Charleston Seafood places...Help From You locals and Regular

Apr 6, 2021, 12:38 AM

Visitors. I want to eat seafood several times while I'm down here with my Daughter and 10 yr. Grandson. TIA

Providing they are still opening ,and seating people, try Hyman's on Meeting Street ,downtown. Best shrimp I have ever had. Might want to call ahead to check out seating because it is not a big resturant like a Red Lobster.
The other place is Gilligan's (3 locations) .It's more of a family seafood place like a Red Lobster, but the selection is better, the portions are pretty good and prices if I remember are not bad either.

I get it - Hymans is touristy, but the food and service has been good every time I've been. Of course there are better options, especially if you're willing to spend more $$$, but Hymans is still a good bet for families, IMHO. I don't get the hate. Hank's is probably my favorite, and Fleet Landing is good too.

I don't think Hymans is bad or anything like that. I just think there are places to go that are better without that long wait.

I agree about Hyman's. I know it's right down in the middle of all the tourist spots and is full of tourists but I've had some good, fresh seafood there. If you're already wandering around the market it's convenient. If it's convenient to head to Bowen's island then yeah, that's a great place.

Apr 6, 2021, 9:42 AM

I agree. It’s like Applebee’s for seafood. Not bad but not that great either. Over the years, it’s become more touristy too. Pretty much everything downtown has become tourist traps, thanks in part to the cruise ships. The upscale restaurants are good, but not exactly for kids and pretty expensive.
For great local seafood, go off the beaten path. Mt. Pleasant and Shem Creek have great restaurants. Bowen’s Island is great. Never been, but have heard good things about Hanks and The Wreck. My kids do like Paiges Okra Grill and they have a large variety of food. Great breakfast and awesome Bloody Marys. Call ahead or get there early, if you plan to go.
Also, not exactly seafood, but the Tattooed Moose is fun. Great sandwiches and French fries. They have several locations in Charleston area. Hope y’all have a great time!

Apr 6, 2021, 7:09 PM [ in reply to Re: Charleston Seafood places...Help From You locals and Regular ]

Mt P:
The Wreck is interesting. No frills. Fried or Broiled kind of place. Great location. They can run out of shrimp if you’re there too late. It’s because it’s that fresh.

Avoid Shem Creek Bar and Grill.

Arts is cool.

Tavern and Table / Saltwater Cowboy / Waters Edge are mostly set up to weed out the young ones. Expect to pay more.

Downtown:
Can’t beat Hanks.

I like the ceviche at Coast especially.

The Moose is one of my favs but not for seafood. Dig in for the duck. Prepare to nap. But do go to the Morrison location but don’t get towed.

“I ate at Hyman’s once about 10 years ago and I would probably get a fish sandwich at McDonald’s before I would go back.
My favorite for breakfast and lunch is Page’s Okra Grill in Mt. Pleasant.
Most of the places I frequented downtown are on East Bay Street. Top of the list is Slightly North of Broad (SNOB). Good for lunch and dinner. High Cotton is right across the street and more of a dinner venue. Both were owned by a couple of friends. They sold out a couple of years back to the Hall family but I understand the menu’s and quality are intact. Magnolia’s and Blossom are in the same area and are also very good. Best steak in town is Hall’s Chop House (also the priciest)
If I were headed down for dinner I would go to the Boathouse at Breech Inlet. Outstanding seafood, great place for an adult beverage and watch the sun set over the marsh from the rooftop bar.”

The Wreck (of Richard and Charlene) is an outstanding, no frills, fresh-off-the-boat seafood place. Highly recommended, although it can be a bit warm inside (no A/C last time we went). Definitely off the beaten path and a little hard to find. But well worth the effort!

Hyman's is all fried seafood for the most part. Once you fry it, it tastes like whatever batter you use. I like a variety where I can get steamed, broiled, and true recipes using local seafood.

Hank's is really good.

I haven't been to Bowens Island in a while, but they were the best place for oysters that were steamed and then you shucked them. That was their signature item, an the room where they prepared them was off the main dinning room. Also ,if you were of age you usually had a couple of long neck beers to down those delicious but slimy treats.

RB’s on Shem creek, hymans(for the whole flounder), and hanks(for the cream based she crab soup- that’s dessert for a Charlestonian even though it’s a month or two too early for fresh she crab). I do wish my mama and my aunt were still alive- untouchable, authentic shrimp and grits and shark steak and crab cakes- and that’s just breakfast. Anyway- I got nostalgic- have a great trip. My father owns and operates Gullah Tours of Charleston- hands down must do tour. He has good recommendations as well.

For fried seafood The Wreck or Seewee Restaurant. For an Italian take try Coda Del Pesce (front beach Isle of Palms run by former Woodlands Chef). Leon’s Oyster Shop downtown is great, eclectic place. Nico’s in Mount Pleasant for raw bar.

Will second recommendations for Hank’s and Bowen Island but would hit any of the above first.

Apr 6, 2021, 10:45 AM

To it’s over popularity at this point-which will affect service, lined and possibly food quality. Because I’m native not impressed by too much when it comes to lowcountry seafood staples. You have to go for the one or two things on a menu you like- not goi g to get everything everywhere. Hymans is good fo their whole flounder- IMHO- everything else is so-so. Hard to find whole fried flounder like that. Hymans is a go to downtown spot for tourists and locals and natives get tired of that- but unless you are catching, I going to the seafood market when it is just coming in- both I grew up doing- it is all subpar!! That’s the real from a crabbing , shrimping, fishing, lived on a creek as a boy- local!!!! My dad is friend with the owners- good local folks- so not applebees.

it also has a gift shop attached to it. They attack it for being a "tourist trap" and seem bothered that it's so popular. It's been there since 1890 and continues to get good reviews. The fact that it has survived in the super saturated restaurant market in Charleston says something.

Is it the finest meal in Charleston? No, of course not. If you want really really good seafood, there are better places like Hank's, High Cotton, Anson, etc. But if you want a casual meal, that is still quite good, at a Charleston institution, then you will enjoy Hyman's. It's a great place for someone who wants a relatively affordable meal in downtown Charleston, especially if they have kids with them.

I know i might sound arrogant- but as a low country family came there in 1700’s southerner it comes with the heritage. But...It is all subpar, and cooked and messed over by some chef. Shrimp and grits that isn’t brown is a sin.- with them desecrating it by putting cheese and cream in it!!!! Not authentic at all!!! And
The portions are terrible- 10 shrimp for $12-$16. Two crab cakes for $20 plus. Give me a break!!!! I always leave these places hungry. Unless you grew up like I did- on the creek and river pulling it out fresh or waiting at seafood market for the boat to come in and then having my grandmama, mama and aunts cooking it- it’s all borderline “theme park/tourist food.” With a “taste of Charleston”

Re: Wild, swamp running native son to all......

As someone with a similar family pedigree I couldn’t disagree more. I grew on the water myself and no, most restaurants aren’t going to beat my family oyster roasts, fish frys, or crab boils. But a visitor to Charleston doesn’t have that luxury. Charleston has evolved to be one of the finest dining cities in the entire world - that isn’t hyperbole. There are certainly tourist traps like you describe but even those generally put out competently prepared food at a price the market will sustain or those restaurants would cease to exist given the intense competition of the Charleston restaurant scene. Some people, even locals, genuinely love California Dreaming. Not where I’d choose to spend my dollars but it certainly isn’t bad. There are also restaurants doing amazing things that are simply impractical in the average home kitchen and with ingredients difficult to acquire for the home cook.

I agree with you actually and don’t think my post disagrees with your points.

Apr 6, 2021, 12:12 PM

I am not saying that Charleston is without high quality, innovative and quality dining. I was just saying that the experience is going to be “extra” to the regular hometown experience- as expected. I was just playing around with all of the posts but for visitors, they will get great food all over the holy city. I just question how much of that will be completely authentic and arguing about restaurants and downing hymans is asking too much to ask of a city whose number 1 industry is tourism. My father owns a tour company and is a local historian. This is par for the course. And many places have gotten really expensive but that’s good news for the city and people in the hospitality industry.

What you say is correct, but also as someone from the lowcountry seafood is different. Seafood is best when kept very simple. Whether it’s baked, broiled, or my favorite, fried, if you want the best seafood keep it stupid simple! Shrimp and grits, she crab soup, and a few other things are a bit more complicated, but fried shrimp or flounder is as good as it gets! And incredibly easy and simple. And what you do at home, or better yet on a Coleman stove on the banks of the creek, is as good or better than any fried seafood in any restaurant!

to be brown, and can't contain cheese or cream. Cheese and cream can make anything better! And in my opinion, yellow grits beat white every time!! I have made some damm good shrimp & grits, with a red sauce!

I gave my dad a book for his birthday one year that was a shrimp and grits cookbook and the entire book was nothing but shrimp and grits recipes. There are an infinite number of ways to cook shrimp and grits. I’ve tried more than 2 dozen versions and haven’t been disappointed yet! It’s pretty hard to screw up grits and it’s pretty hard to screw up shrimp and as long as you don’t do that you got some good eatin’ on your hands!

Charleston Crab House because every Citadel home game first down, the PA announcer says, "AND THAT'S ANOTHER CHARLESTON CRAB HOUSE FIRST DOOOOWWWWN!!!!!"

They have good crab legs there and hush puppies too but take your wallet with you.

If you are going upscale, Hank's is always a great choice.

Apr 6, 2021, 11:30 AM

So are these:

High Cotton
Slightly North of Broad
Amen Street

Some good mid-tier options are:

Fleet Landing (great views!)
Coast
Hyman's

Don't do Bowen's Island. It's overrated.

Apr 10, 2021, 6:35 AM [ in reply to If you are going upscale, Hank's is always a great choice. ]

Bowen’s Island is NOT overrated! And unlike most places around town, they actually give you quite a bit of food for the money. And Shem creek and some other places have a great view, but you can’t beat the view at Bowens Islands.

A fun little trip and an enjoyable afternoon can be had driving down to Edisto beach and there are some excellent little restaurants there. And the best fried seafood you’ll ever get is a food truck run by the Flowers family right before you get to the beach. The Flowers have lived on Edisto Island for generations and used to own all of the oyster rights around Edisto and ran 2 shrimp boats and a seafood house out of Big Bay Creek right next to the marina on Edisto beach.

The truth is the best seafood Charleston ever had no longer exists. One place was called the Atlantic House that was actually two houses combined on the front beach at Folly Beach. But the ocean took those houses years ago. Another great seafood restaurant was called The Trawler. It was on Shem Creek before Shem creek was popular. This is back when Shem Creek was really nothing more than docks for shrimp boats. It was right next to Red’s Ice House, which actually was an ice house for shrimp boats that would pull up to their dock and load up with hundreds of pounds of ice before heading out. And there used to be a little place on the creek right before you got to Folly Beach that had incredibly cheap but incredibly good seafood called The Anchor Line. But those places are all long gone and were around before Charleston was what it is today.

If you really want to get some good seafood cheap and do something really funky, take Highway 17 South and as you are leaving Charleston on the right hand side is an old abandoned gas station but the parking lot is always full. It’s called Fishnet Seafood. They started out as a seafood store selling seafood wholesale and retail and later started cooking Seafood to go. They still do both and you can get a fried soft shell crab for $7, a huge flounder filet for around $7, or an entire pound of fried shrimp for only $14. They have an extensive little menu including clam strips and the best deviled crab I’ve ever had, which they get out of Georgetown. They raise their own softshell crabs. I once ran into Tommy West there with his family when he was the head coach at Memphis. They were spending the week at Edisto beach on vacation. This is the kind of little hole in the wall that only locals know about, but it is fantastic!

But the best seafood that has ever been in a restaurant anywhere was just outside of Charleston on Highway 17 at the Edisto River in Jacksonboro. It was called the Edisto Motel Grill. It was an old fashion little motor court with a diner like existed everywhere across America before the interstate system and chain hotels. We used to go eat there when it was a diner when I was a kid. But then the family got older and they turned it into a seafood restaurant that was only open from about mid spring till about mid fall and like many traditional BBQ joints it was only open on Friday & Saturday nights. The people finally got too old to run it and no one in the family wanted to take it over so they closed in the late 90s. Because it was a small place but incredibly popular, especially during the summer, the line was almost always out the door and around the building but no one ever complained. Part of the charm was the wait because it had a sand parking lot and a huge old oak tree that covered the building and part of the parking lot and people would have an ice chest full of beer in the back of their truck or the trunk of their car and stand in line for an hour or more drinking beer and casually talking to total strangers. Not only was it the best seafood ever, but it was a very cool and unique experience! People would drive for hours in the summer to eat there. And people from out of town and out of state that would rent a beach house at Edisto knew that it was legendary! I miss that place more than any restaurant I’ve ever been to in my 55 years on earth! It really was as good as it gets! They had fried or broiled oysters, flounder, shrimp, along with A few other things, and of course coleslaw, hush puppies, and french fries with every meal. They had hamburgers and french fries and maybe one or two other things for kids. But that was it. It was a straightforward seafood menu cooked old-fashioned lowcountry style.

Oh, almost forgot, there’s a great little place in downtown Charleston near the college of Charleston call Dave’s Carry Out. They are usually open for lunch and then again for dinner but not every day. It’s family-owned and been around for years. Fantastic fried seafood! And they only accept cash, but you get a lot of food and it’s very reasonably priced. Cheap compared to everything else downtown. It’s a favorite of college students and locals downtown. Definitely nothing touristy about this place!

The Wreck is getting a bunch of mentions but should probably

Apr 6, 2021, 11:41 AM

come with some caveats. It is my go to choice for fried seafood but haven’t been since before the pandemic. It is definitely up and running. The Wreck is exactly that. It was an old ice locker for the shrimp boats on Shem Creek. During Hugo a shrimp boat - The Richard and Charlene - crashed into the the building. It was then converted into the restaurant. It’s prices are in line with other seafood restaurants on the creek but some people get sticker shock due to the rustic atmosphere and paper plates the food is served on. While I’ve never had problems I’ve also heard the service can be quite surly if you’re uninitiated (think being slow to order in the Beacon line). I have been eating there since the first week they were open and still say it and Seewee make the best fried seafood in Charleston. But you gotta travel halfway to McClellanville to eat at Seewee.

It’s not halfway to McClellanville. In fact, thanks to how much Mount Pleasant has grown, it’s now only about 3 miles from the Mount Pleasant town limits. My best friend lives in Carolina Park at the last entrance across Highway 17 from what was the Rusty Rudder and from there the restaurant is only about 3 miles.

Speaking of the Rusty Rudder, Doug Jones used to perform there about once a month before we got the China virus and then they closed.

Re: Haven't seen Leon's mentioned (King Street)

Anyone can boil shrimp, but Leon’s has a very unique batter that is fantastic on their fried chicken and fried shrimp. I love sitting outdoors there. It’s a very cool and funky little place.

Actually another very good seafood place that no one has mentioned, and they have excellent lobster rolls, is that little place on E. Bay St. right across from the Harris Teeter grocery store. I mean it’s a tiny little place, but it’s very good! I know the name of it but I just cannot think of it at the moment. The menu changes almost daily and it’s written in chalk and some of the seafood is on ice like a seafood counter at a grocery store when you walk in and they literally prepare the food right there at the counter while you’re standing there or sitting. All of the food is very fresh and very very good!

Bowen‘s island has a great seafood platter. And you really get a ton of food and it costs less than at restaurants downtown.

Bowen‘s island was really fun back in the 80s and early 90s before the original building burned down. Back then it was the old original building that was a restaurant and general store from back in the day. You would go in the back of the little cinderblock building and sit at these old rickety tables to shuck your own all you could eat buckets of oysters for about $13. That was all they had, Steamed oysters. Me and my buddies would go there and eat oysters for over an hour and drink long neck Budweiser.

Raw 167, Ordinary, Pearlz, rappahanock oyster bar, Leon’s oyster shop, Hank’s.

Just depends on what you mean when you say seafood. You want 20 friend shrimp for 12$ or tuna tar tar?

Hymans is just blander, large portions of whatever you order cooked in similar grease. It’s good fried seafood, but nothing you couldn’t get in Spartanburg or somewhere far removed from the ocean.

Locals don’t hate it, just any native from here can catch it fresher and cook it better at home

Old Main Street North Charleston, Montague Avenue off Park Circle, is a perfect example of how Charleston has become such an amazing food scene. That area used to be just totally the hood, and now it is a great little restaurant district! Madra Rue is my favorite Irish pub in Charleston.

I would suggest Husk - a bit more high scale but excellent food. Used to be hard to get a reservation there. I've not eaten there since owner Sean Brock walked away. That guy is a chef genius - I know he's won multiple James Beard awards. The food is extremely fresh. The menu changes daily based on what is locally available. I think he was featured on a Netflix series too. Great southern food. Bit pricey but sometimes to get the best, you have to pay a little more.
