last year right on 93 across from Ingles?

Yep. That’s it. Thanks. I’ve been curious about what they look like inside ever since I drove by them for thanksgiving.

These places were all way too expensive. You can live at Harts Cove in a 3-4 bedroom and pay $400 a month give or take. No thanks.

Eh... It's amazing what a little staging and a professional photographer can do. Once you get past the medium end amenities these look to be very ordinary apartments that are actually pretty small. The granite countertops and stainless steel appliances are alright, but the cabinetry looks pretty cheap, and the floors are vinyl. One of the listed amenities is "living room accent wall". That's just a wall painted a different color, how is that an amenity????

What happened to UV and their $345/mo rent?***

You missed out if you never were a married student living in one of the pre-fabs! $30 per month and pure luxury! Of course all those free football tickets and park in your own driveway were the best amenities!
