Clemson losing a close one Saturday night might be the best thing

Oct 11, 2022, 2:59 PM

FSU would jump way up in the rankings helping our schedule and the ACC.

We would still control our own destiny and would make the playoffs if we won out.

Gamecocks are funny...

Oct 11, 2022, 3:12 PM

They finally beat a team without highschool bleachers as the stadium seating, and they get all cocky. Back to reality for them this Saturday.

Re: Gamecocks are funny...

Clemson can afford no losses. Can't give the playoff committee anything to discredit our Tigers from being in the playoff.

Half of the season has been played and there is still a real chance that either TCU or Ok State and either USC or UCLA could emerge from their conferences as undefeated conference champs.

Assume for even a moment that Bama is able to get through their schedule unbeaten or with a single loss. Then assume they find a way to beat UGA when they get healthy in the SCECG. That would mean 2 SEC teams, Ohio State, and 1 other team chosen from Clemson, and winners of the Pac 12 or Big 12. A loss on Clemson's resume could kill our chances.

Lot of football to play and usually it all plays itself out in the end. Unlikely Bama makes it through and they may not be good enough to beat UGA this year. Even more unlikely is an undefeated Pac 12 or Big 12 Champ but there is a chance.

I would rather not have a loss and find our Tigers sitting at #5 after the final playoff rankings come out in December. We need every team on our schedule to win and keep winning. Heck, we even need the coots to win and get in the Top 25 so we can skull drag an SEC team at the end of the year.

Teams will fall - I don't see a PAC or BIG12 undefeated team - will knock each other out. Right now, as painful as it is to say, Ohio State has looked the best - Alabama and Georgia are both certainly beatable this year - and will have Tennessee to play.

Just need to win out.

If we go undefeated, finish #5, and don't make the CFP, then we simply win our bowl game and do like UCF where we get some obscure ranking organization, that no one has ever heard of, to vote us as National Champions and life will be good again.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we finish undefeated, we’re in ... no way around it.

Oct 11, 2022, 5:29 PM

We will have two Top-15 wins on our resume and we will have beaten Notre Dame in South Bend (a solid win regardless) ...

An unbeaten Clemson is a sure-fire CFP participant. And maybe higher than the #4 seed.

The only game you might lose and still make the playoff is Notre Dame only because they are Notre Dame. We may still win the division if we lose, but no way ,no how do we get back to # 4 using your argument.

Let’s enjoy this season. It reminds me of 2015. I remember Dabo saying something like, “Let’s see how far we go this season because next year, we are going to be really good” and CU went to the championship game. Turned out to be true. Then 2016 was a blast. Still putting it together for another great run I believe.

We have to win out to get in CFP. We will have two wins over top 15 teams and may beat a top 25 UNCheat team in ACC championship game. Which would put us in the playoffs.

Our current reputation and being in the ACC doesn't provide us the leeway of losing any of our games in a 4 team CFB Playoff in MHO. The 12 game CFB Playoff is the only way we can afford to lose a game & still get in the CFB Playoffs in the future (including this year)!

It might actually be best to win rather than to lose.

But winning and losing are basically the same thing, so it’s kinda 6 one way, half dozen the other.
