Clemson Legacy Admissions

Jan 22, 2018, 11:24 AM

Anyone have any insight as to how much being a double legacy helps with the CU admissions process? My daughter has a very high GPA, top 6% of her class, already has 12 hours of college credit but the SAT and ACT scores are on the lower end of the CU average. She has been accepted by two in-state schools, chose her favorite of those and has been accepted into that school's honor's program (neither is SCar). Originally she was leaning toward attending a smaller school but the last few months has decided that if she is accepted she will definitely attend CU. A couple of her friends with super high SAT scores have received their acceptance letters so she is getting antsy. TIA and Go Tigers!

It doesn't

From what we experienced and others we know, it has no bearing at all.

They are so focused on being a Top 20 academic school, it's all about the SAT.

Now, if you go elsewhere for a year and can transfer in, the SAT doesn't really matter.

How dare Clemson take the best students it possibly can?

If Clemson abandons their commitment to South Carolinians

Jan 22, 2018, 3:51 PM

It matters a great deal.

If they want to be the best school they can be, great. Take the best SAT, GPA, class ranks you can find.

If they want to be public, then honor the vision of TG Clemson and make in state students a priority.

Right now the administration wants both. Clemson is a great school, better than when I went there. I think Clemson needs to let go of the public tag if they want to accomplish these ratings on the backs of out of state students.

Failure to prioritize the education of our state's citizenship while calling yourself a public institution of the state of South Carolina is a farce.

Unfortunately if we lose the public school tag, we don't sniff the top 100.

I don't agree with the direction the University is taking, but I understand the desire to be the best at something. I feel if we continue down this road the passion for Clemson University and idea of the Clemson family will be watered down, and Clemson will be just another University without a sense of uniqueness that we have today. Or, maybe it's already gone, maybe for ten or twenty years now.

I love Clemson and always will. I hate to see it become something it was never supposed to be.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A few thoughts.

Jan 22, 2018, 6:41 PM

Clemson actually prioritizes in-state students now just as much as it did decades ago. The percentage of in-state versus out-of-state is 2/3 in-state and 1/3 out-of-state. This has been constant for some time. Clemson's enrollment has increased by a few thousand in recent years, but there is also a lot more competition for those seats.

Clemson now receives less than 3% of its funding from the state of South Carolina. The "public" tag is sort of a joke these days. I still feel that Clemson honors Thomas Green Clemson's will, as we place a high priority on SC students, causes, and goodwill. The will never stated that Clemson should lower its standards, or be available to every student in SC. Attending Clemson is not a right, nor should it be.

I would be all for Clemson going private, or at least looking into it more, but it would get dicey because our endowment isn't huge. Plus, how would the land and buildings be transferred? Those are worth a lot, so it's probably not practical to become private.

I'm not sure why you believe that Clemson wouldn't be in the top 100 if we went private. Based on US News & World Report, Clemson is around 60th in terms of national universities (includes both public and private schools).

Finally, I'm not sure why you believe that Clemson accepting the best and brightest somehow changes the culture or the Clemson family. I would be disappointed if Clemson stopped striving to become as great of a version of itself as possible.

Jan 23, 2018, 7:02 AM [ in reply to If Clemson abandons their commitment to South Carolinians ]

The bulk of Clemson students come from instate. Clemson mines some high achievers from other states and there is a purpose. SC industry is growing and needs to be fed with talent rapidly or it will go other states. History shows that students often choose to stay in the state where they went to college. This is an aspect of admissions not talked about yet in this thread.

The Bridge program is a great program if she is dead set on Clemson and does not get straight in to CU. My daughter is in the Bridge program now and was in a similar situation to yours. Her older sister went through Bridge and she is a senior at CU. Our oldest got straight in to CU. Both parents are Clemson grads.

Re: Clemson Legacy Admissions

Jan 22, 2018, 11:45 AM

No bearing. The way the admissions process works at Clemson is quite automated/computer processed. They have certain benchmarks and several "cuts". They look strictly at GPA and SAT/ACT and I believe you are put up against peers and other people in your area. If you don't meet the criteria then you are out. You could have a student with all the extracurriculars and recommendations in the world but if they don't meet that benchmark then they get cut from the admissions process. Hope this helps

Jan 22, 2018, 12:27 PM

Lagacy makes no difference. Would be nice if they didnt give so many spots to out of state applicants though, approx 35% I believe. Its all about the money. They need to be careful. In their push to become a national brand they may alienate the taxpayers of this state and donors. Id be interested to see the % of in-state vs out of state alumni contributing.

It has been 35% since at least the 80's. It may be about money but it isn't new money.

Re: Clemson Legacy Admissions

Jan 23, 2018, 7:11 AM

Agreed, the ratio of instate versus out of state has not changed since I was in school in the 80's and maybe before. I think one thing that has changed is there are more college ready kids in SC than 3-4 decades ago so admissions are more competitive.

There are more legacies now too and double and triple legacies, its not something that differentiates an applicant. There are also so many applicants that there just has to be some objectives cuts based on quantifiable metrics to get it down to a more manageable pool.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is a myth.

Jan 22, 2018, 3:33 PM [ in reply to Re: Clemson Legacy Admissions ]

Clemson has had a roughly 67% in-state, 33% out-of-State ratio for decades. This isn’t new.

Also, Clemson receives less than 3% of its funding from South Carolina, so the term “public institution” doesn’t really mean much in reality. Still, Clemson prioritizes in-state students and it is still a decided advantage for admissions if you are from SC.

Also, every school worth it’s salt has GPA and SAT/ACT cutoffs. Obviously this excludes some very talented and capable students, but that’s the way it is when a lot of top students are interested in going to Clemson.

It may have been that way since the 80's but tuition wasnt as out of control as it is now. I remember reading an article a few years ago and looking up the OOS rates for other public schools in surrounding states and it is substantially lower.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Take it up with your state leaders then.

Jan 22, 2018, 6:42 PM

South Carolina needs to prioritize higher education more. State funding represents a minuscule portion of Clemson's revenue each year. That, coupled with student loans creating an environment where all universities (including Clemson) justified dramatic increases in tuition over the past 10-15 years, created this mess.

ZERO.

Jan 22, 2018, 12:56 PM

I will repeat. ZERO. Even in the same major it's irrelevant. My brother's kid with a 4.0 applying in the same major as he, me, and my wife all three graduated, could not get any traction with Clemson. If you have a 1500 SAT they will talk to you. If not, sol. I talked with the department head and he indicated that the colleges have zero input. It all goes through admissions and all they are worried about is that average SAT score and the top-20 ranking. VERY short sided. Now bro's kid is about to graduate from another school, so where is his money going to go? Probably not to Clemson. Her's certainly will not. They had the chance to cultivate a line of Clemson grads but were not interested. And yes, it still ticks me off and has definitely impacted my estate planning, as well and my Dad's that sent to kids there.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What were those ap classes?

Jan 22, 2018, 1:00 PM

A lot of kids graduate with so called college credit but clemson doesn't recognize social geography as a credit.

Did she get 4s and 5s on the chemistry and calculus AP exams.

They also look at the schhol. I was 11 outta 330 when I went to palmetto boystate. I was sitting at the diner table and all the guys were bragging about thier top 5 class rankings. I found out later that there were only lime 50 kids in their class.

GPA is also not the same as Q&A WHICH takes into account the toughness of the class.

I ended up #14 in my class and only like 4 of the kids ahead of me got into clemson. 10 of those kids had higher gpa's than mean but never took anything higher than college prep classes. While they were getting a's in algebra ii, I was gerring b's in calculus.

Extracurricular activities played a roll also. I was in every club you could be in except french and band, lettered 4 times, and had a part time job. I put all that junk on my college app and then wrote an essay on my high school drop out parents

Too many people look at gpas and class rankings and that just isn't enough now adays.

I have a nice and nephew that got into clemson with low sats. They graduated from greenville techs high school program so they had almost a year of actual tech credits.

Has no importance now. In fact, they like putting legacies and in states in the Bridge as they feel like they will accept it. However, the bridge is a very good program. A huge % of grads now went through the Bridge.

Isn't there a restriction on the number of out-of-state students that can be admitted? I seem to recall at one time it was no more than one-third of the entering class. Can someone verify?

I read recently the percent of out of state students at USC is much greater than 33%. With less money coming from the state coffers to the universities, some schools have been forced to accept more out of state students to benefit their financial situation with the additional out of state tuition.

Little trick: apply for certain majors then switch

Jan 22, 2018, 3:29 PM

This is one of the only ways to "fool" the system. Certain majors are much more difficult to get accepted into than others. For example, any engineering major is very selective, but if you apply to something less popular, you can get accepted and then change majors once you get there. Had a friend that applied for Turf Management in 2013 and got in then immediately switched to business before they ever even took a class.

A female probably has a higher chance to get into a science-based major...

This is probably too late now, but make sure that you understand that there are loads of students that transfer into Clemson after their freshman year. If she truly wants to go to Clemson, then either accept the bridge program, if offered, or go somewhere else and make sure she takes classes that will be accepted as transfer credits at Clemson then transfer.

As someone who recently went through the Clemson admission process, I can tell you that they are trying to crack down on kids doing this. I did not personally do it, but was told by an admissions representative that restrictive transfer caps are put on selective majors (Engineering, Health Science, Sports Comm, etc.)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What major is she applying for?

Jan 22, 2018, 6:02 PM

As a current student, Iknow a lot of people who got accepted with below average SAT scores (1150 area), but those people are in-state and have applied to certain majors. For example: engineering, architecture, and nursing have higher standards than the averages you would see online because they are simply more competitive for applicants. I would say most agriculture, business, PRTM, or communications (not graphic comm) majors tend to be more lenient towards applicants. Smaller majors are also best avoided (usually very specific fields) because they also have a limited number of seats.

To answer your question, no. Being a double legacy will most likely not be a deciding factor for your daughter’s admission. I am a legacy and grew up a huge fan of the university, but it’s fair to understand why Clemson doesn’t factor being a legacy that much (if it were up to me, I would decrease the size of the school to 15,000 and require in-state applicants to do alumni interviews to help true clemson people get accepted).

Being a legacy does, however, help prospective students be accepted into the bridge program. If your daughter has her heart set on Clemson and only gets admission to the bridge program, she will have zero regrets doing that. I wish her well on these next few weeks of hearing back from colleges!

It helps I just don’t know how much. You can always appeal the decision, best done in person if able. On the chance she is not successful I am sure she would be lock for the bridge program. My daughter was in a very similar situation a few years back and reluctantly, at the time, accepted a bridge program spot. She ended up loving it and went on to graduate. Said she was really glad she made that decision.
