Clemson hoops/ACC standings, halfway through conference play

Jan 29, 2022, 10:17 PM

ACC Standings

1. Miami 8-2
2. Duke 7-2
3. Notre Dame 7-2
4. UNC 7-3
5. Wake Forest 7-4
6. FSU 6-4
7. Virginia 6-5
8. Louisvlle 5-6
9. Syracuse 4-6
10. Clemson 3-6
11. Boston College 3-6
12. Pittsburgh 3-6
13. Va. Tech 3-7
14. N.C. State 3-8
15. Ga. Tech 2-7

Couple of Thoughts

- Clemson has played the top 3 teams on the road with close losses at Miami & Duke.
- Best win was at UVA. Other wins were over bottom dwellers.
- Clearly the BC loss was terrible.
- I do think the team should be better than 3-6 in conference...but you are what your record says you are. The Miami and BC losses were both games in which Clemson had the lead practically the entire game. Those were brutal losses.

- Looking at the games below....Tigers are about to play 6 games in a 2 week span...most of those against the top half of the conference. There are more home games left than road games....so we'll see if that helps. There is a soft ending to the season...but this team will have to play at a high level just to break even during the next couple of weeks.

Upcoming Games:

2/2 FSU
2/5 at GT
2/8 UNC
2/10 Duke
2/12 Notre Dame
2/15 at FSU

2/19 at Louisville
2/23 Wake Forest
2/26 at Boston College
3/2 Ga. Tech
3/5 Va. Tech

Clemson is 11th with loss to BC. So, either way you win them, we have to go at minimum 7-4 over our remaining games. That leaves us at 10-10 in conference and 18-13 overall.

Short of a possible run in ACC tourney where we're in championship game, we won't get a bid at 18-13 10/10 league. Should definitely get us a high seed in nit. I think this year ACC would be lucky to get 4 teams in. Possible 5 at most with a play in game. Anything is possible.

Imo, we have to go 9-2 in our remaining games to get a bid.

Unlike most seasons recently when it has taken winning in the teens to make it to the NCAA tournament, this year it will probably take winning 20 or more games just to have a chance.

BC did lose to Pitt though….

3 way tie for 10th at the moment….not sure who exactly emerges from that as the 10.
Clearly we are way behind the top 7 or so…

There seem to be 3 elite teams in league play, and then another 3 very good teams. But none are so good that they don't have flaws, like Miami's two losses at the hands of FSU.

Tonight an exciting Wake team went on the road and got pounded in the Carrierdome worse than Clemson did.

This is business as usual in the ACC. When Boeheim and Girard go off at home,, they don't lose. I wonder how many expert fans believe the WF coach has lost his team now just because they got blown out on the road?

Back when the ACC was actually good in basketball, a top 8-9 finish ( along with 18-20 wins) was good enough to guarantee a spot in the dance. Not so much these days. This is the weakest I’ve seen the league in my lifetime.

I could care less about a national tournament this year. NIT or NCAA. If we can go toe to toe with Miami and Duke, then we can make a deep run or possibly even win the ACC tournament. The players just have to believe and play every game like they did at Duke the other night. It can be done. But the problem is people don’t believe it can be done.

BC loss terrible. Yes. Their record now same as ours. We are playing better and schedules are unbalanced yet that speaks to how "good" we are. Playing better is nice only if you beat some people.

At this point a tourney win

Jan 30, 2022, 9:46 AM

Is the only way into the big dance, pretty much. Obviously you want to avoid having to play the extra game by being bottom 6. If Duke or UNC ends up the 1 seed you’ll want to try to get into that 8/9 game to get them early while they’re rusty or lack motivation. A live by the 3 mentality and depth can help in the tournament format, so it’s not completely out of the question bc of how bad the league is this year.

Go Tigers!

Based on the first half results, it is illogical to expect a different result in the second half, we will probably go three and six in the second half, and finish at 6-12 in conference play. You are what your record says you are, and playing well against a pretty good Duke team doesn't mean diddly squat. I’d love to see a miracle turn around and make the NCAA tournament, but this team is very inconsistent and I think 10th place is probably where we will end up. I mean, besides Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech at home, what teams do we realistically think we’re going to beat? Perhaps Boston College on the road? But they beat us at home…UNC at home? Maybe , Louisville? Perhaps. I can also see us losing to both Georgia Tech and Boston College on the road. Then we’ve got to steal a couple home games.

No comment. Standings speak for themselves. We tigers are just so proud. Glad we played SC when they had half a team.

Yeah 9-11 is about the ceiling for this team. maybe 10-10 but that won't be even good enough for the NIT this season. Remember all teams that win their regular season conference but lose in the tournament get an automatic bid to the NIT. There might be just a little 20 teams that get at large bid and we aren't even in the top 70 teams now.
