CJ Spiller looks like a bad hire

Dec 7, 2022, 3:15 PM

With our RB depth, guys should be lining up to come here. They'd get playing time.

Bama, UGA, and OSU sign 5 star RBs every year that sit on the bench. Please don't use the excuse that we can't sign someone because they'll be behind Shipley and Mafah.

This is legitimately concerning that we can't get one high level player to sign.

was such a huge deal when Spiller himself decided to come here. And, let's face it, he was almost a Unicorn.

If you develop a GREAT offensive line, ANY quality running back will look good. The best running back in the world will look mediocre behind a bad offensive line at times. Even ETN had to work hard for his yards here, and neither he NOR the line was what you call "mediocre".

If I had to pick, I would go for the Top Quality O-Line players AND COACHES, and get some able bodied running backs to run behind them that do not have to have a galaxy of stars beside their name. That is pretty much the model the NFL is going to.

Dec 7, 2022, 3:26 PM

Just speculating, but how many 5 star OL recruits does Bama, UGA and OSU sign each year vs Clemson. A dominant OL can make an RB. I feel like Spiller may have been the best college RB in history when you compare the talent at OL that he had (compared to the best OL teams in the country)

Dec 7, 2022, 3:37 PM

the 5 star backs in the past like the programs you mentioned. Unlike JK and our basketball team though, I don't think past failures to do something means you shouldn't continue to try. I do think it might have been more difficult to recruit with Pace being on roster as now you had someone already well positioned in the program not getting reps. I'm not covering for CJ Spiller, to me the jury is still out. I'm saying something about our program keeps it from happening. Poor blocking? Negative recruiting? Lack of heisman trophy? I don't know what it is. Hoping CJ can turn it around. Me personally I would give him another 18 months to 2 years before I gave up on him but that's me.

Re: And so it begins…

Dec 8, 2022, 7:52 AM

Ever since the CEOs started showing up we've had whipping boys presented. CJ has already had a taste of venom . Last year he was running off the good ones, failing to develop the remaining talent and wholly unsuccessful recruiting.

I'm glad we have the CEOs on here. They keep me humble and enlightened.

Re: He needs two home run RB recruits in the next cycle

Dec 8, 2022, 8:13 AM

When have we really ever had a homerun recruit for running back? We don’t get a lot of 5 star backs. Spiller, Bellamy, Bowman, Ship. That’s all I can think of since 08 and only 2 of them made it longer than a full season. ETN was our last recruit that cycle and nobody knew who he was. Wayne was a 4 star.

Dec 7, 2022, 4:28 PM

Exactly. Great example is Jarvis Green #4 out of Dutch Fork HS in Irmo, SC. He is a 3 or 4 star depending on who grading. Over 3000 all purpose yards, 41 touchdowns in route to State 5A championship. Coach Spiller told him that he has him #3 RB choice. Outstanding young man and lifelong Clemson fan. I know the family and Jarvis would fit the program.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow - I wouldn't call him heavily recruited

Dec 7, 2022, 5:15 PM

Not saying he's not a great guy and may be able to make it in college. But this is pulling at strings a bit. I say CJ is doing an excellent job as position coach. Our RB's run hard and with tons of heart and effort. Recruiting will come along (success breeds success).

I disagree that players should be lining up to come to Clemson. Why would you come here to be a third string running back? Shipley and Mafah are firmly is established as one and two.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wouldn’t go as far as bad hire but…

Dec 7, 2022, 7:12 PM

He needs some help recruiting and developing a board. It seems from the outside looking in that he has too narrow a board and needs to cast a wider net. Just my opinion.

I think we have been good with running backs the past several years. We all should have learned by now that star rating doesn’t mean ####. Look at all the 5 star qbs we have had sitting on the bench or starting and not panning out

Dec 8, 2022, 9:56 AM

So many disingenuous fans commenting on this post with the "we've never been great at recruiting RBs"

Who Tony Elliot signed as RB coach

Demarckus Bowman, 5 star, #20
Tavien Feaster, 5 star, #29
Will Shipley, 5 star, #32
Tyshon Dye, 4 star, #165
Phil Mafah, 4 star, #188
Travis Etienne, 4 star, #213
Chez Mellusi, 4 star, #241
Lyn-J Dixon, 4 star, #258
Adam Choice, 4 star, #261
Wayne Gallman, 4 star, #312
Kobe Pace, 3 star, #451
Mikey Dukes, 3 star, #927

Who CJ Spiller has signed as RB coach

Keith Adams Jr, 3 star, #1462 (last resort)
He's currently after Jamarius Haynes, unranked (last resort)

Spiller has been pathetic. He has missed on 10 RB recruits and will likely sign a last resort RB in back to back classes. We can only hope that we utilize the portal once Shipley and Mafah leave. Because RB depth is going to be a serious problem. We're going to be one injury away from having a walk-on, and two last resort RBs as serious contributors. That's embarrassing.
