But "more military heritage than us" is a subjective metric, at best.

....from Uncle Bill wiki....
Citadel, VMI for sure.
Texas A&M.
Rensallaer (sp?) Polytechnical Institue - 'RPI' - was a school in upstate NY with a military connection.
Not recalling any others.

If memory serves me correctly Clemson had a very high number of officers in WW 2 and a high number of casualties. Also the Drill Team Pershing Rifles were equaled by none!!

Auburn was a training ground for the confederate army.
Believe like many land grant schools they taught military theory and tactics to enter as an enlisted officer

VT And Texas A&M have the same level.
The difference is, Clemson doesnt emphasize this as much. At VT and TAMU cadets still wear traditional gear and have their own marching bands alongside the normal school marching bands, as well as special ceremonies and pregame rituals involving the cadets.
Clemson doesnt have this, I wish we did. We do have the drill team Company C-4, and the ROTC cadets can purchase block seating but are considered no different than other student groups.
I wish Clemson had more emphasis on military service and our military heritage, like TAMU or VT have, or our own version of the Summerall Guard or something.

Do what? The war eagle is Auburn battle cry not their mascot and never has been. Has a few origin stories most believe about a eagle on the field against a game with Georgia or lsu can't remember which. Auburn has had several names through its life but never combined with any other school didn't become Auburn until last 50-60 years. It was first a private Methodist I think liberal arts school; like CSU. Eastern Alabama college or something like that

War Eagle was a Native American symbol

[ in reply to Re: Clemson as a military school ] |

That was famous in Alabama because of its symbolic prescience in the native tribes in Alabama, even to this day. That's where it comes from.
Also, the only military history Auburn had was being a hospital and training camp for the Confederates. It later featured an ROTC program when it was reformed as Alabama Polytechnic Institute as required by land grant institutions.

Clemson has had the 2nd most combat casualties of any division 1 college. Number 1 belongs to Texas A&M. This is the reason for the memorial outside of the east end zone.

Long and honorable history of Tigers in the military. These days not nearly as many Tigers however, at least not in the Marine Corps. Have met many Citadel and VMI grads, and A&M had an absolute mafia stranglehold. Heck, a barely after the last rounds of the worst battle in Iraq war, the Aggies all got together for an Aggie yell (BN CO was a Aggie) at the Battain CP. I honestly dnot recall more than 2-3 CU grads in the Corps.

Well, aside from the obvious reason for not many (college) graduates going into the Marines... (you know I'm kidding, jarhead! Love you like a brother!!), probably the main reason is that Clemson only offers Army and Air Force ROTC, don't you think?
BTW: my ALL TIME favorite Aggie joke:
What's the easiest way to spot an Aggie? You see his class ring when he picks his nose.
Back in the day, very few briefings, classes, or seminars ever began without an Aggie or an aviator joke!
AIM HIGH!
GO TIGERS!!!

Good one AF Would you believe I knew a guy who made it up to Major in the USMC who was an AF Academy grad? Great school as I had several friends back in Sumter who were grads, but to go from there to the Corps? For what it's worth he was completely inept and never given any real leadership responsibility. Career staffer.

That IS a twist for a 'zoomie' to go into the Marine Corps! But for him to underachieve? Well, what can you say?
You're from Sumter, eh? Ever hear of MG George L. Mabry? He went to PC and was an (Army) Infantry Officer. As a LTC, won the Medal of Honor during WWII, taking out German armor, crew served weapons and infantry single handed, pretty much saving his battalion. He also partnered with GEN Abrams after the war, in coming up with the idea and design of the Armored Personnel Carrier, as a way to protect infantry in combat. He was from Sumter. Now, HE was a GREAT American!
While he was Commander, US Army South (Central & South America), I drove for him when I was stationed in the Army in Panama from '73-'75 - before getting out in '76 and going to Clemson on the GI Bill, where I joined AFROTC, and got my AF commission.
Take care Jarhead! Maybe we can meet up at a ball game, tail gate, etc., some day, and I'll treat you to a cold beverage, or two?
GO TIGERS!!!!

I never actually met him, although I knew his brother Buford from showing horses with him. Gen. Mabry was a legend in the community. As far as games, it's always a pleasure to meet fellow fans! Met and sat with one during 56-7 actually as I had an extra ticket and had a great time. Go Tigers!

A little Clemson history....
Apr 13, 2017, 10:51 AM
|
|
While watching the excellent WWI documentary on American Experience last night in this, the 100th anniversary of US entry into that conflict, I was reminded of a bit of Clemson history some may not be aware of:
the ENTIRE Clemson senior class of 1917 volunteered for military duty---to a man. Of course, not every Class of '17 alum made it into combat, but numerous medals were awarded those brave souls for gallantry....including silver stars and croix de guerres. Also, of course, there were some who returned home wounded.....and some who didn't return home at all.
Clemson has a remarkable and noteworthy history in the military.

Outside of the academies

Citadel, VMI, and TAM are the only true ones that come to mind. There are several other small ones like Valley Forge but they don't have the reputation as these three. TAM takes a hit in my book since it's corp is mixed in with the regular students. Citadel and VMI are the two non-government military academy power houses imo. Citadel is slowing turning into a TAM type school though but has a more profound history than VMI (ie. Star of the West)

VMI's overnight march to participate in the battle at New Market is commemorated each year with a roll call of Cadets killed there and the full corp passing in review.
