Chevy Tahoe lulz

Sep 21, 2015, 2:29 PM

So Greenr and Wife are without kids and off work on Friday. We bout to head to the outlets to do some Fall shopping for the kids when we realize they aren't open yet. Well, we have been discussing purchasing a newer vehicle with an accessible thrid row. The Pilot has a third row, but to be honest, it is inaccessible for a 4 year old space cadet (aka my daughter) unless you have 10-15 minutes to get in and out of the car. Greenr thinks to himself, there is a Chevy dealership near here, lets go look at cars. The Tahoe fits all our needs and cannot be THAT expensive. Greenr pulls up to Burns Chevrolet and takes a look at the first Tahoe. I did not pay attention to the trim level, etc...but the sticker price was a cool $68,000. MOTHERFUKKER THAT FUKKING CAR IS $68,000. HOW IN THE HAYULL DO YOU PEOPLE AFFORD THESE THINGS? I CANNOT IMAGINE HAVING A $70K VEHICLE THAT IS ALWAYS INTHE SHOP.

I could not locate one that had a 4 in the first digit of the price, so we drove off without talking to anyone. It looked to me that the cheapest Tahoe was $50k there. I looked up used ones and there was an affordable 2011 Tahoe, but it has 190k miles. Welp, guess the Pilot stays in my posession.

So what's the sticker on a new one got to go with anything?

Sep 21, 2015, 2:40 PM

(I'm not arguing that MSRP on em is nuts, but keep in mind, credit is cheap right now....people aren't buying them because they can afford them, they're buying them because they can make the paymenmt on an 84 month loan on one)

I'd go for one like this.....I've seen similar year/condition, with lower miles for sub $30k....you just have to be looking and be ready to jump when you see one.

to unload it, Carmax does give fair pricing in my experience. I am a huge advocate of not using craigslist, too sketchy, and in my experience, most of the people do not intend to buy your vehicle.

But even still, that price on the Tahoe Obed linked seems insane to me.

Gotta disagree with my boy LB1 here........

Sep 21, 2015, 2:48 PM [ in reply to Depends on what you've got, but if you're looking ]

CarMax isn't buying your car based on giving you a fair value and then planning on trading it for a little more.

They're buying it based on a worst case scenario assumption----that your car doesn't sell in 90 days and they have to auction it. With that in mind, they are giving you a price that is BELOW what it would go for at auction.....that's generally rock bottom.

There's a rule with Craigslist....if you post your car there, and it doesn't sell within 10 days, your price is too high. It's about the most accurate litmus test there is right now for car values.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe that is what they're doing, but in three instances

Sep 21, 2015, 2:52 PM

I've seen vehicles end up being sold for at or around what Carmax had offered. There is a convenience factor with it, as well.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

CarMax is like having a 3/10 fugly booty call on speed dial.

Sep 21, 2015, 2:54 PM

You can go out to a bar and look for a 9/10....realistically you could probably expect to land a 6/10.

If you have a bad night though and go home with another 3/10, it doesn't mean that booty call 3/10 is now pretty.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's a certain value associated with being able to

Sep 21, 2015, 3:20 PM [ in reply to carmax will offer jackshit for your car, MUCH better off wit ]

I say if you have a fair exterior, needing attention engine, good interior 2004 Malibu and need rid of it for the down payment on the next car, then take it to Carmax. Should I have asked Toyota to come up more than $100 from the Carmax offer? Probably. I doubt I was going to get much more than the $2100 for it.

Agree completely. Its almost impossible for find a crew cab new pickup for under $45k as well. Some of the #### pickups are in the mid $50k's. What the heck is this world coming to? So I checked out the smaller trucks like a Toyota Tacoma and heck, they are pushing $37k. The most affordable new style Grand Cherokee we've been able to find was a 2011, with 95k miles, 6 cylinder, 2WD, hardly any options for ~$19k. How about nope. Used Honda CRV? Sep 21, 2015, 3:30 PM

For the greenie hippies (75% of the target market), driving one of those just because the biggest mark of shame since the Hummer H2.

The rest of us (who enjoy cars) won't want one when VW applies a recall to all of them that involves basically detuning the engine to power levels not seen since the Cadillac Cimarron diesel.

The only ones left that anyone will want are those serviced by Indy dealers, without the recall done. If you even drive by a VW dealer they'll slap an ECU "upgrade" on it so fast it won't be funny.

Sep 21, 2015, 3:32 PM [ in reply to If that Jetta is a diesel, its value probably just went up ]

if it were. If there is one manufacturer that I think has worse quality than GM, it's VW.

They are about to get raped by the government though. Emission regulation is out of control, they're probably ultimately causing more pollution. I have a new EPA mandated fuel vent that quite literally spits gasoline back into the water/ground.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, has catalytic converters on it

Sep 21, 2015, 4:21 PM

First year they started doing it, apparently. Of course, I guess I am turning two props, but I don't know how much of a difference that makes.

because used ones aren't much cheaper - they don't lose value, and you can't hardly find a used one that is what you really want (so many options/aftermarket stuff).

My logic was that I might as well buy new to get the exact features I wanted, plus get all the warranties and such that comes with a new one.

You almost never see dealer ads for Jeep Wranglers - why is that?

Don't need to. They sell regardless of marketing.***

You could get a couple year old one for the mid 30's

But since gas got cheap, the ones for sale have a ton of miles on them. I've had a 2007+ (new body style) Tahoe and Yukon and got them reasonable - used. They were Ok, but they were both plagued with trsnamission/driveline noises.

I'm still battling with GMC over my lemon law POS sierra. I wanted out of it completely, but they've countered. We'll see what happens.

Pricing on them started getting crazy in the early 2000's

and really took off with the intro of the last generation, in 2006 or so. My theory is that people think Escalades are status symbols, but they can't afford them. People also think that Escalades are just fancy Tahoes/Yukons, and they're right. Thus you've had the trickle-down status symbol effect.

My family has had Suburban's since 1995.

We're clearly high class citizens. My brother still drives the last one we have that is a 99 with 235k miles on it.

first in the early 90's.

That's where my theory comes from.....I've seen the MSRP on his Suburbans go up massively as the public perception of these changed from utilitarian tow vehicles/kid haulers to bling bling.

His loaded 1999 one was out the door for less than $40k. Last one in 2011 was almost $70.

The 95 was the last vehicle my dad ever bought new

Sep 21, 2015, 3:40 PM

we had a 98 and 99 at the same time until the 98 died at some ungodly amount of miles. The 99 is still kicking. He loves the way the new ones look, but would never spend that kind of money on one. He's currently trying to find a truck for around 5k to replace the 94 dodge ram farm truck. He wants a 4 door though and doesn't understand that what he wants does not exist at the price he wants to pay. My 04 is the newest car any of us drive.
